Colorado Common Core Standards:
I. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative
products and processes using technology. Students:
A. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, decisions, processes,
products or solutions.
B. create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
V. Digital Citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and
practice legal and ethical behavior.
A. advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and
technology.
Objective:
After completing the lesson, the student will be able to recognize and identify
cyberbullying when presented with a plausible scenario and provide an appropriate
strategy for responding to cyberbullying through the creation of an iMovie.
Rationale: With the increase of the use of technology, students are more likely to
encounter cyberbullying online. Students will receive instruction on the recognition and
response to cyberbullying in order to create a safe learning environment.

Designing Supportive Learning Environments

Materials:
-Cyberbullying video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkG00Czb4ho
-Smartboard to display video
-Wordle.com
-iPads
-iMovie App
-Nearpod App

Setting:
Group of 6-8 sixth grade students (functioning levels range between 3rd and 5th
grade).
Each student will have an iPad with lesson-specific apps loaded.
Students will meet in the resource classroom.
Students will be divided in two tables of equal groups.
Student Needs:
Students receiving instruction have Resource time on their IEPs. Specific student
accommodations include seating away from distractions, small group work, and use of
technology to submit written assignments. The students will be taught in a small group,
seated at separate tables from their personal distractors (specific peers). We will be using
the iPad for all of our lesson work so that will fulfill the requirement of the use of
technology for written assignments. The pre-assessment and post-assessment were
written to address the accommodations of students requiring multiple choice or a word
bank on assessments and assignments.

Instructional Strategies:
Introduction/Focus: Students will open their Nearpod apps. They will join the lesson with
the code that I provide them. They will see a title screen and then on the next slide they
will write all of the words that they associate with cyberbullying. I will use the
responses I receive to create a Wordle that will be displayed on the Smartboard. (5
minutes)
Instructional Procedure:
1. Students will see slide 3 on their iPads in the Nearpod presentation. This
slide will be a series of multiple choice questions that will serve as their
pre-assessment. (10 minutes)
2. The Nearpod presentation will then work through a definition of and
examples of cyberbullying. At the end of each scenario the question will
be posed to the students, is this considered cyberbullying? This will be the
formative assessment in the form of a poll. Students will respond through
the Nearpod app. (25 minutes)
3. We will watch the cyberbullying video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkG00Czb4ho) as a class. (3
minutes)
4. Students will take a post-assessment through the Nearpod app where they
will identify videos as cyberbullying or not and select appropriate
responses of ways to respond to cyberbullying. (10 minutes)
Closure: For the closure activity, students will divide into 2 groups where they will create
a short iMovie demonstrating an example of cyberbullying and an appropriate way to
respond to that aggression. iMovies will be viewed as a large group on the Smartboard.
(25 mintues)

comment or photo. True or False

We often think of bullying as a physical attack on someone. Cyberbullying is a good
example of emotional attacks upon another person. Writing mean messages on someone's
Facebook page is an example of cyberbullying. It is not okay to pretend to be someone
else or refuse to tell someone who you are on the internet. You should only post photos of
other people online with their permission. Always logout when you are done with your
computer and never post any personal information online. You should change your
password regularly. If you are being cyberbullied, it is important to keep evidence by
taking screenshots of the attacks. The best way to respond to cyberbullying is to tell a
trusted adult. If the harassment does not stop you and your parents need to contact the
police. If you witness cyberbullying, report it and offer support to the person being
bullied.
