Lesson Plan

Game 5 pairs of direction game activity in a paper bag.

Lesson Structure

4 Grade 2s will be at Choir until 2, so theres no point starting

their lesson without them

Introduction 20-30mins
1:30-2
Warm up (10minutes) - Refresh
what directions are and ask a
student to come up the front and
follow your directions. Ask the
student to take 10 steps forward,
turn left, right to face the door.
Guide students to a certain place
in the room. Now its my turn, tell
students that if I am standing
here and I want to get to the
opposite, how would you direct
me? Do exactly what they say to
do literal. Have to be clear with
instructions.
Explicit (10 minutes) Ask Grade
2s to pair up with a partner and
find somewhere in the room. One
person picks out an instruction
and tells the partner to do that
instruction. Do 3 activities then
swap. Continue swapping until I
ask them to sit on the floor.
Grade 1s stay with me refresh on
left and right. Give each student a
band to place on their LEFT hand
so it is easier to do this activity.
WALT - Understand that Left and
Right changes depending on
where you are. So its YOUR left
and right. Get up and model
turning left and then say now
where is my left? To the Back of
the room. Why do you think that

Independent 20mins 22:20

Grade 1s swap with
Grade 2s and do the
instructional activity in
pairs using wrist bands
as help. Pair multilevelled.
Grade 2s on the floor.
WALT Understand what
quarter turns are.
Get one student up and
tell them to face
standing the right. Tell
them that they just did a
quarter turn. Turn to front
again. Now turn to the
left you did another
quarter turn.
Get another student up
and tell them to face the
back of the room. Ask
them to turn to the right
quarter turn, left
quarter turn (this also
emphasises direction
moves with you).
Draw what we just did on
the board with the 4
sides of classroom,
facing this way. Then we
turned to face this way
(draw arrow) and thats a
quarter turn. Okay, what

depending on
where you are.
Quarter turn is a
4th of a full turn.

Is that still a
quarter turn?
(show on board) if
we moved this way
(arrow) is there
any difference?
Hopefully by this
stage they are
starting to click so
just need other
ways to show,
practice and
demonstrate.
Get my seahorse
and get them to
model what they
were doing to the
seahorse. Turn left,

Differentiated Learning:
Supported Learners
All students should be able to work independently during the game without
interrupting the teacher. Students will be paired with mixed abilities so pair work will
be at a maximum.
Extension
Students make up their own version of the game jump, move back 3 spaces,
circular turns. Add their own direction in there. Try and get their partner to the other
side of the classroom (horizontal not vertical). Add 2 or 3 directions together one
after the other. Swap partners.
