Gustavo Garza
University of Texas Brownsville
EDTC6325_Spring 2014

Course Description:
This training will give the attendees the ability to extend their computer knowledge of basic
concepts and part identification. the ability to understand how a computer works will give the
learner the ability to extend a computers life. The learner will be introduce to the dangers their
systems can be at if they do not keep a good preventive maintenance (PM) and the techniques
they need to perform to avoid issue with overheating. The learner will learn what internal parts
make their computers work and what an Operating System (OS) helps a computer perform which
grants the user access to all their services they have become accustom of using in their
computing usage. This training will introduce the dangers of having a computer and the issues
one might have when sharing information be it by internet, email or USB drives. The learner will
also gain information of how to identify hardware they have in their present computers and how
to upgrade their hardware if needed in order to extend the computers life.
Instructional Goal:
The learner that completes this training will be able to understand what can keep their computers
working for many years to come by performing PM. The learner will have the skill to keep their
computer running error free and at its optimal speed by knowing what the OS does and how to
keep that OS running error free by keeping the OS lean and clean. The learner will learn the
potential dangers of sharing data via a USB drive and downloading data from the internet. The
final bit of information that a learner which goes through the training will be receiving is the
benefits of upgrading the hardware of a computer.
Course objectives:
Sub Goal 1: The student will learn the general instruction of how to do PM on a desktop
computer.

Students will learn the pros and cons on the most stationary place people set up a computer
up for their daily operation.
Students will learn what makes up a computer. Identifying the components inside a computer
that can be damaged if not maintained
Student will learn what tools are required to keep a PC free of any thermal blankets.
Students will learn how to properly keep the inside and outside of a computer clean and free
from any obstructions

Sub Goal 2: The student will learn how to maintain /optimize a computers operating system.
(We will be working with windows 7 on a IBM clone PC.)

Students will learn what the operating system does for a computer
Student will learn how to remove services that start at startup to avoid a slow booting
computer and clear Browsing History in Internet Explorer.
Students will learn how to clean house in their operating system by removing temporary
files, folder, pictures and old programs.
Students will learn how to use Microsoft tools such as disk clean up and disk defragmenter
to allow for the OS to work at its optimal speed.

Sub Goal 3: The student will learn what potential danger comes with sharing information via the
internet and by file transferring via USB
Students will learn the terminology of what is adware, spyware, virus, worms and root kits.
Students will learn the basic procedures one can take to avoid becoming infected with a
computer virus, phishing scheme and how to keep their PCs running clean of these items
Students will learn what some of the pesky messages mean when surfing the internet and
looking into what a virus infected USB drive can have if connected to their PC.
Students will learn the importance of keeping an updates OS and keeping their antivirus and
antispyware up to date with the their definitions.
Sub Goal 4: The student will learn of the advantages in upgrading the hardware inside their
computers (e.g. Hard drives, Optical drives, Power supplies, RAM, etc...)
Students will learn the different components that make up a computer. They will learn of the
different computer parts that makes a computer operate the way the end users are accustom
of.
The students will learn what each component inside a computer helps a PC do and the
importance of it.
The student will learn the benefits of updating the internal components can aid when using a
computer in their everyday usage.
Required Text(s):
All required material, readings, and texts will be included in this E-Learning training
course. If an attendee feels they need a book the A+ Guide to Managing & Maintaining Your
PC, 8th Edition ISBN-13: 9781133135081 can be used to complement material covered.
Assignments:
Task work for this course include: term quizzes, discussion questions, and final project
assignments for each lesson. Each quiz is going to consist of multiple choice questions and
matching. Discussion questions are going to be related on the lesson topic. A project assignment
over each lesson is the final part for the course.
