@IPPF_WHR

@PPact

@PPglobe

ere thrilled to welcome you to Phoenix for

our 10th Netroots Nation! Ten years is quite a
milestone. At that first conference in Las Vegas,
many of us were just getting to know each other. Since then
weve become family; weve grown professionally; weve
built power and weve had some victories as a movement.
As an organization, we started out this year by asking
ourselves: How can we advance progressive change in the
communities we touch? Weve kept that question in mind
as weve planned the conference over the past 12 months,
making a conscious effort to amplify and support the efforts
of the amazing activists weve met around the state.
Over the past month, weve been sharing some of their stories
through our #AZDispatch campaign. The activists and
organizations highlighted are some of the bravest Ive met;
they step out of the shadows daily against unjust policies
and fight for their families, their communities and, at times,
their own lives.
Weve worked closely with local organizers to make this years
conference different and even more impactful: providing
scholarships for 250 (mostly local) attendees; organizing a
conference-wide direct action and smaller actions leading
up to the conference; and dedicating a substantial part of
our program to immigration, racial profiling, police
brutality and other issues that threaten our communities.
There are many great things happening in Arizona, too.
A collection of civic engagement groups have hit their
stride organizing people in the wake of SB1070. With a
little more investment and some hard work, its not crazy
to think that Arizona could be a competitive state in a few
more cycles. We hope youll seek out these stories, as well as
do what you can to support organizers working in Arizona.

Theres a lot to choose from in our agenda this year, but here
are a few highlights:
Were doing extensive coverage on topics like immigration, our out-of-control police forces and the issues around
gender equality.
Weve launched a new track of programming with our
music track, bringing some renown artists to Phoenix to talk
about how they meld activism with musical performance.
Were also hosting discussions that can only happen in a
setting like Netroots Nation. Im personally most excited
about discussions about solidarity across movements and
identities, and sessions that challenge us as progressives to
live out our values every day.
The speakers youll hear this weekend make up our most
diverse group ever: 62% are people of color, a 9% increase
from last year. The percentage of Latino/Latina panelists
and moderators went up 14% from last year. Plus, 63 percent
of our speakers/moderators are women. We feel its just as
important to consider which voices are elevated as whats
being said.
Whether this is your first Netroots Nation or your 10th,
I think youll love the agenda weve put together. There are
a lot of choices but there arent any bad ones.
Keep a cold drink in your hand, and remember: its a dry heat.

Raven Brooks (@ravenb)

in debt.
By 2030, undergraduate education at a private university could cost
as much as $130,428 a year. Sending your child to a public university
could set you back at least $41,228 annually, or $164,912 over 4 years.*
Everyone deserves a fair shot at higher education. But student debt has
become a barrier to achieving the American Dream.

LOCAL RESOURCES

Local picks

Want to see some of Phoenix during one of the afternoon breaks?

Or maybe you have a little free time after the convention winds down?
Here are a few suggestions from local Dan Shilling :
CENTRAL AVENUE MUSEUM ADVENTURE Two of the nations finest museums

are within walking distance of one another, and a short light-rail ride from the
convention center. Get off at McDowell Road for the PHOENIX ART MUSEUM
(1625 N. Central Ave.), a magnificent institution known for its modern and Asian
art collections. A brief 10-minute walk north (or take light-rail to Encanto) sits
the fabulous HEARD MUSEUM (2301 N. Central Ave.), which houses one of the
worlds largest collections of Native American art and culture.

EARLY PHOENIX HISTORY Learn more about the original inhabitants of the

Valley of the Sun. PUEBLO GRANDE MUSEUM (4619 E. Washington; light-rail stop:
44th Street) is built around an ancient Hohokam mound. Perhaps a thousand years
ago the Hohokam constructed the giant canal system that made 19th-century
Phoenix possible. A short walk from the convention center sits the ARIZONA
LATINO ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER (147 E. Adams), which celebrates and promotes
Hispanic history and culture.

ARTS DISTRICTS Phoenix is home to many contemporary arts and cultural

districts. ROOSEVELT ROW, a half-mile north of the convention center, is nationally

known for its arts and cultural events, award-winning restaurants, galleries, boutiques
and live music. Just west of the convention center on Jackson, youll find the
ICEHOUSE and other warehouse galleries, performance spaces and restaurants.

HERITAGE SQUARE Only a block from the convention center, Heritage Square is

home to the ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER (1600 E. Washington), one of the countrys
truly magnificent science museums. Heritage Square also includes the ROSSON
HOUSE MUSEUM, one of Phoenixs earliest homes, and several fine restaurants,
including PIZZERIA BIANCO, which the New York Times once rated the best pizza
joint in the nation.

Getting around

As you travel around the Phoenix

area, there are a number of ways to
get around:
LIGHT RAIL The citys METRO

Light Rail runs from central Phoenix,

through downtown, to Tempe and
Mesa. During the week, trains run
about every 12 minutes from 5 a.m.
to 11 p.m. On weekends, it runs about
every 15 minutes from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m.

LYFT First-time users receive a $20

discount on their first ride through
Lyft. Just download the app on your
mobile device and use the promo code
NN15 to get the credit.
TAXI You can also take a ride from

one of these taxi companies: Yellow

Cab (480-888-8888) or Discount Cab
(602-200-2000).

HIKERS NIRVANA The Valley of the Sun has a fantastic park system, beginning

with SOUTH MOUNTAIN PARK, the largest city park in the world. Seven miles south
of downtown, the park features 70 miles of trails, mountain biking, horseback riding
and an interpretive center. Cars can also drive to the top for a great view of the Valley.
CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN, about 10 miles northeast of downtown, is a favorite among
hikers who want a challenging trek. (Dont forget to bring water and sunscreen.)

Netroots Nation Safe Space Policy

Netroots Nation is committed to creating a safe, inclusive

space for all our attendeesregardless of sexual orientation,
gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion, age, physical
limitations, immigration status or economic status. We strive
to create a community grounded in solidarity, equality and
respect.
It is our collective responsibility to ensure that each member
of that community feels welcomed and respected. Harassment,
discrimination, violence and bigotry create feelings of fear,
uneasiness, humiliation and discomfort. Even if our actions
are not intentionally hurtful, what we say and do can hurt
others or make them feel uncomfortable.
Sexual harassment is a form of sexual violence. Sexual
harassment is any unwanted attention of a sexual nature.
Examples may include remarks about another persons
appearance or dress, unwanted flirtations, touching someone without their permission, unwanted sexual pressure
and verbal abuse and name calling.

We want our attendees to have a great time, but please

remember that sexual consent is always essential. And if
you use alcohol, please do so safely. Alcohol use is never an
excuse to disrespect, harass or harm others, and someone
who is intoxicated may not be able to give their consent.
If you need to report an incident, please call the Phoenix
Police Department at 602-262-6151. You can also call RAINNs
National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673).
SurvJustice.org also provides legal guidance to survivors of
sexual violence. If you feel harassed or threatened, you may
also contact the Netroots Nation staff at 704-900-1846.
Netroots Nation reserves the right to revoke, without refund,
the credential of any attendee not in compliance with this
safe space policy.

T H U R S D AY, 6 P. M . , N O R T H H A L L E

F R I D AY, 3 : 1 5 P. M . , N O R T H H A L L E

Well kick off the opening keynote for our 10th annual conference
with stories of courage from some of the leading activists in Arizona.
Well uncover some of the most unjust practices in our immigration
system and elevate the voices of local activists fighting for their families
and communities. Many of the issues they faceracial profiling, police
brutality and morehave deep roots in communities of color across
our country. Youll hear from top organizers in those communities as well,
in addition to Rep. Donna Edwards and many more.

Immigration activists successfully pushed President Obama to expand

DACA and DAPA, but those programs are now on hold in the federal
courts while activists continue to work to stop deportations, put an end
to out-of-control ICE enforcement and push for more just policies. The
LGBT community has made strides in ensuring that gay couples across
the country can marry, but there are still many issues to be tackled: full
equality for transgender people, workplace discrimination and adoption
and custody issues, to name just a few. And although weve seen the
minimum wage in cities across the country increase, workers continue
to push for more progressive work policies. How do we continue to make
progress on issues like immigration? How do we move closer to full equality
and economic opportunity for everyone?

F R I D AY, 1 0 : 3 0 A . M . , N O R T H H A L L E

Morning Keynote with Sen. Elizabeth Warren

During this keynote youll hear from one of our biggest progressive
championsSenator Elizabeth Warren. She fired up the crowd last
year in Detroit, pledging to continue fighting a rigged system in a
country of rising income inequality and stressing the importance of
fighting for progressive values. Sen. Warren also joined us in 2010
and in 2012, as a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat she now holds.
For the past year, shes continued to boldly speak out about solutions
to poverty and student debt and the need for everyone to play by the
same rules.

Rally for Arpaio Free AZ!

Directly after the morning keynote, well march to the 4th Avenue Jail
for an #ArpaioFreeAZ rally. Sheriff Joe Arpaio was granted one of
the first and most extensive police-ICE collaboration contracts in the
country in 2007, which paved the way for SB1070 and similar policies
and laws across the country. Even though Arpaio is facing civil and criminal contempt charges in court, ICE agents are still stationed at the
4th Avenue Jail. The federal government continues to deport Arpaios
victims even as a lawsuit initiated against Arpaio by the Department
of Justice will be heard in court on August 10. Its time for Arpaio to
resign and take his legacy with him.

One of the best parts about Netroots Nation is hearing the unique
experiences and personal stories of fellow organizers, activists, and
thought leaders in the movement. Thats why were once again closing
out the conference this year with Ignite, a full plenary session focusing
on those stories. The keynote will feature short presentations that are
thought-provoking, inspiring, engagingand sometimes very funny.
Using the Ignite format, each speaker will be given 5 minutes to talk,
while 20 slides that advance every 15 seconds are shown on the screen.
Over the course of the program youll hear from Lori Adelman,
Jenifer Fernandez Ancona, Dagoberto Bailn, Beth Becker, Heather

Waiting for your 501(c)(3) status?

Have you thought about a fiscal sponsorship, which would allow you to get your non-profit
moving while you wait for the IRS to catch up with your momentum? Fiscal sponsorships
are legal arrangements that allow associations or corporations which have yet to receive
their 501(c)(3) tax determination from the IRS to indirectly receive donations from foundations and others who wish to donate to 501(c)(3) organizations.

Netroots Foundation offers fiscal sponsorships to worthy projects that align with our
mission. For more information, visit netrootsfoundation.org and look under programs

Opening Keynote

PANELS

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS

#AskaSista: Black Women Muse on Politics and Pop Culture

Ella Bakers practice of participatory democracy has shaped grassroots
organizing models from SNCC to #Occupy to #BlackLivesMatter.
The Fannie Lou Dems are organizing in #Ferguson, Loretta Lynch
has replaced Eric Holder as Attorney General and Marilyn Mosby is
handling her business as a prosecutor in Baltimore. Black women are
still the largest, democratic voting bloc, and America cannot afford to
overlook or underutilize our brilliance and power. Many of us stood for
Wendy Davis, but she lost because white women did not support her in
the same numbers as Black and Latina women in Texas. Hillary Clinton
wants to engage Black women voters, but she and other Democrats
remained too silent on police brutality, Marissa Alexander and more.
After an entire year, we are just now able to #BringBackOurGirls as
terrorism continues to sweep the globe. And can we talk about Ebola
and truly affordable healthcare? Selma? The Oscars? Now in its fifth
year and a Netroots Nation tradition, youd better #AskaSista.
#EpicFail: A Look at GOTV Failures (So You Dont Repeat Them)
We love to talk about our GOTV successes: registering 10,000 voters on
a shoestring budget, creating a great video that went viral, developing
a tech innovation that changed the game. If thats what youre looking
for, this is not the panel for you. Some of the most successful groups in
the voter registration/GOTV space will share their most abject failures.
Think of the $80,000 experiment that registered a whopping 6 voters
or the $250,000 website that received almost no traffic. Join us for a
good-natured laugh as you learn from our mistakesand ensure you
dont repeat them in 2016.
2020 War Room: Update from the Fight to End GOP
Gerrymandering (sponsored panel)
Right-wing gerrymandering was bad in 2010, but John Roberts Supreme
Court may have made it a whole lot worse in 2020unless Democrats
organize NOW to take back the redistricting pens before the 2020
Census. Please join a panel of Democratic legislative leaders, campaign
strategists, and top officials of the newest progressive weapon in the
redistricting fightthe Advantage 2020 super PACas we update the
Netroots community on this cycles crucial redistricting targets, the
changes brought about by brand-new Supreme Court decisions, and
Democrats long-term strategy to flip the legislative chambers that
could shatter the Tea Partys hold on Congress. This panel is sponsored by
the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.
A New 50 State Strategy: Reversing the Democratic
Collapse in the States
The 2014 election was catastrophic for the progressive movement and
the Democratic Party. Republicans gained a record number of seats
in state legislatures and seized the governorships of several more blue
states. Since President Obama took office, Democrats have lost nearly
1,000 state legislative seats. There are only seven states where Democrats
control the governors office and both houses of the legislature. Until
we reverse this slide, Democrats will have a nearly impossible time retaking
Congress and governing. Of course, GOP control of states is causing
serious damage in and of itself, as they impose extremist policies and
undermine progressive victories. This panel will analyze the reasons for
this disasterand chart a course back to power.
A Progressive U.S. Foreign Policy Begins in Iran
(sponsored panel)
Negotiators from six world powers negotiated a strong deal with Iran
to limit its nuclear program. In the months leading up to the final
agreement, hawks in Congress went into overdrive to sabotage the
Obama administrations tough and principled diplomacyeven though
our nation faced a stark choice: hard-nosed diplomacy and a chance
at a peaceful settlement or another Middle East war. The deal with
Iran is a major foreign policy victory. Its overwhelmingly popular with
the American people. And yet it continues to face an uphill battle in
Congress. What lessons can we learn from Iran diplomacy-related organizing? Whos leading the charge in Congress for a progressive foreign

44 H #NN15

policy? Why should grassroots and netroots groups outside of the peace
and security community care about U.S. foreign policy? Whats the
economic, social, and human cost of rampant militarism? What impact
does it have on our collective work? This panel is sponsored by MoveOn.org.
A Streetcar Named Deception (sponsored panel)
Streetcars are enjoying a renaissance as a funky, classic mode of transportation through historic and commercial areas of cities. From Tucson
to Milwaukee, cities are building or proposing streetcars to attract
high-end developers, condo-dwellers and shoppers to trendy areas.
However, these boutique streetcars arent what they seem. They
have no real use for people who actually depend on public transit to
get to work, to the doctor or to church. These streetcars actually divert
taxpayer money away from real transitbuses and light railresulting
in routes being cut and fares going up. Furthermore, new streetcars
are often operated by private companies with a history of mistreating
workers and rarely reinvest profits in the community they serve. They
reap millions of taxpayer dollars in contracts and then take their profits
elsewhere. Learn why todays streetcars are making transit options
worse. This panel is sponsored by the Amalgamated Transit Union.
America Awakens: Activism and Action Restoring Trust
Between Community and Police
This panel will highlight the activism and political response that has
happened in the wake of police killings in Ferguson, Baltimore, Cleveland
and beyond. How can we solve our countrys problems and build
political power while strengthening ties between organizers and elected
officials? This panel aims to facilitate a conversation around how to
ensure that elected officials hear and act on the demands of activists.
Arizonas Latino Civic Engagement from SB 1070 to Now
Since the passage of SB1070, groups around the stateand country
have prioritized innovative and collaborative civic engagement
campaigns with Latinos. Join us for a conversation on how grassroots
organizing, Spanish media partnerships and technology has maximized
efforts and resources around the state to build political power.
Beyond Diversity: A New Model for Solidarity Across
Causes and Identities
Allyship and diversity have become progressive buzzwords, yet
we still face an unbearable whiteness in liberal media and great racial
and gender-based schisms within our movement. This panel will focus
on modeling solidarity in the progressive movement by centering and
elevating historically marginalized voices, and learning key lessons for
the progressive movement along the way. Come learn from activists on
the digital front lines who are identifying common adversaries to the
progressive movement and banding together to face them.
Beyond Vanity Metrics: How We Can Use Digital to
Strengthen Our Campaigns
We often flaunt the number of impressions, Facebook likes and site
visits we receive, but what does that actually mean for a campaign? This
panel will address what occurs beyond vanity metricsfocusing instead
on the very real impact a digital program can have on every piece
of a campaign. From field to finance, how can your digital program
strengthen each arm of your campaign? Digital is a value-add, not just
a must do, and were going to talk about why. Panelists with experience
working in each arm of a digital program can speak to the value of
email, social media, advertising, design, data and analytics.
Black Mess on Black Mesa
What is happening on Black Mesa today compared throughout the years
to what has happened in mountain communities in Appalachia by the
coal industry? Human rights abuses at Black Mesa and in Appalachia
abound, and Big Coal and our government should be held accountable. How are human rights being violated and who do we turn to for
help? Panelists will give a synopses of the human rights violations and
frustrations theyve encountered in seeking redress. Discussions will focus

Border Vigilantes and their Bullshit: Countering the

Falsehoods that Fuel Violent Nativist Movements
This spring saw the return of the vigilante border-watch Minutemen
movement, a revival of the bad old days when far-right extremists prowled
the borderlands with weapons and threatening rhetoric. The experts on
this panel will discuss the ramifications of this movement for immigration
policy, and especially the way the ideas and rhetoric surrounding the
movement fuel misbegotten policies in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.
When you hear demands for border security before immigration reform
can occur, the legacy of the Minutemen is speaking. Well discuss how
to counter the falsehoods and myths that fuel both these violent nativist
movements and their enablers in Americas mainstream politics.
Bring Wine and Whiskey: Tactics for Engaging and
Activating Millennial Women
Many womens organizations dont connect well with younger women,
especially those who are not politically engaged. Join us to learn some
unique ways to organize ambitious, badass, millennial women and have
meaningful conversations about politics and current affairs. Empowering
millennial women is essential to getting more women into leadership
roles and into office, and that work should begin now.
Building a Pipeline of Digital Talent
2016 will bring not only a presidential contest but many other fights,
from winning back control of the Senate to policy advocacy and state
ballot initiatives. Progressives need a pipeline of strong digital talent
who can staff all levels of these campaigns, if we are to apply the lessons
of campaigns weve won in the past to campaigns we want to win in
the future. Join us as we discuss ways we can improve campaigns by
developing a diverse, progressive workforce to staff them.
Building Black-Brown Coalitions
A series of highly publicized tragic deaths involving law enforcement
have sparked national outrage and vibrant activism, as well as critical
racial justice organizing to address widespread racial discrimination
and institutional inequalities. At the same time, Latino and immigrant
communities cope with arbitrary divisions among those who will benefit
from executive action and others who are further criminalized and
remain at risk of deportation. Join us for a discussion about advancing
racial justice, civil rights, immigration reform and economic equality.
Building Progressive Political Power
The panel will focus on strategies and organizing needed to build
progressive political power at the federal, state and local level. How do
progressives win elections? How do they build progressive power once
they do win election? What is the best way to maximize inside-outside
power with elected officials and the grassroots?
Campus Sexual Assault: Fighting Violence is a Feminist Issue
One in 4 college aged women will experience sexual assault on campus.
The majority of these assaults are not reported, and when they are
the process rarely produces justice. Victims/survivors are fighting back
and activists are working to end this epidemic. This panel will feature
change makers working in media, film, education, culture, policy
and advocacyall promoting a society where people can live free
of sexual violence and comfortable with healthy, positive sexuality.

Can Big Data Keep Us Safe?

Police departments from New York to Chicago are using big data
to try to predict everything from where the next crime wave will be
to who is going to commit the crimes. On the federal level, big data is
being used to improve health outcomes, reduce waste, and more. But
can big data be used to predict terrorism? If so, what impact will increasingly invasive technologies have on communities law enforcement may
have under surveillance? On our civil liberties? Experts will discuss
developing technologies, the role of using big data in counterterrorism
and law enforcement, and their impact on local communities. Well also
talk about what advocates and bloggers can do to protect their privacy
and ensure law enforcement is not racially profiling communities.
Confronting Exploitation, Retaliation and Deportation
to Build Power for Immigrant Workers
The fear of deportation has made it easy for bad employers to exploit
and retaliate against workers who try to assert their rights. This has
played into the power divide between workers and bosses, leaving
unscrupulous employers with the most to gain. Well discuss creative
strategies to organize immigrant workers, stop immigration-based
retaliation and fight back against unjust deportations in order to shift
power from the boss to the workers.
Corporate Takeover Goes Local: Communities Fight Back
For proponents, privatization is simply a transfer of ownership of a
property or business from the government to the private sector. But
for public education, it means the replacement of high-quality staff
dedicated to students and the surrounding community, with workers
from outside the communities with little accountability or oversight.
In public education, schools and staff functions (custodial, clerical, food
service, transportation, etc.) are contracted out to low-bid, but oftentimes low-quality contractors. Well discuss the impact of privatization
in education, whos pushing for it, and how to fight against it.
Creative Disruption: Culture Jamming, Subversive Actions
and Media Tactics for a 2.0 World
How can we use creative disruption to interrupt injustice, advance our
campaigns and shift culture? Well explore the evolution of tactics in
the age of social media, where our ability to capture the imagination of
our audience determines the scale of our impact. Join us to discuss how
to incorporate culture jamming, creative actions and media stunts into
campaigns and to explore the broader concepts that make these tactics
succeed or fail. Whether holding fake press conferences, creating spoof
ads or glitterbombing presidential candidates is your thing, this panel is
sure to have something to grab your attention.
Daring to Internet While Female 2.0
Last years successful Daring to Internet While Female panel addressed
being a woman online and in public spaces. Now, were following it up
with a sequel! Weve all been bullied, harassed and silenced onlinebut
where do we go from there? How can we be more supportive of each
other in spaces that arent our own? How can we listen better, act more
strategically and ensure that people are comfortable telling their stories
publicly?
Detention, Determination and New Organizing Behind Bars
Hunger strikes and challenges to individual cases of abuse have exposed
the harsh conditions inside for-profit detention centers and galvanized
organizing in the migrant rights movement on the outside. Former
detainees and supporters will share strategies for organizing in the
hardest scenarios, facing solitary confinement and winning concessions
as part of broader efforts for rights and recognition on both sides of the
walls. The panel is an opportunity to learn about the factors leading to
the explosion of migrant detention in recent years and the movement
to reverse the trend from those who have lived through it.

Do Details Matter? Why and How We Sanitize Our Stories

Storytelling is an important, effective tool for activism. Sharing a personal
narrative is powerful and should be done both effectively and carefully.
Our panelists regularly use their lived experiences with sexual assault,
abortion rights, teen parenting, mental health, poverty, trans rights,
sex worker rights, racial injustice and gender discrimination to educate
and activate people in ways that statistics and research alone cannot. But
every one of us holds details backfor privacy, safety, self care and other
reasons. This session will discuss how and why we edit our stories, how
campaigns can utilize our narratives without exploiting them, and how
the media should cover sensitive topics without resorting to voyeurism.
Education in the 2016 Presidential Campaign
(sponsored panel)
The next President will have a huge responsibility in shaping the future
of public education in America. Common Core, access to higher
education, college affordability, civil rights and equal opportunity in
education, and the federal role in public education will play a crucial
part in the debate of both the Republican and Democratic nomination
process and the general election. This panel is sponsored by the National
Education Association.
Ending Inequality for All: How Progressives Can Win,
from Presidential Politics to the Fast Food Fight
Thanks to the advocacy of progressives, the country has turned a critical
eye toward the historic gap between the 1 percent and the rest of America.
Weve won significant income inequality victories, from ballot measures
to state legislatures but we know we still have a long way to go before
we overcome what President Obama has called the defining challenge
of our time. This panel will examine the progress weve made and the
challenges and opportunities ahead in addressing income inequality.
Examining Racial and Gender Bias: Case studies from
the Restaurant, Retail, Domestic and Tech Industries
Despite efforts to create equal employment opportunities for women
and people of color, the distribution of jobs remains unequal and
biased. Racial and gender bias can exclude workers from a job or
segregate them into particular kinds of jobs. These unfair results are
often a direct result of implicit racial and gender bias, not a natural
consequence or a necessary by-product of capitalism. Whether groups
are concentrated in low-wage jobs or excluded altogether, solutions lie
in addressing racial and gender bias with new policies and practices.
Join us for a panel discussion on racial and gender bias in restaurant,
domestic and retail industries, as well as associated harms and possible
solutions. Well also address the racial and gender bias in the tech
industry and the mistaken belief that the pipeline is solely to blame.
Fed Up: The Economy Still Isnt Working for Us and
Why You Should Care about the Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve Board is making economic policy decisions that
will affect the vast majority of Americans over the next few years, yet
far too few Americans realize the enormous stake they have in decisions
made there. The truth about the economy is obvious to most of us: Not
enough jobs, not enough hours and not enough payparticularly in
communities of color and among young workers. The central banks
decisions about when to raise interest rates and slow the recovery will
determine whether Americas families will enjoy real wage growth
for the first time in more than a decade, and whether disadvantaged
communities will share in the growth. Join us for a look at Fed Up:
The National Campaign for a Strong Economy, the first campaign in
decades to influence Fed monetary policy.

Feminist Future: How Folks of Color, Queer Activists

and Young People are Transforming the Movement
Youve probably heard about first, second and third-wave feminism.
You know that movements change and evolve over time. This panel
is about expanding whats possible in the feminist movement by highlighting young leaders and activists and creating a space to envision
the future of feminism. The millennial generation is the most diverse
generation our country has ever seen. This panel will share data on
millennial attitudes on a number of social issues that will impact 2016
and highlight voices of young activists doing the work and asserting the
future of feminism. What will be the impact of feminism and the youth
movement on the 2016 election?
Globalizing Homophobia: How Anti-LGBT Activists
are Spreading Hate Abroad
As LGBT people in the United States win important fights in courts
and legislatures, American anti-gay activists are increasingly turning
their attentions abroad, where their dangerous ideology is causing serious
even deadlyharm. This panel will examine the role of the U.S. rightwing movement in organizing and funding homophobia abroad, as well
as the role progressive activists have in holding global anti-gay activists
accountable at home.
Hashtag Activism: How the Rising American Electorate
is Moving Beyond Broadcast Campaigns
Meet with leaders from some of 2014s most powerful online campaigns
and movements: the Black Youth Project 100, which worked in solidarity
with communities in Ferguson on anti police brutality; the students who
launched a campus-based sexual assault movement centering around
survivors; United We Dream, which continues to fight for the dignity
of DREAMers and their families; and Get Equal, which is moving
LGBT equality beyond marriage. Panelists will reveal best practices
around harnessing emerging social media trends and how they are
building both digital and grassroots infrastructure to support distributed
networks across the country.
How Progressive Arizona Became Tea Party Arizona
Arizona entered the Union in 1912 as a progressive state, enshrining in
its Constitution citizen power over elected officials in at least three major
ways: initiative, referendum and recall. All have been used repeatedly
to enact public policy, recently in the historic recall of Russell Pearce.
Unions have historically been robust in the state and still are today.
Yet all statewide elected officials today are Republican, and the state
legislature is overrun with Tea Party conservatives. How did this
happen? And more importantly, what can be done to revitalize and
re-empower progressives and progressive policy?
How the Web was Won: The Battle for Net Neutrality
In March 2014, the Federal Communications Commission proposed to
let internet service providers like Verizon and Comcast create private
fast lanes on the internet, threatening to leave the majority behind in
the slow lane. This threatened freedom of speech and the future of
organizing. Facing one of the most powerful lobby groups in Washington,
a wide-ranging coalition of media and internet advocates, civil rights
organizations, grassroots organizers, academics, main street businesses
and everyday internet users fought back and won. The coalition pressured
the FCC, Obama administration and Congress to reverse course on net
neutrality through millions of public comments on the proposed rules,
traditional advocacy, events throughout the country and online actions.
This panel will highlight lessons learned from the battle for net neutrality,
which culminated in a February 2015 decision to adopt rules that will
preserve the open internet for all.

Inclusion Matters: The Whys and Hows of Expanding

Progressive Engagement of Latinos in the Media
With eyes on 2016, the Right is desperate to win over or neutralize
Latino voters at the ballot box, and they are doing everything they can
to get the media to help. As the Koch brothers channel more resources
into the Libre Initiative, conservatives are aggressively booking talkers for
Spanish media (the fastest growing media market), pressuring Telemundo, Univision and others to offer more balance and push conservative
lies about progressive policies. Meanwhile, English-speaking media often
misrepresent Latinos as single-issue voters who are only concerned about
immigration, when in reality, Latinoslike most Americansare progressive on the economy, health care, education and civil rights. Learn
from media experts and watchdogs about how progressives can hold the
Right accountable and pave the way for a more truthful engagement of
the Latino community.
Is This Thing On? How to Know If Your Online Ads are Working
For years, digital has been billed as inherently more accountable than
traditional paid media. But how do you know whether clicks and
impressions are actually translating into dollars and votes? Well explore
the many methodologies you can use to determine whether your online
ad dollars are being well spentand how you can use that data to get
organizational buy-in (and bigger budgets).
Just in Time! Worker Organizing & the Fight for Fair Scheduling
We deserve a fair work week. Millions of families live with economic
uncertainty because their wage earners have unpredictable schedules and
inadequate hours. However, a burgeoning national movement of hourly
workers is fighting back against unfair just-in-time scheduling practices
and winning. Join this discussion of groundbreaking yet commonsense
employment policies that promote control over our personal lives and
economic security for working families. As legislation that restores sanity
to our work week takes off in states across the country, well explore this
emerging movement and how one campaign in San Francisco already
has changed the lives of more than 40,000 service workers. Hear from
retail employees who are winning access to more predictable schedules.
Well weigh the challenges related to solving unfair scheduling, including
how to increase workers ability to organize and bargain collectively.
LGBTQ Ladies Doin It For Ourselves: Lessons Learned
and Opportunities for Engaging LGBTQ Women
LGBTQ women have been central players in many social change movementssuffrage, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, disability rights, reproductive
justice, racial and economic justiceeven if their identities as queer
women havent always taken center stage. Build a movement with queer
women as central players, and you can harness the passion, knowledge
and connections that queer women can offer. This panel features leading
advocates in a discussion of integrating queer women into progressive
causes. Who are queer women and how can we create holistic, engaging
campaigns? How do we feature queer women as spokespeople and leaders?
Hear from advocates, researchers and drivers of social change and
bring your questions and success stories in engaging queer women.

Living in a Militarized Zone

This panel will provide an overview of life in border regions, addressing
three specific phenomena of life in a militarized zone: the criminalization
of migrants through prosecution programs such as Operation Streamline, Border Patrol abuse and violence, and the disappearance and death
of migrants attempting to cross the U.S. Mexico border. These three
consequences of alleged border security measures reflect the normalization of anti-human policies and practices that increasingly move to
the interior of the country. This panel will uncover the intersections
of criminal law, the prison-industrial complex, the militarizing of our
civilian police forces and the killing of brown bodies.
Love is a Revolutionary Act: Using Culture to Shift
Narratives in Communities of Color
Shifting hearts and minds is one of the core principles of organizing.
But how do you do it well? Art and storytelling can be fantastic tools for
culture shifting and moving the political paradigm, especially in communities of color. This panel will look at a radical walking tour, essays
at the intersection of race and love, photo series, visual art at protests
and sci fi POC stories that can all create an empowering political space.
Mass Employment, Not Mass Incarceration
In October 2013, our incarceration rate was the highest in the world.
While the US has only 5 percent of the worlds population, it houses
over 25 percent of the worlds prisoners. With more than 2.3 million
people currently incarcerated and millions more affected by the system,
the labor movement has joined forces with criminal justice advocates
and the formerly incarcerated to take on the unfair system that privatizes
prisons, locks millions of people out of the job and housing market, and
creates second class citizenship. Join us to hear about recent victories in
California, how organizations and unions are combating the issue and
what we can do on the local level to decrease incarceration rates.
Mitigating Media Mansplaining
Opinion pages and Sunday political talk shows are notorious sausage
fests. And trolling, personal attacks and threats abound for those outside
that demographic who take to the internet to share their perspectives.
The result is a lack of diversity among columnists and commentators,
creating an echo chamber that systematically invalidates the perspectives
of women and other marginalized groups less likely to speak up (or have
opportunities to speak up). This creates an impoverished democracy in
which ideas go unvoiced, unheard and undebated. Using opinion writing
and TV commentary as a starting point, well explore whose ideas drive
our public discourse and how our understanding of the world suffers when
a wide range of perspectives is missing from the media debate.
Movement, Not Moment: Fighting Fast Track in Arizona
(sponsored panel)
Over the past year, progressive activists have joined together across the
country to organize unprecedented grassroots opposition to the deeply
flawed Fast Track process for passing trade deals. In this session, we will
learn how activists built this movement in Arizona and what lessons we
can carry forward as we work together on other issues.
Networking with Indigenous Communities
The Southwest is rich with traditions, cultures and nationalities. Indigenous
families and communities are impacted by issues like natural resource
extraction and immigrationissues that impact the health of the land,
wildlife, vegetation and people. Too often, our activism pits us against
our own tribal, state and country governing bodies while governmental
agencies stay at arms length. Native nations have government-to-government agreements and will not act on sensitive issues, often leaving the
people to rely on neighbors for assistance. What can be done to ensure
healthy, sustainable indigenous communities? How can progressives who
work on similar issues create coalitions with Native American organizers?

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS

If the Rising American Electorate is so Important,

Why Isnt it Reflected in our Staffing?
Progressives seek to remove barriers that keep minority groups from
realizing their potential in society. While this important work takes
place daily through government, campaigns and organizations, there
isnt a well-trained and diverse workforce to support this mission. In a
nutshell, the workers who make up the progressive community dont
reflect those we are working to help. This panel will serve as an opportunity to explore this problem by identifying the causes of our lack of
diversity in progressive institutions and in the history of the movement.
We will discuss solutions to expand the pool of diverse talent within the
movement including recruitment, training, placement and promotion.

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS

New Models for Digital Organizing in 2016 and Beyond

As 2016 approaches, digital organizing is now a critical component of
political and advocacy campaigning. Yet resources for digital operations
have become more scarce, especially for smaller groups and down-ballot
races. This has led many digital programs to find new and innovative
ways to provide services to their constituent organizations. Come hear
from community leaders from the DNC, DCCC, EMILYs List and
the AFL-CIO about how theyre creatively bridging the digital gap and
bringing digital organizing resources to those who need them the most.
New Voices, New Visionaries: Towards a Migrant Justice
Movement Led from the Queer and Trans Frontlines
Undocumented and previously detained trans and queer migrants will
discuss how their experiences have illuminated and defined the need for
structural change in U.S. society to address racism, homo and transphobia
and immigration injustice. Our community suffers acutely in detention
and faces an absence of health care, housing and jobs in Arizona. We
are responding by fighting detention and creating jobs, housing and
health initiatives that center the experiences, needs and leadership of
our trans and queer migrant community in and out of detention. Our
movement is providing solutions and social models that address injustice
as a whole with concrete social change. Because of deep and concrete
understanding of social justice, trans and queer migrants must be at the
forefront of social movements to build a new society.
Organizing Workers in the New Economy
The decline of unions has been a major factor in the rise of income
inequality. Yet we cannot look to old tools to rebuild worker power.
In the new economy, there are more contingent workers without access
to meaningful collective bargaining than there are workers covered by
collective bargaining agreements. Join us to hear how workers around
the country are building new types of organizations to exert power over
their economic lives. Youll hear from panelists who led the fight for $15
in Seattle, who are organizing low-wage workers in Texas and who are
building connections among workers in the sharing economy. Youll also
hear from the director of the Workers Lab, a new organization built to
incubate new worker organizations across the country.
Out-innovating Silicon Valley: How Nonprofits and B-corps
are Using Innovative Business Models to Keep Progressive
Technology Progressive
To build the next generation of technology to power progressives, a
handful of innovators are thinking differently about how to fund and
build a tech startup on sustainable progressive values. Utilizing nonprofit and alternative corporate structures, building creative funding
streams and partnering with progressive institutions and financiers,
these innovators are building all new business models for the progressive
movement. Come see how nonprofits and alternative corporations in
partnership with progressive institutions are in some cases out-innovating
Silicon Valley, finding new ways of financing their start-up and growth
and building technology that stays progressive for the long haul.
People Power: Energy, Electricity and Climate Justice
Dirty fossil fuel utilities are opposing progressive change, raising rates
and killing the planet, but people across the country, led by youth and
First Nations activism, are taking back power. Learn how climate hawks
and economic justice activists are working together to make our power
grid and politics cleaner, and fighting for more affordable and equitable
energy costs. National leaders and Arizona activists will share their stories
of how to build coalitions and create a greener, brighter future across
political, class and racial boundaries.

Progressives Role in the 2016 Primary Debate

Join us for a conversation about the best interventions that progressives
can make in the 2016 primary debateson both the Democratic and
Republican sides. How can we leverage our power across the movement to
ensure there is a vibrant debate, progressives have spaces to make their
voices heard, and the best ideas surface as we select the best candidate
on the Democratic side? And how can we fight against the misleading,
offensive ideas coming from Republicans, doing what we can to ensure
the Republican nominee is not well positioned to win the general? What
role, if any, should third-party and independent candidates play?
Raising a Ruckus: Rural Organizing for Progressive Change
Rural communities are more queer, more black, more brown and more
progressive than yall might think. Yet much of the progressive movements
organizing infrastructure leaves these vulnerable communities alone to
face attacks from conservative extremists. Grounded in an intersectional
strategy that elevates creating community and reclaiming spaces, queer
folks and people of color are finding ways to build power in rural areas
despite limited support or attention. Allowing progressive momentum to
start and stop at interstate highways means millions of people will miss
out on advances in LGBTQ equality, immigration reform and community
policing. This panel will explore what progressive change looks like in
rural communities and how immigrant rights and LGBTQ equality
activists are redefining what it means to be rural progressives.
Raising Wages is Common Sense Economics (sponsored panel)
Common Sense Economics is a program designed to help people
understand why our economy is not working and that the economy is
not inevitable, its shaped policy that can and should work for us all.
This panel will discuss how our economy currently functions and is
shaped, and then we will explore ways to put participants in the drivers
seat, to start changing the direction of this economy, as well as how to
create the messages we need to fix our economy. This panel is sponsored
by the AFL-CIO.
Reclaiming Media in the New Dawn of Black Liberation
Telling our stories to a wide audience is critical to changing narratives
about race and racism and advancing policy change. Where traditional
media outlets can be fickle, negligent or hostile, social media has often
stepped up to fill the void, from #BlackLivesMatter to #Pointergate.
Join us for a panel on using traditional, alternative and social media
successfully to change narratives on racial justice issues. Well discuss
how we can create media that better represents and advances the needs
of social movements and communities of color.
Return to Society: Restoring the Right to Vote for Ex-Felons
Our democracy is in crisis: turnout for the recent midterms was the
lowest its been since World War II. Today, we face a different emergency:
States are making it harder for many to vote. The people who are losing
out are those whove traditionally been marginalized in the political
processminorities. The end result? A government that responds to
the elite few at the expense of the many. Current laws effectively limit
the right to vote for people of color. Thanks to the war on drugs, black
men are imprisoned at disproportionally higher rates. When they complete their sentences, they are called to work, pay taxes and re-engage,
but in many states they cant vote until theyve completed parole or
probationif ever. How can we restore the right to vote and ensure
that these 5 million have a say in the electoral process?
Rocky Mountain High: One Year of Legal Retail Marijuana
in Colorado
This panel will discuss the successful experience of the state of Colorado
in the aftermath of Amendment 64, the ballot measure legalizing the
possession and retail sale of marijuana. Local advocates, business owners
and political stakeholders will offer their perspectives on marijuana
legalization and its effect on the states economy, public policy, state
finances, and public safety.

State Immigration Fights: Defending Rights at the State Level

While President Obamas administrative relief for millions of undocumented immigrants was a significant victory, many advocates continue
to work toward long-term solutions to this countrys flawed immigration
system. This fight is especially intense at the state and local levels.
Advocates and organizers in some of the toughest states for immigrant
rights are busy defending measures from driver licenses to tuition equity
while pushing back against anti-immigrant measures. Well discuss the
current state of play in state and local fights and what is being done to
diminish the influence of organized networks of anti-immigrant activists.
Stingrays, Drones and Fusion Centers: Coming to a Police
Department Near You?
The first leaked NSA document published by the media shocked many
but not everyone. Pervasive surveillance of communities of color and
activists isnt new. Recently, the use of surveillance and military technology
by local law enforcement has gotten more attention, especially in light of
demonstrations in cities across America. From fake cell phone towers to
automated license plate readers to new methods for bringing sources of
surveillance together, millions of dollars are being spent on surveillance
technologiesoften in the face of opposition and with the help of federal
grants. This panel will cover what this technology is, how its making its
way to streets across the country, how it affects racial profiling and free
speech, and what communities are doing to fight its implementation.
Student Debt Crisis: How We Can Help Stop the Next
Economic Bubble from Bursting
Rising tuition costs and mounting debt have put higher education
beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest of students. This challenge
threatens to lock generations out of living wage jobs and widen the
wealth gap in America. President Obamas bold plan to offer two years
of free community college is a step in the right direction, but its not
enough to reverse the disturbing trends in higher education. Even if
we made higher education free tomorrow, we would still need policy
solutions to help alleviate the existing $1.2 trillion in student debt. This
panel will explore big ideas to reform higher education and discuss what you
can do to ensure that this cornerstone of our society remains accessible.
Supporting Activists on the Frontlines Here and Abroad
Tear gas from the inner cities to Palestine; the Happy dance from
Ukraine to Taiwan; LGBT rights from Uganda to Utah. Movements
around the world are connecting organically and helping each other,
proving how ever-connected are our fights for social justice. Were
organically learning from each others local efforts while creating global
reach. But we havent quite figured out how to do this in more intentional
ways that will help us reduce duplication of effort and enable us to
evolve collective action for the 21st century. Meet activists from around
the world who have successfully built lasting community while reaching
global masses. And, in the process, theyve connected their local efforts
to much larger, global fights.
Taming the Trojan Horse of Religious Discrimination
For years, the progressive movement has avoided conversations about
religion, leaving just a handful of progressive faith leaders to tackle the
issue of how religion plays out in the public sphere. This fundamentally
flawed strategy has set the stage for right-wing organizations to legislate
discrimination against LGBTQ folks, women, poor people and immigrants
under the guise of religion. All progressives should be concerned about
the attempt to use faith as a trojan horse for discrimination, and this
panel will tackle some out-of-the-box ways to fight back.

The Ethnic Studies Ban: Why Attacks on Curriculum Matter

to Progressives
In 2010, Arizona conservatives passed a law banning ethnic studies.
Similar bans have been proposed in other states, part of a right-wing
plan to undermine education and create an undereducated electorate.
In other states, conservatives have banned AP history, rewritten history and
science standards and worked to keep the focus of classes and curriculum
framed in a way that is beneficial to their political agenda. Well discuss
how conservatives have worked to remove history, science and ethnic
studies from public school and what progressives can do to fight back.
The Evolution of Immigrant Rights: From Political
Empowerment to Progressive Change
President Obamas executive order on deportations was a major victory
for progressive-leaning forces in the immigrant rights community. This
panel will analyze how grassroots organizing and elevating the voices
of undocumented immigrants got us from comprehensive immigration
reform inaction to a victory in 2015. Well also discuss how we can
unleash that potential for progressive change for humane immigration
reform, the 2016 elections and beyond.
The Fight to Save Dodd-Frank
The GOP majority in Congress have made no secret of their hostility
toward financial reform and their desire to dismantle the key reforms
implemented by Dodd-Frank. With a GOP Senate majority and big
margins in the House there is a very real chance the safeguards passed
after the financial crisis of 2008 will be destroyed altogether. To prevent
another financial meltdown, and the possibility of needing another
taxpayer bailout of the banking system, progressives should be fighting
loudly and boldly to protect Dodd-Frank.
The First 10 Years of the Roberts Courtand How to
Change its Direction
This fall will mark the 10th anniversary of John Roberts taking the oath
as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court is supposed
to be where those seeking justice are able to have their voices heard,
but the pleas of racial minorities, women, religious minorities, workers
and consumers have seen decisions diminishing their rights while the
wealthy and powerful have watched their rights and influence expand.
Panelists will discuss major cases that will be decided this term including King v Burwell, which could deprive some 13 million low-income
Americans of subsidies they need to afford health insurance, and cases
regarding same sex marriage. With four justices who will be in their
80s during the next presidents first term, well discuss how to ensure
progressive justices dominate the Supreme Court in the coming decades.
The Great Equalizer: Advancing the Cause of Civil Rights
through Organizing
Collective bargaining is one of the best tools we have to advance civil
rights and equality for all. Labor has long been a staunch ally in social
movements for justice and equality, from the civil rights movement to
integration in meatpacking plants, from equal pay for women to Moral
Mondays. Many of the issues progressives are pushing for nowfor LGBT
rights and against discrimination of all kindshave been guaranteed
protections for workers under union contracts for decades. And workers
continue to be front and center in important current fights. From
Walmart to the fast food fights, workers know that equality issues are
often economic issues and that our fight is for the same respect and dignity.
This panel will discuss important ways that labor and progressives can
work together to fight for a more equal America.

State Battlegrounds: The Real Fight for Voting Rights

Nearly two dozen states have passed new voting restrictions since the
2010 election. At the same time, several states have moved to improve
access to the ballot. Congressional and court fights often receive wide
attention, but the highest-stakes battles are still happening in state capitals
across the country. This panel will examine those battles and distill
important lessonsfrom the voting world and othersfor how to craft
a successful strategy. Join us for a discussion about the best organizing,
communications and policy strategies to create a winning campaign.

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS

The Progressive, Grassroots Christian Movement You

Never Knew You Needed to Organize
This panel will unite faith-based organizers and strategists from various
movements including the National Moral Monday/Forward Together
Movement and the Sanctuary Movement on the US/Mexico Border.
Well explore how progressive Christians are expressing their faith
by becoming skilled organizers in multi-sectional and intersectional
movements for justice. Faith-based movements have much to learn from
broader movements for justice and vice versa. We are bringing faith
communities around the nation into coalition with broader efforts for
change. We are a collaborative, willing demographic being mobilized at
the grassroots level. We are training trainers, joining coalitions, doing
anti-racist work and defending the rights of our LGBTQ folks. This is not
your grandmothers church or rent-a-pastor agency of the past. This is
the church you never knew you needed to organize.
The Second Shift in 2015: Why #TooBusyToFail Burnout
Culture is Hurting Us All
Despite the growth of women in leadership since Arlie Hochschild
coined the term in 1989, the second shift is alive and well in 2015.
Full-time working women still shoulder twice the burden of housework
and childcare duties as their full-time working male counterparts, and
households headed by single mothers have grown exponentially over the
past 50 years (and are often left out of these conversations altogether).
Why is it still so hard to juggle the demands of work with the rest of
our lives? How can weorganizations, government institutions, and individualschange this #TooBusyToFail status quo? How do antiquated
ideas about what good families look like hold us all back? How can
men and women alike help women reach their full potential? How does
our traditional understanding of what it means to be a good worker or
a good parent need to shift to make it work? Join us for a discussion of
pragmatic solutions we can apply to our lives as individuals, organizations,
and activists.
The Untapped Power of Unmarried America
In 1980, 34 percent of adults were unmarried; today it is 47 percent.
Similarly, 18 percent of births were to unmarried mothers; today it is
41 percent. This panel will explore the lives of unmarried Americans
and how their economic and social circumstances are under-addressed
by current policies, as well as their impact and voting in elections. Were
the 2014 midterm election results a response to changes in American
families? How does that related to unmarried adults? When these groups
vote, they largely vote progressively but are underrepresented for their
VEP shares. They are under-registered and less likely to turn out to vote.
Unmarried America can have a real impact in 2016, but what are their
priorities and how should candidates court their votes?
This is What Democracy Looks Like
Citizens and activists across the country are fed up with a government that responds only to the needs of the donor class and special
interestsnot the vast majority of Americans. Panel attendees will
learn about the growing democracy movement and that while our
progressive goals may be varied, they are achievable if we coordinate
around common principles of getting money out of politics and
protecting voting rights. Holding America hostage to special interests,
these key issues will allow our government to truly be of, by and for the
people. This panel will explore our growing democracy movement, the
successes we have had and challenges we face.

To Change Everything, It Takes Everyone: Lessons from

the Peoples Climate March
The Peoples Climate March on September 21, 2014, was the largest
and most diverse climate march in history. More than 400,000 people
took to the streets of New York City for the mobilization, representing
social justice, labor, environmental, youth, womens groups and more.
The march generated thousands of media hits, built lasting strategic
coalitions and increased the momentum for international climate action.
This panel will go behind the scenes of the effort with some of the
marchs lead organizers to talk about lessons learned, next steps and
how all of us in the progressive movement can get out of the conference
halls and into the streetsbigger, louder and more effective than ever.
Transformative Change: Building Power from the Inside Out
The progressive movement is catalyzing a new vision for the future
based on equality, inclusion, justice and taking care of each other and
the planet. The effort necessary to change the dominant paradigm of
power over others to power with others requires the kind of deep
transformation that occurs when we take an integrated approach to
personal growth and social change. The most impactful organizing
happens when our aspirations for living in a more loving and just world
are aligned with the way we seek change. By engaging in self-care,
mindfulness and community healing practices, we build our power as a
movement from the inside out. This panel will present the how tos for
taking a transformative approach to change, offer hands-on opportunities
for personal and collective practice and facilitate a discussion about what
it will take to build a vibrant and effective progressive social movement.
Turning Young Activism into Policy
Millennials are inspiring and influencing public policy in a number
of ways. The panel will look to inspire and encourage your emerging
and future leadership. Through their grassroots efforts encompassing
campaigns, protests, social media and press, young leaders are showing
us ways to get millennials engaged and involved in politics. Even those
who are ineligible to vote have influenced policy. This panel will explore
how young activists got involved even at a young age and how their actions
have resulted in real policy changes, plus well discuss various ways to
engage this demographic.
Undocumented in Arizona: Immigrant Leaders Share
their Stories
Arizona is ground zero for many anti-immigrant laws and for harsh
treatment of immigrants. What is daily life like under these conditions?
What is the impact of the deportation system on Arizona families? How
are local leaders organizing in response? This panel of undocumented
leaders will speak from their personal experience of being undocumented
in Arizona and will provide context of the immigrant rights movement
and the courageous immigrant organizing in the state. Participants will
have a chance to dialogue with these movement leaders, to understand
the social and political forces at play in Arizona and to get direction for
how to be in solidarity with this local immigrant community.
Unions as the Answer to the Defining Issue of Our Time
(sponsored panel)
Its no accident that corporate-backed politicians have been on the
attack against unions. They know what we have known for a long time:
joining a union is one of the best ways to un-rig the system and level
the playing field for all workers. After decades of these attacks, wages
are dropping; inequality is rising; and women, communities of color
and millennials still face steep hurdles in todays economy. The system
is rigged. This panel will explore what the labor movement is doing to
reverse these trends and what challenges lie ahead. Theres no doubt
that strong unions are a key part of the solution to income inequality,
the only question is how workers will organize a winning movement in
the face of corporate-funded attacks. This panel is sponsored by the American
Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees.

Who Leads Us? Tackling Structural Barriers to a Reflective

Democracy
At WhoLeads.Us, we can now see for the first time the race and gender
makeup of our elected officials, from the county level all the way up
to President. Its not a pretty picture: of 42,000 elected officials, this
groundbreaking study found that 90 percent are white, 71 percent are
men and 65 percent are white men. In a country that is increasingly
diverse, this imbalance is not sustainable. So how do we change it? We
cannot continue to do it one candidate at a time, but rather need to
address the structural barriers that keep this dynamic stuck where it is.
In this session, well showcase emerging leaders who are engaging in
innovative pilot projects to tackle structural barriers preventing us from
having a reflective democracyone where our leaders reflect the people
they serve and tap into the full range of talent America has to offer.

Water, Drought & Climate Change in the Southwest & Beyond

Water is important everywhere, and nowhere is that more apparent than
here in the deserts of the Southwest. Access to water, droughts and
water policies affect everyone in the region. This panel will show how
waterand growing shortages in the Westhas an impact on other
progressive issue areas. Well discuss the droughts impacts on immigration,
and the plight of migrants who die as they cross the border. Climate
change is bringing on droughts and associated disasters such as wildfires, so well hear how firefighters protect their communities and work
to keep fire agencies adequately funded to keep pace. Finally, well
explore the role of public education and advocacy in shaping policies
that protect a sustainable water future.

Whos Got the Power? Moving a Womens Economic

Empowerment Agenda Forward
A womens economic empowerment policy agenda is a hot topic inside
the Beltway this year. So far, too few people are talking about these topics
in the progressive community. With a presidential election looming,
though, thats about to change. After all, women are more than 50
percent of the electorate, the majority of social media users, make
more than 70 percent of purchasing decisions and are 50 percent of the
entire paid labor force for the first time in history. People (and leaders)
are noting that our nations womens economic empowerment policies,
including on childcare, sick days, family leave and fair pay are seriously
outdated. Well talk about how to focus the spotlight onto advancing
effective policies that move our nation toward gender equalityand
why it matters to everyone and to our national economy.

We are One: Overcoming the Shared Opposition of the

LGBT and Reproductive Rights Movements
Domestically, they brought you DOMA and abortion bans; abroad, they
instigated the passage of Ugandas anti-homosexuality bill and are
thwarting reproductive justice in Latin America. Often, these actors
actions abroad go unnoticed in the U.S. Join us for a hands-on strategy
session that aims to exposeand challengethe right-wing forces behind
LGBT oppression and anti-reproductive rights campaigns, from Focus
on the Family to Rick Warren and Rep. Chris Smith. Well discuss shared
adversaries in the fight for sexual and reproductive rights. Learn from
activists on the front lines what you can do to defend LGBT and reproductive rights worldwide. Well break into groups to talk communications
campaigns, how to be an effective global partner, and how to engage in
campaigns to uncover at home what the oppositions actions are abroad.
Whats Next? What Every Organizer Should Know
about the Future of Health Reform
Getting the Affordable Care Act up and running was a giant step forwardbut it was only one step of many that still need to be taken. This
panel will look at some of the key areas of focus for health advocates
right now: insuring the undocumented, better meeting the needs of the
LGBT community, continuing to close the gap for those not yet insured
and other current activities focused on lowering costs and improving
care quality. Well also discuss what the future may hold for the ACA
on the heels of the King v Burwell decision about tax subsidies by the
U.S. Supreme Court (expected in June). In addition, well look at ways
ACA enrollment can be used as a springboard for other organizing
efforts, with examples from the field.

Women Leading the Labor Movement

This panel will explore the unique opportunities and challenges women
face while leading the labor movement. Some of the most innovative
worker organizing strategies of the 21st century labor movement are
being led by women. From the building trades and taxi worker organizing
to domestic worker organizing , the labor movement is under attack.
These women are re-inventing and growing the labor movement by
building worker power in sectors and industries that have been deeply
dominated by men. How do they do it? How do they balance their
aspirations and commitment to visions of collective worker power and
their personal lives? Who are their mentors?
Women on the Run

office. What unique skills and leadership challenges present for women
candidates? Hear from women on the front lines.

Using Psychology to Understand Why and When People

Donate (and Why and When they Dont)
Last year, University of Oregon psychology professor Paul Slovic released
a study showing that when you introduce facts about how big a problem
is, people are demotivated to help. People will donate to feed a starving
girl, but if you tell them there are millions of starving children just like
her, they are less likely to donate. This is not just a heart vs. head
situation. It is instead feelings negating other feelings. Even if you use
a powerful personal story that in-and-of-itself motivates people to help,
the mere introduction of facts about the big picture causes people to
lose the warm glow feeling of helping, feel overwhelmed and choose
to disengage. What does this mean for online organizing, the media
and even progressive funding, and how can we better understand this
phenomenon to become more effective agents for change?

Were Not Upworthy: Social Media for Organizations With

No Money, Time or Resources
Social media can be a fickle and frustrating beast, especially for

put into mastering its constantly changing best practices. And yet,
when it works, it can be one of the most cost-effective ways for small
organizations to reach new audiences and expand their base. Well

list. Or maybe they havent agreed yet, but you want to present decision
makers at your organization with a real plan to grow your community.
Either way, this session is for you. Well explore what steps you need to
take to begin running an acquisition campaign, what paid and unpaid

studies of successful acquisition campaigns.
Facebook and Twitter Ads: Using Paid Ads to Organize
on a Budget

How to Move Your Data from Excel to SQL
Many analysts are able to force Excel into doing the things they need.
But once the data gets big enough, their VLOOKUPs and pivot tables
break Excel, or force you to wait minutes to get data that should get
back to you within seconds. Though many people can teach themselves
how to query a database with the help of rigorous Googling, learning
how to actually get your spreadsheet data into a database can be daunting. Attendees will get hands-on experience in learning how to import
their data into a SQL database so they can stop wrestling with their
software and spend more time extracting meaningful analysis.
How to Not Ruin Your Website
If your campaign or non-profit is thinking about building or rebuilding
a website this year, its tough to know what will deliver results, and what

all year for a mediocre site design; DONT stress yourself out; and DO
deliver a great website that will get the job done. Come to this session
and learn the latest best practices including how to optimize for mobile.

Small-scale Facebook Campaigns for Better Email Performance

Email remains the medium of choice for digital organizers to communicate with their list. But your members only spend a fraction of

Turbo-charging Your Campaigns via Online Influencers
Kanye and the Kardashians are not the only online influencers with the
power to change the world. The most powerful communications come
not from nonprofits themselves, but from everyday supporters with
passionate voices who have the ability to reach broad audiences to drive
powerful action. These supporters, known as influencers, are passionate,
have the ability to mobilize an audience that trusts them. In fact, our
research has found that the top 5% of your database, on average, has
a reach 200 times larger than your entire email lists. Join this dynamic
workshop if youre ready to learn why leveraging the true power of
your network is a game changer and exactly how you can do this.

our civilization shifts in how people communicate, connect and engage
in commerce, what changes do organizations and movement leaders
need to anticipate to thrive? What new tools are coming online? What
tools do we need to build or get funded? What techniques will or wont
continue to work in online-offline movement building and awareness/
action campaigns? This training session will answer these questions
and more.

No Jedi Mind Tricks Needed: Harnessing the Power of
Narrative
Progressives too often lead campaign messages with facts, policy abstractions or the problem itself, losing the publics attention and failing

defend our shared values. We must begin engaging our base through
storytelling if we want to change hearts and minds and increase civic
participation. This training goes a couple steps beyond the story of
self, us, now training that you may have received and explores how
a collection of stories can create a lasting narrative and shape public

Beating Back Burnout Culture in the Progressive Movement

While committing ones life to the service of others is valiant, doing
so at the cost of ones personal sustainability is counter-productive.
The path to a sustainable progressive movement begins with investing in our own personal health, happiness and long-term vision for
our careers. In this training, Emilie Aries, founder of personal and
professional development training organization Bossed Up will review
the latest research on burnout, its root causes, and how we all can do
more to foster a climate of sustainable success.

Guerillarized Grassroots Advocacy

email blasts? Learn new disruptive and asymmetric strategies and
tactics to effectively overcome better financed and entrenched special
interests to change public policy in the legislative arena. These strategies and tactics were developed over the course of passing landmark
environmental legislation in California to protect sharks, condors,
and elephants. This training will help you find your oppositions weak
spots and provide you with the new media, messaging and legislative
strategy skills necessary to win when the odds are heavily against you.
How a Gender Lens Can Help You Win
Many multi-issue organizing groups, even some with impressive scale,
work on issues that deeply impact women but dont use an explicit
gender lens in determining their strategies, messaging or policy
asks. As a result, the unique needs, experiences and perspectives of
women, especially women of color, often remain out of view and
an enormous amount of potential is left on the table. Make It Work
has developed an engaging and accessible set of tools and a training
curriculum to help progressive organizations close this gap. We know
that organizing with an intersectional gender lens is a powerful tool
for change, and has the potential to significantly impact the reach
and scale of organizing efforts. Well show you how.
Multilingual Justice: Beyond Translation
With recent uprisings of low-wage workers fighting against poverty
wages, many grassroots organizers have a need to organize in a way
that transcends barriers of language. Creating multilingual spaces
in a consistent and inviting way can drastically change the culture
and dialogue of an organization. But translation is not enough.
Adopting a multilingual justice model takes translation to the next
level. It challenges the privileged of holding conversation in any one
language, and it opens participants hearts to other lived experiences.
This training session will explain what a multilingual justice model is
(and how it is different from translation), demonstrate what it looks
like in action, and recommend strategies for adopting the model in
your organization.

The Arizona Sound Strike: 5 Years Later

Five years ago, as one of the nations most restrictive immigration
laws was set to go into affect in Arizona, Zach Dela Rocha of Rage
Against the Machine organized the Sound Strike boycott of the
state. Over 100 nationally touring musicians joined the Sound Strike,
with a few canceling gigs and others scheduling free appearances at
protest events in the state. But the music community wasnt in complete agreement when it came to tactics. Some local promoters and
performers argued that fans were a key progressive audience in the
state who needed to be engaged, and the best way to do that was to
keep the music playing in the state and rally fans to vote and engage
around the issue. Now, with the benefit of five years of hindsight, we
gather organizers and musicians with various perspectives, taking a
look back at what lessons we learned and how they can be applied to
other progressive issues.

You Dont Have to Know Jay-Z: Activating Untapped

Networks of Artists
In the 2014 election, the ACLU of CA partnered with other statewide organizations to execute a public education campaign on felony
disenfranchisement, aka the Let Me Vote (LMV) campaign. Much
like dream hampton leveraged her personal relationship with Jay-Z
to get other celebrities to publicly support Californias Proposition 47,
the LMV campaign leveraged homegrown relationships with some of
San Diegos hippest artists to spread the word about felony disenfranchisement, voting and the 2014 election. Panelists will discuss how
to activate untapped networks of artists and cool kids within your
community to accomplish your political goals. You can spend a lot
of time on crafting the perfect message, but equal attention should
be given to cultivating messengers. And you dont have to know
HOVA to be successful in your own town! (Although, we are sure
it wouldnt hurt)

Arts Activism Amidst Borders and Ecological Collapse

Every year, half a million immigrants risk their lives and leave their
families behind in hopes of beginning a new life in the United States.
Many do not survive the harsh journey across the border, and those
who do endure a life split between cultures, histories and languages.
At the same time, rapid ocean acidification and rising CO2 levels
drive the Earth and its eight million species closer to collapse. As
the colonial world expands, borders are being violently redrawn,
further pushing whats left of the wild out of its habitat. Not only
are immigrants, indigenous peoples and the Earth entwined in the
violence and suppression on the borderlands, they are also connected
in their struggles and resilience. Can the creation of art mobilize and
empower the communities most affected by colonization and climate
change? Favianna Rodriguez, Mata Ruda, Jess X. Chen, Jetsonorama
and Thea Gahr will explore how their artwork, films, mural projects
and spoken word poetry can illuminate the ways in which the empowerment of immigrants, indigenous peoples and the Earth are inseparable.
S ATURDAY, 3 P.M.

The Art of a Movement

Artistic expression has played a major role in nearly every social
movement, from the freedom songs of the civil rights movement to
the use of graphic art by ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power).
Art has the power to transform culture, inspire the imagination,
reflect and uplift our experiences, and evoke powerful emotions that
can move people to action. In the reproductive health, rights and
justice movements, the oppositions grotesque images have dominated
the cultural narrative. This panel will feature the artists working to
flip this script. Through their poetry, film, performances and images,
they are building groundbreaking narrativesones that uplift the
voices of diverse communities, exposing raw, authentic, positive and
even imaginative possibilities of who we are as a movement and
where we need to be.

Corporations have their lobbyists in Washington,

D.C.; the people need advocates too. Thats where
PUBLIC CITIZEN (citizen.org) comes in. We serve
as the peoples voice in the halls of power, championing citizen interests before Congress, the executive branch agencies and

clean, safe and sustainable energy; a strong regulatory system; safe drugs
and affordable health care; citizen access to the courts; and a trade
agenda that can benefit Americans rather than multinational corporations.
We take no government or corporate money, which enables us to
remain fierce and independent advocates for the people.

The PROGRESSIVE VOICES NETWORK is creating

a progressive media-messaging platform for the digital
century. Not content with the status quo of vicious rightwing hate-talk and lies on AM radio, The Progressive
Voices Institute, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), streams national
progressive talk shows like Mike Malloy, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann,
Stephanie Miller and Ring of Fire to computers, smartphones, tablets
and connected cars 24/7. Weve freed progressive talk and messaging
from the clutches of the conservative broadcast oligopolies, and returned
them to the people. Rather than run 17 local commercial minutes every
hour, we run original, timely commentary, interviews and political satire.

When people hear about a streetcar project in their city

they immediately think more public transit thats good for
all people in our community. But our panel will show why this
is not the reality. These boutique streetcar really hurt working
people who rely on buses and light rail every day while benefiting
private companies who want to build and operate them and
government officials who award the projects.
