Henry V Worksheet

a) The film portrays King Henry as the ideal king thoughtful, strong,
determined and caring. Henry is able to change the style of his
speech and actions to suit the mood and atmosphere that he is
trying to create. In the film, Henry had to show that he is one of his
people and that there is a strong bond between them, a brotherly
bond instead of a king to servant bond. Henrys deep care is
expressed in the film before the Battle of Agincourt as he disguises
himself as a soldier to comfort his men, who have lost all their
morale after hearing about the sheer size of the French army. By
doing this, Henry is shown to have cared about how his soldiers felt
and wanted his soldiers to have faith in him. The film depicts Henry
as a courageous king since he is willing to fight in battle along his
soldiers and at the end of the battle, he can be seen carrying a dead
child to the graveyard, which is a feat no other king would have
done.
b) The most important moment was when Henry chose to disguise as a
soldier to talk to his men. Henry reveals the crushing responsibilities
he feels on his shoulders, with every man of England laying his soul,
debts, wives, children, and sin on the kings head. Henrys
willingness to envy a slave is very rare for a monarch. Shows his
ability to look beyond the ingrained and commonplace value
judgements of his society, entertain and independent perspective,
and place himself in the shoes of his subjects. He is motivated by
the sense of responsibility of his subjects, which makes very serious
and places his feelings behind his subjects.
c) The female characters are presented as weak characters whose
purpose is to marry and have children. They do not participate in
any of the fights and were there to take care of children. The
Princess of France, Catherine, was immediately used as a marriage
tool for the King Henry and did not play an active role in the film.
The film depicted that she had a choice which was unique because if
it was real then she would not have a choice at all. The plot
involvement of female characters reflects the Elizabethan views of
women as they do not play any major role in the movie.
