Problem:
Art Education is not important. Children need to focus on
those SCORES!!
No Child Left Behind

Significance of Problem

Time and funding for the arts have been increasingly slipping away.
When in fact, the arts could help improve their sought after scores.
Students are put under rigorous pressure to perform on tests, to get that score.
They are being tied down to the track and in threat of being run over!! Instead of being
offered an adventurous way to meet more realistic goals!

Research Question
How can using a process based lesson
promote a safe environment for inquiry &
dialogue?
What does a safe environment for learning look like?
How can incorporating a holistic approach to public
school curriculum build a safe learning environment?
How will this open inquiry, dialogue in the classroom?
How can this build community among students?
How can collaborative projects open dialogue?
Is a holistic approach an a/r/tographical approach?

John P. Miller : First, holistic education attempts to

nurture the development of the whole person. This

includes the intellectual, emotional, physical, social,
aesthetic, and spiritual. Perhaps the defining aspect of
holistic education is the spiritual.(pg. 2).

Spiritual- Spirituality is distinguished from religion, and

viewed as an awareness of the interconnectedness of
everyone and everything. (pg.18) Campbells article,
Holistic Art Education: a Transformative Approach to
Teaching Art

TERMS AND LIT

Process Based Learning- Engaging in any creative process while pursuing a
project with multiple steps or dimensions, which a student can make personal
connections to themselves, others, and the world around them. Through
transference and transmediation they can apply theories they are building to
their daily life and ultimately experience transformation on a personal level.

Nicole M. Gnezdas Article, Cognition and Emotions in the Creative Process

CreativityIt is a process of knowledge construction that emerges
from within a person and provides and experience rich with thought,
emotion, challenge, insight and hard work.

The 3 Ts
oTransference
oTransmediation
oTransformation

Theoretical Framework-A/r/tography

Stephanie Springgay and Rita Irwins article, A/rt/ography as Living Inquiry

Through Art and Text, It is about dwelling in a space of inquiry that resists
formal naming: A willingness to allow for discomfort, frayed edges, and
holes.

Assumptions
I know what is going on in the classroom from
a parents point of view-and what my kids tell
me!!
Most teachers in public schools can not apply
a holistic approach (WRONG-some are!!)
A safe environment for a teacher may not be
the same as a student
Teachers feel safe teaching
Kids will talk and inquire when they feel safe

Limitations
I have not had my own classroom in a public school
I am not a certified teacher YET, so I will patiently have
to wade through classes. (Looking for holes?)

Personal Bias-GROWING FURY

What challenges will I, as a teacher face incorporating a
holistic approach?
Approaching the topic of spirituality in the classroom
IRONY that the majority of early art is based in spirituality

Possible Findings/Discussion
Collaborative projects are going to lead to
strong growth among students
Students as a/r/tographer learners
Reflection process will help me narrow down
where and what I specifically want to focus on
(approach, age range I am comfortable
working with)
Kids are full of dialogue and inquiry if given
the time and space to create
