recast differs from the
learners ill-formed
utterance. The recast can
be isolated (an erroneous
part of the learners
utterances is formulated
with no new information
added) or incorporated
(the reformulation involves
additional semantic
content).

T: I think she will travel
together with her
boyfriend.
S: I think hes not pride.
T: Hes not proud because
he cheated.

c. Reduction
The reformulation of the
learners utterance may
result in reduction (the
recast is shorter than the
learners utterance) or
non-reduction (the recast
repeats the learners entire
utterance).

S: Yeah, Kal told me your


height is rather shorter.
T: Rather short. Rather
short.
S: Im a freshman.
T: I was a freshman.

T: Fed.
