1.0 Introduction
The Earthlings Day Program is the first disastrous awareness program organizes by Care &Cure
Society, Faculty of Education, UiTM Shah Alam. This society has reformed since 2010 and
actively conducting some welfare and educational programs that relates to environment and
phenomenon.

Cure & Care Society have collaboration with Ministry of Health Malaysia,

UNICEF Organization, Corporate companies, University Technology Mara (UiTM) and

University Malaya (UM). Due to the Natural Disaster have gave so many impacts to people
nowadays, we from Cure And Care Society want to propose on Earthlings Program which
strongly supported by our collaboration parties/
This program focuses on the lower form students of chosen school. This program was proposed
by the Care & Cure (C&C) Society President, Nur Azrina Binti Abdul Muluk also as the
Program Director for this program and being conducted with the help of the society members,
faculty administration and volunteer from University Malaya,
As the members of C&C society were inspired to come out with a solution to give awareness to
the students especially lower form student towards what to do when disaster struck and to give
them the knowledge about a few types of natural disaster that often happens in Malaysia. After a
long discussion and research conducted by the lecturers, counselor and the committee members
of C&C society, we have created this amazing program name as The Earthlings Day.
We invited a few schools that have been the victim of flood in Malaysia recently such as SMK
Kuala Krai, Kelantan, SK Manek Urai, Kelantan and other school which is not the flood victim.
We decided to invite a few schools more just to give them the exposure on the natural disaster
and how they can help other victims. Most of the students nowadays do not have the knowledge
on how to deal, act, help, cause and effects of natural disaster. From the research that we
conducted, most of the feedback shows that most of the students said they do not think that
Malaysia has the risk to have natural disaster. In fact, they are very surprised when we informed
them that flood and earthquake are among the natural disaster that we as Malaysian are facing
recently. They also does not know how to act when the natural disaster happening. Therefore,
this program intended to give students exposure and awareness about natural disaster.

Throughout this program, there are 3 modules that are being created by the committee members
of C&C and being led by our program director, Miss Azrina Binti Abdul Muluk. These 3
modules are made especially for these students. These modules have its own different objective
that emphasize on the awareness, the act and the help during natural disaster struck. Furthermore,
before these modules are being proposed, the committee had made a careful research in order to
find out the most suitable modules that suit to attract and give knowledge to the students. This
program will be held on 21st November 2015 at Faculty of Education UiTM Shah Alam.

2.0 Rationale
The Earthlings Day program focuses on the lower form students from form 1 until form 3 of the
selected school in Malaysia as an English proverbs sounds as the old cock crows, so crows the
young. Thus, we decided to invite the lower form students because it is the right age to educate
them with the knowledge and content regarding natural disaster. We want to give an early
exposure to the students and at this age, they are matured enough to think and be responsible
when natural disaster struck. They are 90 students from three selected school consist of 50
female and 40 male. These students are randomly selected from the chosen school to get
involved in this program. We decided to choose 3 schools and each school represents 30
students. We choose a small amount of students from different school so that they can spread the
knowledge among their friends in 3 schools. Hence the knowledge can be wide spread because it
involves 3 schools.
Furthermore, we are surprised by the earthquake happened in Sabah. Most of the Malaysian
does not expect it and does not know what to do during the tragedy. Most of us do not know how
to survive when the tragedy is happening. Since, this is still new for our country that has been
facing a severe earthquake, we do not have any experience on how to deal with an earthquake.
This program intends to educate the students on Natural Disaster that often happens in Malaysia.
We also want to create a fun, interactive and interesting environment for the students to learn. We
provide a few activities for the students to do, we share a few inspirational stories of the survivor,
and we let them explore their imagination to build survival tool using recycle materials. The
students will learn a few important action or precautions steps to be taken during or after Natural
Disaster occur. It is crucial for the students to know that they should have a prior knowledge in
surviving skills that they can help their family members during critical time.
Based on the name of the program which is Earthlings Day we are expecting at the end of this
program the students will have basic skills to survive natural disaster when it struck.

3.0 THE CURRICULUM

3.1 Needs Analysis
Recently we have been shocked with Earthquakes that happened in Sabah. The earthquakes that
happened has demolished all the houses and personal properties and gives a serious trauma to the
Sabah natives. Although Sabah is located in Island of Borneo, East Malaysia which is our
neighboring state, but we saw that many people from Peninsular Malaysia are still unaware what
happened to the Sabah residents and how it happens.
Furthermore, many countries are still lacking in the knowledge, capacity and resources to deal
with natural disasters. After a disaster the public sector is often paralyzed by damaged
infrastructure and unable to cover the costs of emergency and relief efforts, let alone
reconstruction work
From our perspectives, in order to regain awareness among community, Education is the only
effective tools to shape our young generation into a good defense system from any harmless.
Education is required to ensure that awareness building continuous in adult life because all of us
know the pen is mightier than the sword. Thus, the schools is main place that plays an important
role. Children from a young age must understand the perils to which their communities are
exposed and the appropriate response behaviors. Furthermore, we wants to focus on students
because although they were hard to receive or read newspaper but they are young and sizzling
generations that occupied with lots of informative technology gadgets where they can get news at
their fingertips in just speed of light. If we compare the natural disaster news with artist personal
story, the artist story would have a bigger impact on students and easily spread in social networks
like fresh foods from hot ovens.
On the 19 June 2015, our Program Directors Nur Azrina Binti Abdul Muluk along with the
Assistant program directors, Nur Hafizah Begum Binti Kamal and our treasurer Rohana Binti
Amidin and secretary Fatin Farhana Suhaimi have conducted an interview session in Faculty of
Education, UiTM. We had choose randomly some students from Faculty of Education and Intec
students to have a larger view having better knowledge in Natural Disaster.
7

The questions that we asked;

1. What do you think about Natural Disaster that happens recently in Malaysia
2. What is your first expression when you heard about the disaster that recently happens in
Malaysia?
3. Can you name one of it?
4. List down 3 early signs when that disaster occur?
5. How do you think we should overcome the problems or consequences after the Natural
Disaster occur
6. What do you think when you heard about Scala Richter?
7. How Scala Richter indicates the severity of the Natural Disaster?
8. Do you have taken any precautions steps after you heard or read about the Natural
Disaster that recently happened?
We have conduct this interview verbally and have recorded to keep for our records. The
identities of the respondent would be kept secret as requested by the respondents.
Statistically, we have choose 16 female and 14 male students from both institutions. From
Faculty of Education we choose 18 students and from INTEC was 12 students.

The

interview session was conducted for almost 2 hours from 10 am to 12 pm at Library INTEC
on 20th May 2015
Based on the interview conducted, we feels sad because most of them unaware what are
happening in Malaysia especially about disasters. The first question answered by almost 25
respondents feels sad to hear about the disaster. Moreover, on the second question their
answer mostly on volcanoes, flood and tsunami. We felt miserable towards the Earthquakes
victims because these students does not have any idea what had happened to them. For the
third question majority only can answer 1 or 2 signs and only few could gave us 3 signs. This
shows that they are unaware what had happened and how it happened. On the fourth question
these students unable to answer specifically and just said we should donate to them. From
this question we are expecting answers like we should help them by enrolling in volunteer
programs by going to the victims place and helps to clean up. Moreover, the students also can
answer like we could gave the victims a temporary shelter by providing a shelter place in
Peninsular Malaysia. .On fifth answer they only can answer Scala Richter is a term that can
detect how bad the disaster occur. They unable to define specifically what thus it mean and
8

for sixth question some of them answer the Scala Richter above 7 indicates very high and
below 5 is low severity. Yes, it is very true but only few could answer it and majority only
can answer higher the magnitude larger the impact it gives without giving specific answer of
it. For the last question, the answer really shocked us because most of them which is 27 out
of 30 said does not take any precautions yet because media does not inform them. They also
added that the natural disaster does not happens in their areas but far from their neighboring
areas. Thus the probability for the natural disaster to occur in their housing areas is very low
and they would only start to take precautions steps when the disaster is expected to happen.
We expected they could gave us answer like they have packed some important things and
informed their family member to keep all the personally identity card and passport in safer
and easily available place. Furthermore, they also should save some cash in their house when
they cannot use ATM or their debits cards anymore. The foods also should be restocked when
almost finish to avoid hunger during critical times. This give a big impact on us and urges
our deep heart to make some transformation for our young citizen that might rule our
country in future to have some responsibilities and awareness on this matter. They should be
a kind of hope for the best but prepares for the worst when they face this conditions.
.

3.2 Philosophy

3.5 Content
This program comprised of four slots which planned to be conducted in one day
program. Our program is called Earthlings Day. This program theme is fun and
educational where the students would be playing hands on and moving from one

11

place to another to make them excited. We trust that the students movable and
interesting activity can attract student attention because we know action speaks louder
than voice. Let them experience on their own and discover it. The details of each
content is stated below;

Slot 1: Ice Breaking Session

Venue: Intec Lecture Hall
Date: 21st November 2015 (Sunday)
Time: 8.00 am 8.50 am

Learning Outcome
At the end of the slot, the student should able to;

To get to know each other in their group.

To understand their friends are still same to each other although from different

background family
To feel attached to the facilitator and a chance for facilitator to get know the group
members

This slot is an introduction for each of members and facilitators in purpose to attract their
attention and focus into the program. Although we does not emphasize too much on academic
performance but we need their attention and awareness on how important is the program for
them. This slot would be started with Ice Breaking program such as playing little games, sing
along songs, dance and other fun activities. We planned to have about 90 students which would
be divided into 9 groups. Each group holds 10 members and each group will be assigned by 2
facilitators. The facilitator before the day of event will be briefed on the flow of program and
what is their role. The facilitators would conduct all the activities in their group so that the
facilitators also know well about the members. This will make their bonds between them get
12

more attached. Later the head facilitator will take turn to explain the flow of the program while
choosing some students to introduce his or her group members accordingly.

Slot 2: Exhibition Session Explore and Acquire

Recognize the important steps to be taken after the Natural Disaster occur
In this slot, three classrooms would be used. In each classrooms we group it into
Tsunami, Flood and Earthquake. Tec 1 classroom would be for Tsunami, Tec 2 for Flood
and Tec 3 for Earthquake. We choose 3 Natural Disaster out of many because we wants to
focus only that often occur in Malaysia. In each classroom 6 facilitators would be
assigned to decorate the classroom and paste all the information about respective natural
disaster in that classroom. We planned each classroom to have 3 division. Each division
has its own explanation. For example Tec 1 is for Tsunami In first division two facilitator
would explained about induction of Tsunami, second division another two facilitator
would explain about how Tsunami occur and third division is how we react and what are
the precautions steps that need to be taken if Tsunami occur. In third division another 2
facilitator would be needed. In each division after the student listen about the information
the division facilitator will give handouts and they have to answer the question in each
division before going to next division. Here the group facilitator would play their role to
assist the students to answer the questions and collect the handouts back after the students
answered it. Then the groups would go into next classroom and the cycle continues to
other groups. The handout later would be marked and the group marks would be
tabulated. At the end, the highest group mark will be given prizes.

To outline the process from early stages until post stages of the process of Natural
Disaster occurrences
To define what and how Natural Disaster occur in Malaysia

In this slot the students would be given a feedback form for them to answer and handouts. From
here we will evaluate how much the students understand the content of this program. We will
also have some fun talk by asking students to come in front and share their experience. From
here we want to see how far their awareness on Natural Disaster that often occur in Malaysia.
The question we asked previously during interview would be asked in their feedback form. Then
the prize giving ceremony would be held.

3.7 Methodology
In this program we have 3 modules which we planned to be conducted in one day program.
Our program is called Earthlings Day. This program theme is fun and educational where the
students would be playing hands on and moving from one place to another to make them feel
excited. We prepared 3 different theme classroom which is Tsunami, Flood and Earthquakes
and every student must come and complete question on given handouts at each classroom.
We asked our C&C members and UM volunteers to be the facilitators and conduct the 4
modules including ice breaking.
The first module is the ice breaking session where students get to know each other and create
bond between them. We prepared a few songs to break the ice among them such as
16

Gemuruh songs by Faizal Tahir and Chip-Chip dance to make the crowd feels happy and
excited to start the program. The second modules is the exhibition session Explore and
Acquire where students get to three classrooms with three different natural disaster cases
and explore about the natural disaster. We gave a talk to explain about the most common
natural disaster that hits Malaysia. The third module is Lets Survive!! this is where we
discover the method to survive from the natural disaster tragedy. We encourage the students
to use their creativity to come out with their own survival tools out of recycle things. For
instance, they can tie up bottles to make a raft. The fourth module is Its Brainy Time
where the students must answer the handout given to them. We distribute question paper
regarding the natural disaster that they have learnt throughout the program and have few
interview session verbally with them while they share their experiences in participation of the
program.

3.8 Evaluation
3.8.1 Types and number of assignment/evaluation
We have prepared five types of evaluation. It consists of entrance survey, handouts, evaluation
form, exit survey and interview.

3.8.2 Allocation of marks

Each question in the handouts has their allocation mark. We have three handouts. Each handout
contains 10 marks. Sum of mark for handout is 30 marks. For activity that use recycles things to
17

make a raft the allocation mark is 20 marks. Sum of all mark based on their handout and activity
is 50 marks.

3.8.3 Evaluation of programs

For entrance survey, we have prepared form that will be distributed to all students to know their
previous knowledge about natural disasters. For handouts, we have prepared it for each
checkpoint/exhibition. The handouts given contain some exercise or activity that they must finish
it in order for them to increase their understanding about natural disaster. Before end of this
program, evaluation form will be distributed to all students. Students have to answer it according
what they feel about this program. It can be seen whether the program has achieved the
objectives. Other than that, we have provided exit survey form to all the students. The entire
element in entrance survey form is same with exit survey form. We want to know whether they
gain more knowledge than their previous knowledge about tsunami, earth quake and flood.
Lastly, we pick randomly students also facilitators conduct an interview for them also to know
whether the objectives have been achieving. Also, from the interview we could know their
opinion about this program and the element that we should fix or added to make this program
more successful.
*All the handouts, entrance and exit survey form, evaluation form and interview question
included in appendices.

5.0 CONCLUSION

This programme give a lot of benefits to the student as it meet its objective. It also been
supported by Ministry of Health and Environment. All the facilitators prepared a lot of
information and current issues for the students regarding the topic of environment, health and
many more. Hopefully, students will aware more about the natural disaster that occur in our
country for instance flood, Tsunami and earthquake.

Moreover, facilitators also discuss and exchange information and opinions with the students
regarding the precautions of natural disaster. Other than that, they also discuss about the
important things that they should pack first and who they should call first to ask for help.

By the same token, students also polished their skills in this programme to be creative in making
the raft by using bottles. This activity can help them to prepare their transport if they are facing
raining heavily at their house. Other than that, teamwork also implemented by this activity as
they work in a team to produce a strong and stable raft. In short, moral values have been
implemented in this activity.

All in all, if the objectives can be achieved, it means that the program is a success. The flaw of the
program, if there is, will be fixed and the upgraded version of the program can be held in the future
for the same purpose. It can also be a guide to a different program that having the objective that are
almost the same as this program.
