Mestas Dear Juan: Tam pleased to offer you appointment as Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint, subject to approval by the Board of Regents, I know you will bring great distinction to this important position for the University, and I look forward to working with you. As chancellor, you will report directly to me, and in addition to serving as the chief executive officer for the Flint campus, you will serve as an executive officer of the University of Michigan, Your appointment will be effective September 20, 1959, and will be for a renewable term of five years, ending September 19, 2004. We will conduct a reappointment review before the end of your term. ‘The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Michigan-Flint has recommended your appointment as professor with tenure in the Department of Foreign Languages. ‘We will submit this appointment for approval by the Regents in conjunction with your appointment as chancellor. Your starting salary as chancellor will be at the 12-month rate of $160,000. in 2000, you willbe eligible for annual merit increases as determined by the president. Ifyou decide to return to the faculty from the chancellorship, your salary will continue at the chancellor's rate for a period of six months, in order to ease the transition. ‘Thereafter, your salary would change from a 12-month basis to an academic year basis and would be setat the average rate of the three highest professors’ salaries in the humanities departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. During your appointment as chancellor, you will accumulate one inonth of sabbatical leave for each year you serve, with an extra month added for completing a five-year term. ‘You may select staff benefits from among those available to all University of Michigan. ‘employees. As provided by University policy, we will reimburse you for documented moving expenses for your relocation to Flint, up to the equivalent of one month’s salary. In addition, you will receive a one-time taxable payment of $12,500 to help cover additional costs of your transition. We will also cover travel expenses for visits to Flint or Ann Arbor prior to your appointment. During your tenure as chancellor, the University will maintain Ross House for your use as residence.
