Stania Tutnjevi
On the Terms Poetics and Poetology
Summary
The noticeable spread of the term poetics has given interesting and productive
results, but also creates certain problems because it leads to increasing terminological
vagueness, sometimes even to confusion. Some theoreticians are trying to synchronise
and harmonise the very diffuse and broad range of meanings that the term poetics has
today, with a view to possibly establishing some kind of typological differentiation afterwards. In most cases, such efforts result in the realisation that the term poetics has a
broader and a narrower meaning. The narrower meaning presupposes focusing on the
inner, structural organisation of a text, whereas the broader meaning also encompasses
the overall premises for the coming into being and the functioning of a work of literature. In our situation, this issue assumes a hitherto entirely unnoticed nuance: namely,
along with the narrow view of the term poetics, in our language we come across the
term poetology, which articulates its expanded meaning referred to above. The paper
deals with this phenomenon, which, as far as we know, is not manifested in other languages, and provides an expanded explanation of it.
