Adrijana Marcetic
Structuralism in Literary Theory
S u m m a r y
The authors intention in this paper is to present the notion of structuralism in
literary theory, as well as to give a brief survey of its history. Her central concern
is with structuralism as a specific approach to literature, its definition and its place
in different national literatures, both European and American. The author begins
with reference to Russian linguist and critic, Roman Jakobson, who is credited with
introducing the idea of structure in the study of literature. Special consideration is
given to the influence of Jakobson and Tinjanov on the study of literature generally
in Europe between the First and the Second World War, especially in Prague school
of linguistics. The author points to a traditional resistance in American academia to
theoretical approaches to literary study as one of the factors significantly marking
the reception of structuralism in the US, where it is often equated with French lite
rary theory from the 60s, i.e. theories of R. Barthes, C. Bremond and T. Todorov.
The author closes her paper with reference to the contribution of structuralism to the
literary scholarship.
Key words: structure, structuralism, code, message, dominant, linguistics,
theory of narration
