1. My first two years as a college student was spent as a

premed student at UCSD. So why did I change my career
choice to education two years into college? I had to answer two
questions: Why do I want to be a teacher? and What do I
hope to accomplish?

questions

2. To answer the first question, I needed to reflect on my own

educational journey. What roles did teachers have in helping me
get to where I am? I began by examining my middle school
years. I went to a public school called Los Arboles. Many of my
teachers there were very forgiving, such as my 6th grade science
teacher who let me retake the same math test as many times as
I wanted until I got an A. Teachers provided me with very little
challenge, and I left middle school thinking I was completely
prepared for any academic task.

3. Then, my parents decided to send me to York College

Preparatory School for high school. For the first time, I failed
tests and got Cs in my report cards. Suddenly, I was confronted
with the reality that I did not know how to think critically or
deeply. I couldnt memorize the information for a biology exam,
think flexibly during geometry, or write an essay without run-ons.
I was constantly tired from the mental demand to catch up
academically and the physical demand such work required.

4. However, the teachers at York played an important role in
helping me improve academically. One thing York teachers did
was to show that they saw each individual student and cared if
that student did well or not. For example, my 9th grade biology
teacher sent home a note to my parents during the third quarter
commending my marked improvement during the school year.
The teachers also made it clear that I had to meet their
standards in order to get an A, but that they were always
available to help me meet those requirements.
5. Based on my experience with teachers at York, my answer to
the first question is this: I want to do for my future students what
York teachers did for me. I want to encourage and empower
individual students through actions such as sending notes home
to the parents. I want to set high standards but provide scaffolds
that cater to individual student needs. I also want to let students
know that they will be challenged, and that struggles will occur
during the school year. But I also want them to understand that I
am there to guide them and help them become people who can
use a variety of critical skills to navigate their way to their dream

careers. All of this is what I hope to accomplish as a teacher.
