Dos
1. Make the cover letter as personalized as possible. ( Write the name of the professor at least
3 times)
2. Try to be as close to his research area when you mention your own
3. See his last 1-2 years publications. Areas of interest keep changing within 1-3 years of time.
4. Whenever you mention that I have read your paper titled ,XYZ, try to see that the paper is
either highly sited, or is a new one (2012-14)
5. It is not necessary to mention about reading a paper. You can see his project list and say that
you are interested in pursuing this type of project.
6. CC the mail to his/her assistant.
7. Gentle reminder after a week or two. ( 10 days is a good time)

Donts
1. Your CV should be 100 percent correct. Avoid lying.
2. Do not mail more than 2 professors from the same university, and even for
those 2 professors, keep a mail distance of at least 2 weeks.
3. Do not mail on a Saturday/Sunday
4. Do not cc the same mail to different professors (Very insulting to the profs
and sets a bad impression on IIT G)
5. Do not spam, but app. (There is a THICK line of difference)
6. No flowery language.
7. Avoid words like, various, many. Be number/content specific.

Writing a Research Proposal


1. If the professor selects you for the internship, he may ask you to write a
research proposal
2. You can include in your cover letter that you are willing to write a research
proposal
3. This shall show an increased your increased credibility in the eyes of
professor.
4. Try to make a 1-2 page proposal by reading 2-3 review papers/latest
papers and seeing the professors latest work. Add images if possible.
5. Read publications of the professor, or the latest papers in journals, or
review papers before making a proposal. Be specific and scientific in
your language.
6. Your ideas should not be vague. They should be related to the work of the
professor. In case you are doing experimental work, you should ensure

UNIVERSITIES
1. Try to go for Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan.
2. It is difficult to get an intern in USA/Europe
3. It is better to go in an A grade Asian University viz. B grade Eastern
university.
4. See that the professor has decent number of PhDs, Post Docs and
Masters students.
5. A lot of universities have programs (generally for 3rd years).
6. IAS program in India. IISc, IIT B/K/KGP/M/D are good options as well.

VISA
1. Get a passport ASAP!!
2. Apply for the VISA
3. Be complete with all the formalities like NOC, Offer letter before applying.
4. You may be even asked for Affidavit, income tax details of the parents.
5. VISA/Passport may be the single biggest barrier for the internship. DO NOT
TAKE THIS LIGHTLY.

INDUSTRIAL INTERN
1. Mail the HRs.
2. Try to get a family contact.
3. It is relatively easy to get an intern in PSUs.
4. Companies ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, GAIL, Cement companies, etc.
5. Contact your seniors and ask them for contacts.
6. The internship generally lasts for 4 weeks. The quality of learning is
generally low in a PSU.

Management/ Startup Intern


1. You can do a finance/marketing intern in a company
2. You can also do an intern in a startup
3. See that the work quality is good. (No mazdoori)
4. See that the work you may have done in a fest doesnt closely resembles the one
you do in a startup.

TRY TO LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN IN AN INTERNSHIP, DO


NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.
Take GRE/GMAT in case you are not doing a heavy internship. Start preparing for the
internship for 3rd year as companies come in August/September. Try to improve your
language/soft skills.
Read books/newspapers if you have not till date. English is very important for your personal
growth and confidence. It will matter a hell lot in your 3 rd year internship and placements.
