Camp
Relays
The title of this journal speaks for itself. A crazy
relay at camp. Not only were there crazy active
parts but eating parts which made it even crazier.
As the challenges went on they got harder. It
started off as some physical challenges and then
the last 3 were food challenges. The first one was
put a nylon leotard on your head and eat pudding
out of the cup. Next was eating a can of beans only
with our mouth which was on a paper plate. And
the last one was eat a squished massaged banana,
chug a 7up then run down to the end of the doc
jump in and then run back to your team and make
a pyramid. You may think that is easy, but this
creates almost the same reaction of vinegar and
baking soda. Not only this but you had to wear the
weirdest things while you are doing this. My group

Survivor
The survivor challenges were actual challenges. Not just an easy three legged
race challenge but gross ones like, life-saver and a toothpick, mini-marshmallow nose
shooting, and marshmallow armpit race.
The first challenge we did was the life-saver toothpick challenge. This is
where you each have a toothpick in your mouth and you pass the life-saver down you
teams line and back. This may sound easy but it is not at all. My team believe it
or not dropped and broke 3 life-savers, but came in first. This challenge was fun,
but I wasnt expecting the next 2 challenges that were coming my way.
I have never doing anything like this in my life. Shoving a mini-marshmallow
up my nose and then shooting it out to see how far I can get it. Something I had
never expected to see was a HUMAN eating these just for fun, without anyone
suggesting or telling him to! Boys can be so disgusting sometimes. When it was my
turn they got literally 2 cm away from where I was standing.
Marshmallows are good on their own, but if you add an armpit it doesnt go to
well. Even though the point of this game doesnt make sense at all this is it. Stick
a marshmallow in your armpit and then we ran about 100 metres and back. Then we had
to eat it. Mr. Nickel decided to give an example, so he stuck one in his armpit while
Mr. LaForest talked about something else. Not to mention he looked like he just
jumped in a time machine form Mei in the 60s. He ran around the gym for about 3
minutes. He took it out and asked for a volunteer. Of course all the boys were dying
to eat this Mr. Nickel was looking for someone in specific. A particular person. A
girl. There was one person in the crowd who stuck out. Elisabeth, who was raising her
hand high in the air. She skipped up plopped it in her mouth and swallowed as if she
hadnt seen what had happened to it. She then galloped away smiling while I gagged
just at the sight if this. After this scarring event we got into this challenge. We
all lined up and we were off. When it was my turn I ran as fast as I could while
holding my arm in an awkward position. Without thinking I took the marshmallow and
swallowed it whole for the sake of my team. Everyone on my team finished and we
finished in first!
Although this experience may have been disgusting, that doesnt mean it wasnt fun.
hands and knees on the ground. Then we had people on them trying to hoist the person going up
the wall, and then back and leg spotters. This failed and failed fast, in fact it failed in under a
minute. Now when we figured out a new strategy it worked a lot better. Our strategy was to have
2 people as the lifters and the rest were leg and back supporters. I was a lifter again and a back
supporter. We lifted a few people up and then I went. They had a hold of my feet and then
pushed me up the side of the wall. When my hands hit the top the 2 dads at the top pulled me
over the top and onto the platform behind the wall. I then went back to the other side to help get
the rest of them up the wall.
My favourite station of all was the tire and the pole. This was a 12 foot high pole with a
tire at the bottom. Your team had to get the tire on and off in the station time limit. Our strategy
was to have 3 people at the bottom with people standing on them and then someone on one of
their shoulders and the 2 others standing for support. I was on the bottom with another person
standing on me and someone on top of her. It got frustrating being at the bottom because they
were complaining at the top that they were going to fall or their arms were getting tired. For me
at the bottom I had at least 180 pounds on my shoulders, and the person standing on me
randomly decided to dig their toes into my spine. I hugged the pole for support and waited for
something to happen. All I could do was look at my feet and hope not to collapse from my legs
giving out. Finally the whistle blew but we hadnt gotten it over, though it was a relief to have the
weight off my shoulders.
Overall the team initiatives course was so much fun and probably one of my favourite
parts of camp. Even though we couldnt complete every single station I think we all still had a
great time working as a team together.
The Climbing
Tower
We all walked down the forest trail in the sunlight to the climbing tower. This
thrilled me, I love climbing walls or anything like it. Arriving at the wall I starred up
at it, I imagined myself climbing up the chimney. The chimney is a part on the
climbing wall where you go up three connected walls. You may get scrapes and cuts
but I wanted to do it so badly.
Tightening our harnesses and strapped our helmets, we walked to the other
side of the climbing wall. They then told us which climbing walls were open.
There will be three walls open. The instructor explained.
Time seemed to stop, it stopped when I realized that we were standing in
front of one wall with three sections of climbing. The one problem was the chimney
wasnt one of them. There would be the beginner wall, the intermediate wall and
the taco.
I asked the instructor, and he said the person who operated it wasnt at this
station today. Disappointed, after a year of waiting to go on the chimney turned and
went in line for the taco. As I waited in line I thought about the chimney. Even
though I didnt get to climb it, I would at least still get to climb a wall. The reason
they call it the taco, is because you have to have your right hand and foot on one
side and you left hand and foot on the other.
When my turn came I said the commands and climbed on. At first my feet
slipped on the small coloured fake rock, but I then got the hang of it and got to the
top easily. I reached the top and kissed the thick silver bar at the top. Just like on
the screamer I floated to the ground and got my belay taken off. I got in line again,
but the line had only gotten bigger. I waited in the line again until it was my turn
again. This time I raced up without slipping, when I got back to the ground my
belayer told me that I was one of the fastest people ever to get up the taco and that
it was either one minute or under.
I now I lined up for the beginner wall just for fun, but soon became a
competition. Most of the kids had left to go play on the beach but we still had time
left so I wanted to do the beginner wall. Harnessed up I climbed up the wall like it
was nothing, and kissed the unsanitary bar for the third time that day. Sometimes I
find it hard to believe how much of a challenge this was for some people to do.
When I got down, my activities leader Terry (Mr. Ward) challenged me to get up the
wall in 30 seconds or under, and if I did he would get me a pack of skittles.
One thing you should know about me is that I am highly competitive. If I
didnt walk away with a pack of skittles in my hands I would die inside until I
somehow got back to Thetis Island and get it in 30 seconds or under.
So I tried on my first attempt of the challenge I got 32 seconds. As I kept
going more and more my lips got dirtier, hands got sweatier legs got sorer and most
of all my time kept getting better. At around my 3-4 attempt I told myself that this
was my last time and that I would get it. I approached the wall slowly and put my
foot right above the first rock thing. I grabbed on and kept pushing till I go to the top
and gave it a final kiss. More nervous than ever I slowly dropped to the ground.
Meanwhile Terry was as silent as he had been the whole week. And trust me, it
doesnt mean good things when he is quiet.
I walked with shaky legs over to him, looked down at his phone and saw,
30.23. Even though I was .23 seconds too slow he still gave me my reward and I
was satisfied with my time
My experience with the climbing tower taught me to never ever give up on
yourself, if I would have given up I would have not gotten the skittles and it would
have bugged me for the rest of my life, and I would have had regrets.
The Screamer
I reached the top and balanced my feet on top of the 40 foot high telephone
pole. I looked to the trapeze bar 4 feet up and 6 feet away. Then starring down to
the ground, and saw about 30 others starring up at me, yelling Go Cailin! I
concentrated on the bar once again, bent my legs, and flew with my arms spread
out reaching for the bar, and my goal.
I raised my hand high in the air when the screamer instructor named Chris,
asked who wanted to go first. He picked me, two other boys and one other girl. I
ended up going fourth out of us. Slipping into my harness I wondered if this was a
good idea right after a fulfilling dinner of tacos. My turn approached slowly but
finally it came.
My foot hit the first step of the ladder, I knew very soon I would be leaping off
of a telephone pole. I was almost to my goal, catching that bar, the feeling of
exhilaration. This excited me so I raced up the ladder and then I reached the hinges
poking out of the post. I placed my first step on the first hinge. As I got higher and
higher I got even more eager. When I got near to the top I had to turn around.
Finished turning I balanced my right foot on top of the 8 inch disc.
I wouldnt say my feelings were scared or nervous, but quite the opposite.
Fearless and relaxed. Watching the ground while Mr. Nickel took I picture of me.
Many thoughts raced through my head. Would I make it? Will I miss? Will my hands
slip off?
After I cleared those thoughts from my mind, I focused with all the
concentration I had on the bar just as Chris said to do. I stretched my arms out and
soared, like I was flying. As my hands hit the beloved trapeze bar, a chill of relief
went up my spine. Everyone cheered and I let go of the bar. I floated down to the
ground like spider man. When my feet touched the Earths dirt, all I wanted to do
was go up again. Experience it at least once more, just to feel the relief of catching
the bar and the exhilaration of climbing up. It was one of the best experiences of my
life.
Even though I wasnt scared or nervous to do the screamer, that night I
thought about how if you were frightened to do it but you did it could be like God
helping you through your daily life challenges. This helped me better understand
what some of my peers may be feeling.
