VIDEO INSTALATION

Trajectories is a modern
installation that is a projection-
based installation created for
Chromatic 2015 in Paris. It uses
a unique technique that freezes a
series of objects before animating
them sequentially through
projection mapping. The creators
of the Trajectories project
describe the art piece as a
homage to time the effects of the
installation are hypnotic and
surreal. The installation is
viewed between a series of
screens that although are two
dimensional, give off the effect
that there is depth. The
Trajectories project was very
successful when it was presented
to the installation festival.

One of the most famous modern

practitioners of video installation
is Nadia Hironaka who has won
various awards for her practice of
installation presentations around
the world; she has won the award
for the New York short exposition
festival. Since 2008, Hironaka has
been exhibiting her work in
galleries and museums and she is
also the founder of the publication
screening. Through this project
she is dedicated to expanding to
the media exploring influences of
moving image culture. Her artistic
works include surreal and
contemporary art exhibitions that
often display video clips that are
filmed by her work partners
montaged and collaborated.

In 20 Steps By Drift is a live installation by Drift Studios, and is part of
a group exhibition casted during Venice Biennale 2015 witch is a art
exhibition. It is held at the Saint Petersburg Museum. This installation
is a revolutionary piece of work as it is a live animatronic that features
many moving sequenced parts. The work displays an artistic
viewpoint of flight and flight in motion; it was inspired by natural
flight as represented in the wing and body like shaped construction.

This instillation is a physical
structure that relies on connections
that produce a light appearing object
that is shaped through grid like
tubes. The network is purposely
irregular as it is attempting to
portray an unpredictable
personality. This installation has a
variety of different behaviors
programmed witch each respond
differently to the sound in its
environment. With over 200
connections with added LED lighting
to the tubes making up over 70
meters of unique tubing. The
installation is placed in New Yorks
Art District and is open to the public
for free viewing.

Another practitioner of video

installation is Jim Campbell who has
a large portfolio of public arts that
consists of both still images and
objects. Campbell has had many
successful installations in Madrid
within the last few years; his reviews
for the UK solo exhibition suggest,
The art is incredibly touching on a
personal level. Campbell has been
working with electronic lights since
the early 90s however the recent
publications since 2011 have been
the most recognizable commercially
such as his installation Rhythms of
Perception in 2014 that was
showcased at the Museum of Moving
Images in New York City.

Many artists have used technology such as multiple

video casting, special effects and methods of
projection to install video work. Digital incorporation
to art projects have quickly escalated the process of
art application, this means an art installation can be
made in a much shorter time than before. Another way
that technology has changed the process is lighting,
before this it was a lot harder to achieve the desired
mood or atmosphere for installations, however now
lighting has become an underlying factor to the
process of installation. The most important way that
art has changed for this topic however is the
interactive qualities of the exhibitions, the ability to
create art pieces that move, change, adapt, evolve or
interact with their environment is a leap for art
exhibitions and is a expected element to a installation.

Video installations have many types of styles;
installations can revolve around visual galleries,
digital projects, and online-based products; the
concepts are subject to how the artist wants to
present them. During the production of these, any
materials can make the product although most
modern artists portray their work through media
methods. Contemporary illustration installations
are presented through videos and film, sound and
audio, photography and paintings and physical
sculptures. These products are often presented
through a separate medium depending on the
artists intentions such as computers or projectors.

Narrative VS Non-Narrative
In installation art films, a non-narrative
structure does not include a sequenced
storyline that begins has middle and then
concludes or resolves. Most installations
are non-narrative because they are
attempting to create free flowing
appearances with their art pieces. The art
installation of Joseph Beuys often includes
a non-linear structure such as his mixed
media product the earth telephone were
famous for being different to previous
projects of other artists who applied a
linear structure. When the piece has a
narrative structure it will most likely
include a storyline that begins and ends
with a message witch is often subliminal
nevertheless it still has an introduction to
the event or situation with a conclusion
that is solved. An example of this can be
seen in works such as Damien Hurst who
often has a hidden message through their
works with conclusions throughout the
installations.
These ideas relate to my own work
because I will create a narrative structure
in my installation, as I will display
advertisements that resolve. My
installation will also have various
projectors or screens that are
simultaneously displaying videos onto a
backdrop or through desktops. My
installation will also provide objects that
will be displaying audio and physical
objects that appear to be displaying video.

Spacing Of Work

The space where they have created their
installations affects the piece because
artists can use rooms, lighting and scenery
to create atmospheres to either change
the mood of the room or to create a more
expansive experience for the viewers. The
artists can take advantage of the areas
they are showcasing their installations by
creating a physically larger space or
projection for their artwork. The space
they use for their products can be viewed
in different ways from spectators as they
can make their installations more of an
experience. The artists can use space to
create depth in their work and to develop
larger exhibitions to engage and immerse
their viewers more closely to the
installation. An example of how this
method works is when an artist uses
mirrors in a wide and empty room to
develop a sense of greater area when
presenting their exhibitions.

The natures of the audience of the

installations are likely to be older mature
audiences who are patient and interested
in artistic expression. The intended effect
for the response of the audience is for the
viewers to be engaged in the content as
well as respecting the effort of the piece, if
they can achieve this then they will be
able to immerse themselves in the
atmosphere and concepts of the
production that is being showcased.
