Lesson Description
This is an introduction lesson to a larger unit about indigenous relationships with national
governments. Since we are in Canada, the intro lesson will look at a history of Canadian First
Nations. This will include things such as the Indian Act, Idle no more, etc.

What are some of the challenges that Indigenous peoples face when they deal
with National governments?

compare the histories of the interaction between different indigenous peoples and their
national governments (e.g., the Aborigines and the government of Australia, the Manobos
and the government of the Philippines, the Maasi and the government of Tanzania) and
extend the comparison to the Canadian context
Lesson Goals
To give students a better understanding of the history of first nations in Canada. This lesson
will focus on this topic from the perspective of their relation with the government.
