Mushroom Class

9-9:30 Intro and tell us a little about yourselves and what you current knowledge is
and what you desire to learn.
9:30-11 Edible Mushroom identification and how to cook them once you find them.
Powerpoint slideshow, 319 slides. It covers Edible mushrooms and shows a slide or so of
the mushroom(s) then a dish or dishes that are made from them. Talks about where and
when the mushrooms can be found and often mentions poisonous lookalikes. The down
loadable pass out for it has some recipes.

11-12 Poisonous Mushrooms Toxicology talk. Learn the 16 groups of toxins that
are involved in mushroom poisoning and how to avoid getting poisoned.
12-1 Lunch Break
1-2 Morel Mushrooms and their poisonous look-alikes. Morel mushrooms are a very
popular spring edible. Learn how to positively tell them apart from their poisonous
lookalikes, and where and when they can be found.
2-3 Mushroom literature /or Mushroom Photography. Learn how to photograph
mushrooms/ or Fungi on Fungi, /or Ascomycetes/ or Common Mushrooms verses
their similar, rare, overlooked or uncommon counterparts. Class choice.
3-4 Mushroom Cultivation Workshop: Learn how to grow edible mushrooms, we will
be growing oyster mushrooms on a roll of toilet paper. Everyone will get to bring
home their own kit. Or we will be growing oyster mushrooms on cottonseed hulls,
Everyone will get a kit to take home,
Or Bring in your own mushroom log, the log must be have been living within the last
month, learn how to inoculate the log and take it home. Logs usually start
producing mushrooms the second year and continue producing mushrooms for
several years.
Suggested Materials. Pen and notebook. Bring in your mushroom field guide(s) and
any mushrooms from home, in your yard or from the woods that you would like to
learn more about. Some suggested guidebooks for identifying mushrooms will be
shown during class and there will be a few books available for purchase.
Day 2
9-4 Travel to local area in search of mushrooms. Drive your own car. We will be
collecting in the field and bringing mushrooms back to be identified in the classroom
or identifying them on sight where practical. Mushrooms will be put onto display
after they are identified and arranged into groups. Emphasis will be placed on
locating edible species but will also be trying to ID everything that is found.
