Focus Questions
Week 1 chapters 3 and 4
1. My area looks to me like either a grassland or temperate coniferous forest. There
is a lot of grass and dirt around. Also, there are many trees all different types of them.
There are many species of plants and shrubs that could fit into those two types of biomes.
2. In my site I see a lot of interactions between the organisms and the plants such as
the bees 7 pollinating and feeding on the flowers and other plants. Another example is
the trees and the insects by the trees giving the insects many resources. The trees give
them shelter, food, and more. The last example is the relationship between the lizards and
the bushes. The bushes give them a place of shelter and protection.
3. An example of a food chain in my site is the plants use the oxygen, the insects eat
the plants, and birds eat the insects.
Week 2 chapters 5, 6-2, 6-4
1. One example of a mans pollution in my area is the path. It is man-made and cuts
into the natural lans. Another example is the trash that has been left behind in my area. It
is disruptive to the natural surroundings and it can cause different types of damage to the
area.
2. The limiting factors in my area for the insects is there is not very many plants in
the grass that are of much use. It is mostly just weeds. The limiting factors for the animals
like the birds or lizards is that there is not many tree or bushes to be able to use as shelter,
Week 3 Chapters 19, 20 & 21
1. Bacteria is important to the plants to keep them safe from other things that are bad
for them, Bacteria is also important for the animals because it can help them with nutrient
cycling and food digestion. Lastly, it is important for the soil because it can convert to
energy beneficial for the other organisms.
2. In general fungi are found in the grass or on trees or bushes. Their role in the
world is to help trees and plants grow from capturing the water and nutrients for them.
3. I do not because most of my site is dry and not many areas and plants that it could
grow on.
Week 4 Chapter 29
1. The invertebrates that are in my site include bees, butterflies and gnats. The role
for the bees and butterflies is to pollinate the different plants. The role for the gnats are
mainly dealing with waste.
2. They invertebrates are mostly found around the lower level plants and ground.
The gnats are near the waste which is on the ground from the organisms getting rid of it.
The butterflies and bees are mostly in the middle flying through and on the plants. They
land many times on the different pants to pollinate the different flowers, trees, and
bushes.

Week 5 Chapter 22
1. In my site there are no bryophytes, gymnosperms, or seedless vascular plants.
They are all angiosperms. It includes the grass as being a monocot, and the thistle,
daisies, and coyote bush are dicot.
2. The way to identify them was by looking at their leaf shape. They all come to one
end and that is how you are able to tell it is a monocot.
Week 6 Chapters 23 and 24
1. The difference between them is that dermal is the outermost layer that contains
protection and absorption. The ground layer is the next layer that provides storage and
support. The final layer in the inner is the vascular layer that supports and transports.
2. The three most essential nutrients needed in the soil are Nitrogen, Potassium, and
Phosphorus. Nitrogen is important because it helps plants with rapid growth, increasing
seed and fruit production and improving the quality of leaf and forage crops. Potassium is
important because it helps in building of protein, photosynthesis, fruit quality and
reduction of diseases. Phosphorus is important because it helps with the transformation of
solar energy into chemical energy, proper plant maturation, and withstanding stress.
3. There are many different ways of pollination in my area. One way is through the
bees going around to the different species of flowers. Another example is the birds also
going around to all the flowers. Lastly, there is the butterflies that rome around to all the
species of plants.
