Thisdocumentisintendedtooutlinethedesignchoicesmadeintheplanning
ofapotentialappfortheQueenslandPoliceForce.Theintendeduseofthis
appwouldbetoeducatechildrenaboutusingtheInternetsafelyand
appropriately.Theappisintendedtobuildupontheexistingmaterial
suppliedbytheQueenslandPoliceForce,includingcharacters,keywords
andthemesthathavebeendevelopedwithatheaudienceinmind.
Thisdocumentwillexaminetheprojectandgiveacompleteevaluationof
howthedesiredappwouldbedesignedandimplementedtogiveitappealto
awiderangeofchildrenfromasimilaragegroup.Thisdocumentwill
thereforepresentfindingsonhowdesigninganappforchildrendiffersfrom
designingforanolderdemographic.
Thedocumentscontentsareintendedtopresentourfindingsofhowthe
appshouldbedesignedandtojustifythesedesignchoicesandhowtheyare
beingusedtoappealtothetargetdemographic.
1.2.Scopeofthisdocument
Thisdocumentisintendedtojustifythedesignofanapptobedevelopedfor
theQueenslandPoliceForce.
Thisdocumentwillincludeadetaileddescriptionofthereasonwhythisapp
isbeingcreatedandwhattheintendeduseshallbe.Itshallalsoexplorethe
demographicasitstandscurrentlybyidentifyingkeyfeaturesthatare
specificallyusedinothermediatoincentivizeandencourageuseofa
product.Thedocumentwilladdresstheproblemsthatarepresentedinthe
designofthisappandwillproposewaysinwhichtheycanbeovercome.
Theintendedoutcomeofthisprojectwillalsobeconsideredsothatthe

onthecreationofaprototypewillbeshownandwillimplementthefeatures
thathavebeenresearchedfortheproject,suchasdesignchoicesmadeto
appealtoaspecificdemographic.

suchanapp.Thisincludesbutisnotlimitedtoitemssuchasresourcesand
technicalexpertiserequiredfordevelopment,detailsoncreatingor

thesafetyimplicationswhenventuringonline.Thisisalltoleadchildren
downapathwheretheycansafelyusetheinternetwhilediminishing
negativeinfluencessuchascyberbullyingwhilstsimultaneouslyincreasing
theamountofknowledgesothattheycaneventuallyeducateadultsandwe
canexperienceacyber-safeculturetheQueenslandPoliceForcehas
envisioned.Thevaluetotheclientcomesintheformoftheappitselfbeing
abletoconveyitsmessageacrossmultipledifferentplatformsthatincluding
Android,Appleandwindowsphones.Manyyoungerchildrenhaveeasy
accesstothiskindoftechnologyandsincetheQueenslandPoliceForce
wishtogetamessageacrossratherthansimplymakingaprofititiseasierto
accomplishthis;especiallyinthisdayandagethroughthisparticular
medium.Thevaluefortheusercomesintheformofentertainmentand
knowledge,beingabletolearnwhileenjoyingtheappisveryusefulandwill
showgreatresultforbothpartiesinvolved.

FiscaltheFraudFightingFerretCyberSafetyProgramisprimarilyaimed
towardsconveyingitsmessagetoprimaryschoolchildrenagedbetween
5-12yearsold.
Oneactivityusedtoresearchthisparticulartargetaudiencewasthrough
face-to-faceinterviewswithprimaryschoolstudents.Anotherwasthe
researchandanalysisofstatisticaldatagatheredbytheAustralianBureauof
Statistics.Lastly,theanalysisofthemarketofpopularchildrensmobile
applicationshadbeenundertakenforagreaterunderstandingtowhatmay
bepopularapplicationfeaturesamongourtargetaudience.
ByanalysingthedatagatheredthroughtheABSsurveysandothersources
therehavebeennotablestatisticsthatwillbeusedtohelpensureanappeal
amongtheprimaryaudience.
3.1. Audiencebeliefs
Theresearchgatheredshowedthatthoughchildrendidhavesomeinterestin
theideaofthecybersafetyprogram,amajorityofchildrenhavebeenfound
tonotreallycareforsuchaprogram.Howeveritwasfoundthatgirls
demonstratedamuchbetterattitudetowardstheprogramduetomany
youngboystryingtoexemplifyabadboypersonawhichIfoundtobevery
puerile.Whenaskedforthoughtsonparticularmobileappspresentedto
them,itwasfoundthatthisaudiencepreferredchildrensappswithmore
color,interestingimagesandinteractivity.
IntheABSsurvey,SquareEyesandCouchPotatoes(2012)[1],itwas
discoveredthatatleast80%ofbothboysandgirlsaged5-14inAustralia
participatedinwatchingTVorotherscreen-basedactivities(including

mobilesandtheinternet).Thismeansthattheaudiencewillmostlikelybe
usedtoconsumingalargeamountofcontentthroughappsorwebsites.
Anothersourcerevealedthat90%ofchildrenaged5to14yearsaccessed
theInternetinthe12monthspriortoApril2012[2].Inaddition,95%of
children8-11havehadaccesstotheinternetinthepast4weekswith
nearlyeverychildhavingaccesstotheinternetatsomepointoftheirlives[3].
Thismeansthatourappshouldnothaveissuesbeingusedbyourprimary
audienceastheywillmostlikelyhavepriorexperiencewithsimilardesign
concepts.
AsofApril2013,35%ofAustralianchildrenhavemobilephones,anumber
ontheconstantrise[4].Thisbodeswellfortheprogramastherewillbegreat
coverageoftheapplicationbythetargetaudience.
3.2. Audiencelevels
ThePrimaryLevelaudiencebeingtargetedareprimaryschoolchildrenaged
between5-12yearsofage.Thisisbecausethetargetoftheentireprogram
hasbeendirectedtowardsthisagegroupduetotheprogramhavingthe
greatestpredictedrateofsuccesswiththisdemographic.
SecondaryLevelaudiencesareadultssuchasparentsandteacherswhocan
recommendtheapptotheirchildren/studentsthatmakeupourprimary
audience.
Themobileapplicationlookstoconsolidatetheexistingclient-basebutaims
toreachagreaternumberofpotentialclientswithinthattargetgroup.
3.3. Audiencedemographics
Astheuserisexpectedtobebetweentheagesof5and12thisappwillbe
designedprimarilyforstudentswhohavecommencedprimaryeducationand
havenotmovedpastgrade6.Theappmustappealtobothgendersequally
andmustnotshowbiastowardsanyspecificgenderordemographic.Asthe
appisintendedtobeinstallableontheSamsungGalaxyseriesofphones,it
isassumedthatthebasicknowledgerequiredtousethephone(i.e.tapping
thescreentoselect/usesomething)isalreadyavailabletotheprimary
audience.Thisappisnotintendedtodirectlyappealtoculturesand
demographicsthatarelocatedoutsideofQueenslandandthereforethe
contentoftheappshouldnotmakereferencesthatwouldrequire
backgroundknowledgeunavailabletotheprimaryaudience.Theappmust
notusewordsorterminologythattheprimaryaudiencewouldbeunfamiliar
withorthatwouldrequireadditionalresourcestounderstand.
3.4. Audienceexpectations
Itisassumedthatthisappwillbeusedwiththeexpectationofeducation
throughinteractiveorvisualbasedcomponents.Theeasiestwaytoachieve
thisisthroughaconsistentandclearuseofdesignthroughouttheapp,with
clearwaysofnavigatingtheappsmultiplecomponents.

Theappmustalsobeaccommodatingtoallowfortheprimaryusers
(children)undertheexpectationthattheymaynotknowthepurposeofthe
appwheninitiallyopeningtheapp.Thismeansthattheappmustofferclear
visualidentifierswhichcanbeunderstoodquicklyandwithminimalorno
readingrequiredbytheusertoaccesstheeducationalcontent.Toachieve
thiscolourschemesanddesignoftheuserinterfacemustbesimpleand
allowforuserstoquicklyidentifyandholdobviousmeaning.
Astheaudienceisexpectedtobeyoung,itmustbeassumedthattheywill
reactbettertoshortformcontentandfeedbackintensivecomponents.This
meansthattheappshouldeducatemostlythroughthingsthatwillnottakea
largeamountoftimetoconveyanideaandthattheappwillalwaysrespond
toinputfromtheuserwithfeedbackthatwillmakesensetotheuser.
Itisalsoexpectedthatthedifferentcomponentsoftheappshouldalways
feelconsistentindesignandinthewaythattheyreacttouserinput.Theapp
shouldalwaysconveytheideathatitisasingleapplication,andthereforeall
componentsoftheappmustbelogicallyconnectedinthesimplestway
possible.
Whenitcomestoactualapplicationusage,60%ofappsforkidsareinthe
categoryofeducation,with46%ofthatnumberalsobeinginthegame
category[5].Thiscanindicatethatquiteanumberofeducationalappsarein
facthighlyinteractiveasitwillbemoreappealingandenjoyableforyoung
children.

Ourclient,theFraudandCybercrimeUnitoftheQueenslandPoliceService,
isfacingtheproblemofarisingnumberofcasesinvolvingcybercrime.In
responsetothisissue,theclienthasdevelopedtheFiscaltheFraud
FightingFerretCyberSafetyProgramasstatedabove.Thisprogramaimsto
encourageschoolchildrentolearnaboutcybersafety,onlinethreatsand
responsibleonlinebehaviourandtosharethisinformationwiththeirfamilyso
thattheytoocanbenefitfromtheapplication.Wehavebeentaskedwith
developingauserinterfacedesignforamobileappthatprimarilyfocuseson
primaryschoolagedchildrenastheyaretheapplicationsprimaryaudience.
TheQueenslandPoliceForcerequiresthatthedesignbecompletebyFriday,
June5thandincludestheexistingcharactersandartworktheyhave
providedtopresentFiscalsfivetipstohelpprotectyouridentity.This
placesaslighttimeconstraintuponusjoiningthelowbudgetconstraintwe
arealreadyfacing.

5.1. UsabilityObjectives
Ourapplicationwillrequireanextremelyhighlevelofusabilityasitsprimarytarget
audienceareveryyoung;primaryschoolagedchildren.Duetotheexpectedage
oftheprimaryaudiencewemustassumethatthesechildrenonlyhavebasicweb
andmobilenavigationalskillsandsoitmustbeaseasyaspossibletouse.
Successinachievingthiswillbemeasuredbytheeaseinwhichchildrenareable
tonavigatetheapplicationandfindwhattheyarelookingforwithaminimal
amountofeffort.
5.2. Singlemessage
Ifwecanensurethechildrenusingourapprememberonethingitwouldbeto
takethestepsyouneedtoprotectyouridentityonlineandstaycybersafe.
Hopefullytheywillalsorememberthattheycanuseourapptofindoutthe
necessaryprecautionsthatshouldbetakentoachievethismessage.Inorderto
guaranteetheaudiencerespondstothegiveninformation,theywillhaveto
believethatthetipswegivethemcanensuretheirsafety.Wemustmakethem
incontrovertiblytrustFiscalandhisfriendsandbelievetheyknowwhattheyare
talkingabout.Thisway,thechildrendon'tfeelasiftheyneedtofollowthefive
stepsbutinsteadthattheywantto;resultinginafarhigherpercentageof
success.
5.3. Mandatoryelements
Thereareanumberofmandatoryelementstobebuiltintothedesignofthe
application.Amajorityofthesearestraightforwardandareissuedbythe
organisationitself.ThisincludestheQPFlogoaswellastherelevant
informationlinkingthemtothemessageconveyedintheapp.Contact
informationinsituationsofcybercrimeandsuchbehaviouraswellaslinksto
thewebsitearealsonecessaryduetotheirgreatimportance.Another
mandatoryelementisartworkofFiscaltheferretandallthesupporting
charactersasrequestedbytheclient;thesewillbeusedthroughouttheapp

toemphasiseandreinforcethemessage.ThefivetipsofFiscalwillalsobe
whattheappwillrevolveitselfaroundandthuswilltakeonadominatingrole
inmanyscreens.Itismandatorythattheappisappealingtoboththe
parentsandtheirchildren.Itissaidthatparentswouldbetheonesto
downloadtheappforthechildrenandthereforeitsveryimportantthatthe
apphasqualitymaterialandeducationalvalue.Educationalcontentiswhat
drivesparentstodownloadandpurchasespecificapps.Nearly80%ofthose
surveyedbyPBSKIDSreportedthateducationalcontentwassomething
theyconsideredwhenselectinganappfortheirchild.[6]
5.4. Deliverables
OncompletionwewilldelivertotheQueenslandPoliceForceafully
functionalapplicationthatshowcasesanintuitiveandcolourfuluserinterface
designthatmeetstheirstandards.Theapplicationwillcomewithanumber
ofimportantdocumentswhichincludethingssuchasasetofinstructionson
howtoproperlyusetheapp,aswellasmaintainingtheapp.Inadditionto
thosethingsallthesupportingfileswillbegivenincludingimage,videoand
soundfiles.Thisincludesthingssuchascopyrightpapersandother
necessaryformsthatareinvolvedinthemakingofthisapp.
Theunderlyingmessageoftheappwillbetheeducationofchildrenonthe
importanceofcybersafetythroughtheapplicationmediumsubtlyhighlighted
throughthemesandgames.Howthiswillbeaccomplishedisthroughthe
implementationofactivitiesthatwillkeeptheretentionofourselected
audienceinthiscasebeingschoolagedchildrenbetween5-12.Throughthe
useofawidearrayofinteractiveelementsthathouseacartoonstyle,wewill
encouragethechildrentohavefunandhaveavaluablelearningexperience.
