There was a lack of instruction in that

area. We didnt focus on using context
clues to define unknown words.

WE will focus on using context clues to

define unknown words. We will also work
with our groups on strategies to compare
and contrast. We will also be teaching
lessons to help students understand the
meanings of homophones.

My students came in with very little

background in writing, our focus in
the beginning was letter formation,
spacing, and organizing thoughts. We
wanted to encourage our students to
not focus on structure by having
something to write about. Our
curriculum also didn't spend enough
time on mechanics in the beginning
units.

We will intentionally teach mechanics. We

also have editing checklists in their writing
folders to help them work on punctuation
and capitalization. WE will use morning
messages to help our students remember
to use capital letters and commas when
needed and check them as a class.
