This semester you will further develop your use of language as a tool for thinking and learning. We will use
the Holt Elements of Literature and Elements of Language textbooks, as well as various other
supplemental resources. Students will be expected to read and respond critically to an additional
supplemental novel each nine weeks. English Honors students are expected to produce a far greater
volume, complexity, and depth of reading and writing. The curriculum is based on the new Indiana ELA
Academic Standards. Please consult the MCS High School Curriculum Handbook for other expectations
related to this course.

We will focus on the following:

Collections 6-10 in the Literature textVarious elements of reading
comprehension/analysis will be covered within each unit, with quizzes, tests, essays,
and/or other projects serving as assessment tools. The units are made up of fiction and
non-fiction selections. We will begin with a poetry unit, followed by Taming of the Shrew or
Twelfth Night by Shakespeare. You will be able to download these plays from iBooks.
VocabularyThe words will typically come from our reading collections or ACT/SAT word
lists.
In-class novelsWe will read one novel per grading period. We will read Night by Elie
Wiesel the 3rd nine weeks. Tuesdays with Morrie will be our 4th nine weeks novel.
Writing assignmentsJournals, paragraphs, theme analysis essay, literary response,
etc. We will again follow the writing process very closely this semester, and we will write
often. You will be expected to submit rough drafts and participate in a peer and teacher
evaluation at times. All revisions should show evidence of proofreading and editing. I will
help you determine what constitutes a solid piece of writing. The ECA writing rubric will be
used.
Expository Research PaperWe will begin our work on the research paper in March,
and it will be due in early April. Students will be expected to draft a 6-8 page paper with
MLA citations. More information will be sent home regarding this very important
assignment as we get closer to the project.
Language Conventions We will continue to develop the language conventions
mastered from semester I.
Preparation for the Spring ECA exam and monthly STI AssessmentsWe will use
various supplementary materials during the month of April and May to prepare for the ECA
test, which will be given in May.
Journal entriesYou are required to write an entry on the days assigned. Journals need
to be included within your class portfolio, or they may be submitted via Edmodo. Entries
are worth ten points each and are graded on content/effort.
Various in/out of class assignmentsYou are required to complete all work assigned! I
will try to allow a small portion of class time to get started on assignments, unless the
class has been off-track. Point values and content will vary according to the unit/month.
Supplies:

You will need a 1 binder for this class. You will be expected to keep graded
assignments, handouts, notes, journals, etc. in this binder. They will remain in the
classroom and you will receive a grade for having an organized and complete portfolio
(more on this later). Please bring this in as soon as possible.

Paper and writing utensil every day.

Bring your iPad charged and ready for class use on the days we will need it.
Required Apps for the iPadPlease download the following apps as soon as possible, if you
dont already have them installed. I will occasionally add to this list; it is your responsibility to
add them as needed in a timely manner.

Visual Poet
Word Mover
The Poetry App
The Raven (HD)
iBooks
Adobe Reader

Please remember:
This is a discussion based class; in other words, students are required to actively participate
every day. This course is not lecture based. Students will have reading homework almost every
night during novel units. Novels are read at home independently; class time is used to discuss
and analyze the literature. These class discussions are vital to understanding the text and are
only valuable when the reading is completed previous to discussion. Students can expect to have
quizzes throughout each novel unit, as well as in-class writings, essays, tests, homework
assignments, projects, etc.
In addition:
Appropriate dress and language is expected.
No food or drink will be allowed in the room.
Absolutely, positively no cell phones. I will take them.
Be responsible iPad users, and put them away when asked.
Be on time (inside the door when bell begins to ring)or you will go to the Tardy Room.
NO PASSES unless it is a dire emergency.
Sleeping, not working on assignments, working on homework for another class, or
other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
Students are responsible for asking for work missed when absent. No late work
will be accepted unless you have an excused absence from school. Students have the
number of days he/she missed to complete the work. Tests will be made up on the day of
his/her return. If a student is absent on the day an essay/major project is due, he/she is
responsible for delivering a hard copy to the teachers mailbox or emailing the completed
assignment by the time of his/her class period.
All other MCHS rules apply.
