Under Stalin, the Soviet Union was transformed from a peasant

APPROVED Pbs-In 1922, Stalin was appointed to another such post, as General Secretary of

the Communist Party's Central Committee. Stalin understood that "cadres are everything": if you
control the personnel, you control the organization. He shrewdly used his new position to
consolidate power in exactly this way--by controlling all appointments, setting agendas, and
moving around Party staff in such a way that eventually everyone who counted for anything owed
their position to him.

For several years after Stalin took over the Party, he spent time and resources to
ensure complete dominance over the country. He achieved this by having powerful
people near him eliminated...Stalin used force and terror to create the new Soviet state
and drive his plans for the country forward. B using the power of the secret police,
Stalin purged or cleaned his political party, the army and Russian citizens of those he

thought were a threat. By 1940, he eliminated the best and the brightest from the
government and army. This left him in absolute control of the Party and the country.
Unfortunately, as a nation, she would be weakened in a future conflict with Germany.

MOVE After Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin promoted himself as his political heir and
gradually outmanoeuvred his rivals. By the late 1920s, Stalin was effectively the

Question 1: How did DICTATORS NAME improve/take steps to improve the economy?

Starting in the late 1920s, Joseph Stalin launched a series of five-year


plans intended to transform the Soviet Union from a peasant society into
an industrial superpower. His development plan was centered on
government control of the economy and included the forced
collectivization of Soviet agriculture, in which the government took
control of farms. Millions of farmers refused to cooperate with Stalins
orders and were shot or exiled as punishment. The forced
collectivization also led to widespread famine across the Soviet Union
that killed millions.

At a conference of 300 stakhanovite workers held on 17 november 1935 at the
Kremlin,Stalin elaborated on the many advances in the soviet economy as a result of the
five year plans,all of which were now combining to make the life of the average soviet citizen
a much happier one.The famous phrase in which he assured his audience that life has
become better comrades,life has become merrier was a message to the peasantary and
the workforce at large that an end had finally come to food shortages,rationing,and queues.

APPROVED Additionally, Stalin built a cult of personality around himself


in the Soviet Union. Cities were renamed in his honor. Soviet history
books were rewritten to give him a more prominent role in the revolution
and mythologize other aspects of his life. He was the subject of flattering
artwork, literature and music, and his name became part of the Soviet
national anthem. His government also controlled the Soviet media .

Assertion 1 Idea: Stalin involvement in WWII
Question 1: Who did DICTATORS NAME ally himself with at the beginning of WWII? Why?
Stalin took charge of the threat of war.He was not content to sit back and allow his diplomats and
generals to dictate Soviet policy and strategy.Stalin signaled both sides of his interest in an
alliance. In so doing,Stalin secretly pursued an insidious double alliance,one with England and
France against Germany and the other with Germany against England and France.Such a
complex yet potentially risky diplomatic posture appeared to guarantee a victory for the soviets
regardless of which side won.

Question 2: Who did DICTATORS NAMEs ally himself with later on in WWII? Why?
Fortunately for stalin,his decision to sign the non aggression pact with germany
was not held against him by great britain and the other allied powers. This alliance now included
the United States,which had joined the war against germany,japan,and italy after the japanese
attacked pearl harbor,hawaii,on December 7,1941.... Even with modern equiment,the soviet
army was still in dissray.

Question 3: How did the nations involvement in WWII DICTATORS NAME affect the country
as a whole?
The soviets were able to reclaim much of their own territory and turn the tide against the
nazis.With the nazis defeated, stalin was in the eastern europe toward germany.position he
had hoped to be in for several years earlier.Despite the incredible loss of life,he sent his army
across eastern europe toward germany.All the the territory that the soviet army cossed was now
part of the rapidly expanding soviet union.
