February 5, 2015.
Dear Mr. Baird;
I am completing my second year of the Human Services/Therapeutic Recreation Program at NSCC and am
investigating opportunities for my final work placement as a Therapeutic Recreation Assistant. I would like
to secure a placement with Recreation Therapy Services, Mental Health Program at the Abbie J. Lane site.
Over the past two years, I have endeavoured to gain relevant experience in (and an appreciation of) the
Therapeutic Recreation profession. To this end, I have volunteered with Autism Nova Scotia (Ben James
Summer Camp and Autism Arts) and with the Nova Scotia Down Syndrome Society (Team Possibles Art
Collective) and have continued my work with seniors. In addition, I have planned and presented weekly arts
& crafts activities for younger adults with various impairments, at Arborstone Enhanced Care.
I am a mature student with a diverse mix of skills, experiences and accomplishments. I have received
training in both Chair and Laughter Yoga and have also completed the Mental Health First Aid certification.
Presently, I am completing a Mental Health Issues course (NSCC), in order to expand my knowledge.
I have just completed my first Field Placement with Recreation Therapy Services at the Nova Scotia
Rehabilitation Centre (NSRC). I was both inspired and challenged during my short time there and have
made arrangements to continue my association with NSRC as a weekly volunteer.
My experience with Rehabilitation Services has allowed me to appreciate the therapeutic benefits of leisure
and recreation. We helped patients see the ability in their dis-ability by providing opportunities to engage
in a variety of activities: often, an antidote to their daily treatments and physical therapies. Recreation
Therapy programs offered through the Mental Health Program seems to offer patients the opportunity to
experience mental wellness, through participation in the arts, physical activity and community engagement.
I would like to contribute to this journey of recovery.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon. I have attached
copies of my resume and references but should you require additional information, please dont hesitate to
contact me at (902) 477-4760 or via email at W0259856@nscc.ca.
Kindest regards,
Joy Pennick
