May 2015
Shanghai Jiao Tong University Alumni Association at University of Michigan
Prologue
The Dual Degree Academic and Career Development Handbook (referred as this document) is
authored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Alumni Association at the University of Michigan (SJTUAA-UM) to give recommendations on academic arrangement especially course selections for dual degree
students coming from the Joint Institute of UM and SJTU. The document is not to be reproduced or
published without permission from the board of the SJTU-AA-UM.
This document is written by members of the alumni association with the help of dual degree students of
each year. For reference used in the context, permissions have been granted from the original author for
reference only. Reproduce or publishing without the permission of the original author is not permitted.
This document is not an official document produced by University of Michigan or Shanghai Jiao Tong
University. Course selection policies may vary each year and may or may not have been included in this
document. This handbook will be updated annually. The information provided in this document is not
official and the authors do not take responsibility for any mismatch of information due to policy
change. Please use this handbook only for reference.
There links given in this document is color coded into two types as Official Website Links and Unofficial
Website Links. Please use the unofficial website links only for reference. Be careful with official website
links as sometimes they do change to new URLs.
The targeting audience of this document is dual degree students from UM-SJTU-JI. This document
mainly deals with the course selection for junior year and senior year at University of Michigan. However,
sophomore students of JI planning on applying for dual degree program are also recommended to use this
handbook for better arrangement of course selection.
For students reading this document, please refer to the corresponding major combination for
recommendation. Due to the complexity of course selection caused by difference of individual previous
course selection as well as the availability of the course for each college, this handbook cannot and is
therefore not supposed to cover all the situations for course selection. Instead, sample time table for
different major combinations and branch focuses are given as a guideline for common situation.
The structure of the handbook is broken down sections according to major combination. All sections are
further divided into three parts: Credit Arrangement, Useful Tips and Website Reference. For each
major combination, please refer to the corresponding section. Recommended procedure of using of the
handbook goes as the following:
1. Use the Credit Arrangement for general course selection guidelines and examples.
2. Read the Useful Tips section for special tips from previous experience of students.
3. Refer to the Website Reference for official policy and additional unofficial documentation.
Please contact SJTU-AA-UM if you found any problems or difference in policies during the process of
using this handbook. The author group sincerely appreciates your help.
Have fun using this handbook!

1 General Issue
Official Links: In the following chapters, different versions of course selection time tables are given for
different major combinations. These time tables intend to help upcoming dual degree students for course
selection and academic development. Several links to official websites are presented below to enable
better use of this document.
LSA Couse Guide: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/default.aspx
UM College of Engineering Departments: http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/departments/
The time tables presented in this document does not cover all the situations for course selection. Please
use the given links for reference and arrange your own time table depending on your academic objectives.
Early Graduation: Depending on degree combinations, the credit workload for satisfying the graduation
requirement varies significantly. For the purpose of graduation merely, it would be ideal to take more
courses that can satisfy the graduation requirements of both two degrees. For some major combinations, it
is possible to squeeze credits so that one may graduate earlier. This approach can be realized but should
be taken with care since early graduation for working or master school usually means giving up the
degree at SJTU, which is not ideal. In addition, if the student is interested in furthering their study into
graduate school, it is better to take more concentration area related courses than apply for early graduation.
Intellectual Breadth Requirements: Most departments in College of Engineering require students to
take 16 credits of courses in humanity and social science. Among the 16 credits, some departments
require that 4 credits should be taken from ECON101/102, some departments require that at least 3 credits
should be taken from humanity courses and some other departments require that 3 credits should be taken
from 300+ level LSA courses. Students should view the bachelor degree requirement of specific major to
determine course selection.
Regarding credit transfer of intellectual breadth courses, please refer to the JI Transfer Credit Database
given above. In addition, 8 credits of intellectual breadth requirement can be fulfilled by successful
transfer of VY100 and VY200. Combining this with the JI requirement for 14 credits of Intellectual
Breadth courses starting from this year, it is better to take 2 4-credit course at JI that can be transferred to
UM to satisfy the graduation requirement at UM. At UM, for the sake of GPA most of the students will
choose to take intellectual breadth courses as Pass or Fall (P/F) which therefore cannot be transfer back to
JI for JI graduation. However, due to JIs updated policy regarding Intellectual Breadth, some students
may choose to take intellectual breadth courses as graded.
Credit Limit and Pass or Fail (P/F): International students are required to take at least 12 credits each
semester regardless of Graded or (P/F). At most, you can choose 18 credits without paying extra money.
Each UM student can choose to take up to 14 credits of non-major related course as (P/F). Each
semester, one student can choose up to 2 courses (does not limit credits) as (P/F). Courses taken as (P/F)
cannot be transferred back to JI and is usually selected to be intellectual breadth courses.
Course Taken at JI: Dual to the changing schedule of JI course calendar, specific course selection on a
semester base is hard to be determined. However, students are highly encouraged to take one version of
the time table and try to stick to the schedule based on the available courses offered at JI without time
conflict. If a specific version of the time table does not work, students can always change to another
version that is applicable.

2 Credit Transfer
2.1 Credit Transfer Introduction
Credit transfer is a very crucial aspect for JI dual degree students to graduate within four years.
Depending on major combinations, transferable credits vary significantly. In general, EECS branch with
ECE as major at JI or ME related majors such as AE, CEE, NAME with ME as major at JI will have
many transferable course. For majors such as NERS, ChemE and BME, the number of transferable course
is very small and therefore will result in late graduation if not dealt with carefully.
Students will receive a transcript indicating the transferred credit before going to UM. Degree progress at
UM can be checked using the following website or in Wolverine Access.

3 Course Selection
3.1 Time Arrangement and Section Selection
Course selection can be very tricky sometimes especially for the fall semester when dual degree students
just arrived. Here are several useful links for time management and determining which instructor and
section to choose.

3. In case you want to have a different class schedule, I list the classes with heavy workload so that you could
arrange your schedule better: AE205, AE305, AE315,AE405,AE481,AE483. ps: It is just a reference. There is a
student who took 205,305,315 all in one semester and still survived.
4. It is better to make an appointment with your advisor rather than email them. They may ignore your email...
You could make appointments through the AE coordinator.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements
at JI. Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI
requirements and arrange the course schedule accordingly. The changes starting from 2015
include VE401 cannot be transferred to UM, VE301 can be transferred to UM as EECS301,
VE311 has become Program Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14
credits, VG496 needs to be taken for the last semester at JI.

VE215 can be used to satisfy the requirement of CEE230 Energy and Environment/CEE370 Sensors and
Circuits in order to reduce some workload.
VE401 can be used to satisfy the requirement of CEE270 Statistical Methods in order to reduce some
workload (or you will take this course with ME+CEE students in Junior Fall).
Its not necessary to take both VM211 and VM240 in JI, both you are recommended to do so, because
these are pre-courses for most of the civil core courses.
Civil & Environment engineering requires ECON 101 or ECON 102, it can be counted in Intellectual
Breadth, but you still need to take HU and HU/SS 300 level courses.
Some courses only open in Fall/Winter semester. Please ask advisors when you arrive Ann Arbor for
more information.
CEE402 must be taken in the last semester.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.

matter whether they are in the same basket of skills. On the other hand there are recommended paths in
Computer Science Program guide (given in reference). For example, major fields include Computer
Architecture, Theory of Computing, AI, Mobile, Software Engineering, and Game Design.
2.
3.
4.
Take 281 and 370 as early as possible (i.e., Junior Fall. 281 is recommended to be taken at UM, even
if it is offered Summer at JI. Projects here are heavy, but you can learn a lot, especially if you are not
yet an experienced enough programmer). They are prerequisites to almost all CS courses.
EECS482 (whose importance cannot be overestimated for CS, be sure to take it sometime) can be
double counted as upper-level electives at JI. Other than that, theres extra 3-credit upper-level
requirement at JI (EE-prone). Keep it in mind.
VE230 and VE320, both irrelevant to CS but required by JI, can be taken either at JI or UM.
Conventionally VE230 is easier in UM but has lots of labs (and lab reports) throughout the semester,
and VE320 is said to be easier at JI. I dont recommend taking both in the last semester. You wont
feel like taking two courses for which relevant knowledge you have long forgotten.
Get involved in projects. You are a programmer. Think like a programmer.

In addition, take 500 level and above courses. Yes, you are right. They are graduate level courses and I
am not crazy, because they are also the easiest to get A or even A+. Graduate level courses are designed
as a supplement to aid graduate students research, meaning they are not designed to give you a hard time
in exams and homework. It is not uncommon that 70 to 80 percent of students are given the grade A.
Besides, it gives you some taste of what research is like. However, this does not apply to EECS 627/628
which are still a lot of work (thank VLSI).

for graduation. As a result, students are required to take only 7-8 credits for the technical electives
requirements. Hence, it is recommended to follow the NAME schedule shown above.
For elective courses (indicated by color), these courses could be chosen based on interests and
specific schedule for that semester. Schedules do not change much in the same season. To see
specific schedule for previous semesters, click http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/. Start early is key to
succeed in plan your education. One more thing about plan courses, which is different from JI course
selection system, is students can override courses. Students can have time conflicts on their schedule
when they enroll.
Students in NAME program need 16 credits for their Intellectual Breadth (IB). As often the case,
eight of them can be transferred from JI. Before 2009, these transferred credits are from Chinese test.
For 2011, VY100(4) and VY200(4) can be transferred for these eight credits. Hence, for most JI
students, eight more IB credits are required. For NAME, students need at least three HU and 300level
IB
courses.

requirements
for
IB,

http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/academics/undergrad/reqs#intellectualbreadth.
Life can get easier when you choose these courses as pass or fail instead of letter graded.
The undergraduate advisor does NOT recommend NA387, though it is compulsory to graduation.
Hence, take VE401 and transfer credits to UM no matter whether you are ECE or ME at JI!
It is POSSIBLE to finish this dual program in four years without graduation delay even you are not
going back to JI in junior summer. The NAME academic workload is normal in junior year and
heavy in senior year. Hence, plan ECE courses wisely. To see EECS courses workload, click
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/eecs/undergraduate/survey/.
There are generally three major branches in NAME. They are structure, fluid, and control. For topics,
students in NAME will learn about vessels and offshore buildings. To see research topic, click
http://name.engin.umich.edu/research/departments_name_research_research-projects/.
Students from JI can always get awarded with scholarship by their achievement. SUGS program
provides students with sequential graduate school without GRE test. For students who desired to
pursue PhD, NAME is a good choice due to relatively short time. To see PhD statistics, click
https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/academic_information/program_statistics/program.php?id=72.

Sometimes VY 125 (FYWR) and ECON 101 will be open at JI in summer (taught by UM professors).
If so, you should definitely select the courses.
ECON 101 and 102 are prerequisite for Financial Math. At the same time, they can be counted as SS.
Related courses are courses you must take to finish a Math major, and you must take two related
courses from a list that are approved by the advisor.
VY100 and VY200 do not count as distribution credits
They also do not count as FYWR, since FYWR are 8-10 times more intensive than VY200.
No course can be selected to meet FYWR and HU/SS at the same time
The only course is reserved for first year students in Honors program in LSA.
You meet language requirement automatically. You can take a HU/SS course that meet RE
requirement. ULWR can be met by Math 422. QR can be met automatically by courses like Physics
140. NS will be met automatically by courses in Chem/Physics taken in JI.
You can set pass/fail for HU/SS/NS
Since you can set pass/fail for these courses, I highly recommend you to take these courses at UM to
explore your interest. UM offers an amazing list of HU/SS/NS (more than 1000 choice I think).
However, if you want your schedule to be more flexible, I would recommend you to take as many
HU/SS credits as possible in JI.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.
Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI requirements and
arrange the course schedule accordingly. The changes starting from 2015 include VE401 cannot be
transferred to UM, VE301 can be transferred to UM as EECS301, VE311 has become Program
Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14 credits, VG496 needs to be taken
for the last semester at JI.

2. Since its not too much hard for students with ME+AE (if you have taken VK250 and enough
intellectual breadth credit at JI), to optimize the academic resources at University of Michigan, you
are recommended to declare a minor with sufficient preparation. For example, if you want to do
control after graduation, then you can take a CS minor. It really helps when it comes to some
sophisticated projects.
3. According to the junior summer plan, I dont recommend you to find internship at US since it is
nearly impossible. For us, spending time on internship is a waste of time unless you have US green
card or citizenship. SURE program is a better choice, it makes you get closer to your professors and
much easier to obtain their recommendation letter for grad school.
4. Try to join in some organizations such as AIAA to learn the most advanced industrial development of
aerospace. They offer scholarship each year to top students.
5. Try to get involved in American study style, try to make American friends. Anyone among them can
be your potential commercial fellow.
6. Have fun!

30.1.1 Difference
The combination of ME & IOE is hard mode compared with ECE & IOE. The reasons are as follows:
1. JI requires more ME program courses than those of ECE. (VM320 3, VM335 3, VM350 4, VM360
4, VM382 4, VM395 4, VM495 4 and senior design VM450 4, possibly VG496 2)
2. ME administration at UM reserves seats for ME students. Enrollment in an ME course (especially an
ME lab course) needs an override permission from ME administration. Plus, it is hard to select a
suitable time slot for a lab course in this situation.
3. Any two lab courses may not be taken at the same time. (Exception: a. VM350 & VM395 at JI; b.
VM450 & VM495 at JI but you may not take any other course with this combination).
4. Unlike other majors, IOE has little overlap with ME in terms of program courses, which cannot
relieve the burden caused by the previous three facts.

P.S. the schedule has 5 idle credits could be independent study, MATH, STAT, EECS, IOE 5XX, or
possibly ME 495 if slightly adjusted
This version requires hard work and luck to come true. But it is worth doing so by taking full advantage
of the junior summer.
Version 2:
Junior summer at JI.
Take one or some of the junior summer ME courses: VM350, VM395, VM360, VM335, VG496
The rest schedule could then be referred to that of ECE & IOE, which has a wide selection.
This version offers great freedom so that you can select whatever course you like though you may miss
some opportunities in the junior summer.

Take VP390 in JI
VP390 can be transferred to UM as MSE 242, which is a 4-unit core MSE course. VP390 only counts
3 units in JI, when transferred to UM, 1 additional unit in UM technical elective will be needed to
fulfill the 4-unit requirement. Taking VP390 in JI gives you a lot flexibility in UM course choosing.

You must take VM211, VM235, VM240 before you go to UM.
This year JI says that if you want to take VM450 and VM495 together in Senior Summer, you can
only take these two courses then. There are two ways: one is that you take all the other
courses(mainly VM350, VM360, VM335) before Senior summer (go back to JI in Junior Summer or
take them at UM); the other way is that you take ME495 in Senior Winter at UM and put VM335 to
Senior Summer.
It is said to be possible that you do not need to go back to JI in Junior Summer if you arrange the
courses properly, but it means that you will be busier at UM. If you dont want to go back, youd
better takeVM382, VE401 and at least one or two HU/SS courses before going to UM, and you must
take ME350, ME360, ME495/ME335 and the rest credits for HU/SS at UM. However, we dont
know if this way will work, because the time of ME courses may conflict with our NA courses, and
there may not be extra seats for other students.
For students who will go back to JI in Junior Summer, it is more flexible to arrange the
credits. For example, if you dont want to take VE401 in Sophomore Spring, you can take
NA387/Math425 or other equal courses at UM or take VE401 when going back to JI in
Junior Summer.

454 is a 4-credit course in JI, but 3-credit in UM), or you can choose MATH 425 (Probability), also 3
credits, here at UM.

They also do not count as FYWR, since FYWR are 8-10 times more intensive than VY200.
2.
No course can be selected to meet FYWR and HU/SS at the same time
The only course is reserved for first year students in Honors program in LSA.

Skill courses
Since you can set pass/fail for these courses, I highly recommend you to take these courses
at UM to explore your interest. UM offers an amazing list of HU/SS/NS.
7.
ME350 and ME395 have extremely heavy workload. PHY441 has heavy workload. Good
luck. You also need to overload in senior winter. Another choice is taking classes in junior
summer at JI so that you can have more freedom to select other interesting courses at UM.
