Development Handbook

May 2015
Shanghai Jiao Tong University Alumni Association at University of Michigan

Prologue
The Dual Degree Academic and Career Development Handbook (referred as this document) is
authored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Alumni Association at the University of Michigan (SJTUAA-UM) to give recommendations on academic arrangement especially course selections for dual degree
students coming from the Joint Institute of UM and SJTU. The document is not to be reproduced or
published without permission from the board of the SJTU-AA-UM.
This document is written by members of the alumni association with the help of dual degree students of
each year. For reference used in the context, permissions have been granted from the original author for
reference only. Reproduce or publishing without the permission of the original author is not permitted.
This document is not an official document produced by University of Michigan or Shanghai Jiao Tong
University. Course selection policies may vary each year and may or may not have been included in this
document. This handbook will be updated annually. The information provided in this document is not
official and the authors do not take responsibility for any mismatch of information due to policy
change. Please use this handbook only for reference.
There links given in this document is color coded into two types as Official Website Links and Unofficial
Website Links. Please use the unofficial website links only for reference. Be careful with official website
links as sometimes they do change to new URLs.
The targeting audience of this document is dual degree students from UM-SJTU-JI. This document
mainly deals with the course selection for junior year and senior year at University of Michigan. However,
sophomore students of JI planning on applying for dual degree program are also recommended to use this
handbook for better arrangement of course selection.
For students reading this document, please refer to the corresponding major combination for
recommendation. Due to the complexity of course selection caused by difference of individual previous
course selection as well as the availability of the course for each college, this handbook cannot and is
therefore not supposed to cover all the situations for course selection. Instead, sample time table for
different major combinations and branch focuses are given as a guideline for common situation.
The structure of the handbook is broken down sections according to major combination. All sections are
further divided into three parts: Credit Arrangement, Useful Tips and Website Reference. For each
major combination, please refer to the corresponding section. Recommended procedure of using of the
handbook goes as the following:
1. Use the Credit Arrangement for general course selection guidelines and examples.
2. Read the Useful Tips section for special tips from previous experience of students.
3. Refer to the Website Reference for official policy and additional unofficial documentation.
Please contact SJTU-AA-UM if you found any problems or difference in policies during the process of
using this handbook. The author group sincerely appreciates your help.
Have fun using this handbook!

1 General Issue
Official Links: In the following chapters, different versions of course selection time tables are given for
different major combinations. These time tables intend to help upcoming dual degree students for course
selection and academic development. Several links to official websites are presented below to enable
better use of this document.
LSA Couse Guide: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/default.aspx
UM College of Engineering Departments: http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/departments/
The time tables presented in this document does not cover all the situations for course selection. Please
use the given links for reference and arrange your own time table depending on your academic objectives.
Early Graduation: Depending on degree combinations, the credit workload for satisfying the graduation
requirement varies significantly. For the purpose of graduation merely, it would be ideal to take more
courses that can satisfy the graduation requirements of both two degrees. For some major combinations, it
is possible to squeeze credits so that one may graduate earlier. This approach can be realized but should
be taken with care since early graduation for working or master school usually means giving up the
degree at SJTU, which is not ideal. In addition, if the student is interested in furthering their study into
graduate school, it is better to take more concentration area related courses than apply for early graduation.
Intellectual Breadth Requirements: Most departments in College of Engineering require students to
take 16 credits of courses in humanity and social science. Among the 16 credits, some departments
require that 4 credits should be taken from ECON101/102, some departments require that at least 3 credits
should be taken from humanity courses and some other departments require that 3 credits should be taken
from 300+ level LSA courses. Students should view the bachelor degree requirement of specific major to
determine course selection.
Regarding credit transfer of intellectual breadth courses, please refer to the JI Transfer Credit Database
given above. In addition, 8 credits of intellectual breadth requirement can be fulfilled by successful
transfer of VY100 and VY200. Combining this with the JI requirement for 14 credits of Intellectual
Breadth courses starting from this year, it is better to take 2 4-credit course at JI that can be transferred to
UM to satisfy the graduation requirement at UM. At UM, for the sake of GPA most of the students will
choose to take intellectual breadth courses as Pass or Fall (P/F) which therefore cannot be transfer back to
JI for JI graduation. However, due to JIs updated policy regarding Intellectual Breadth, some students
may choose to take intellectual breadth courses as graded.
Credit Limit and Pass or Fail (P/F): International students are required to take at least 12 credits each
semester regardless of Graded or (P/F). At most, you can choose 18 credits without paying extra money.
Each UM student can choose to take up to 14 credits of non-major related course as (P/F). Each
semester, one student can choose up to 2 courses (does not limit credits) as (P/F). Courses taken as (P/F)
cannot be transferred back to JI and is usually selected to be intellectual breadth courses.
Course Taken at JI: Dual to the changing schedule of JI course calendar, specific course selection on a
semester base is hard to be determined. However, students are highly encouraged to take one version of
the time table and try to stick to the schedule based on the available courses offered at JI without time
conflict. If a specific version of the time table does not work, students can always change to another
version that is applicable.

2 Credit Transfer
2.1 Credit Transfer Introduction
Credit transfer is a very crucial aspect for JI dual degree students to graduate within four years.
Depending on major combinations, transferable credits vary significantly. In general, EECS branch with
ECE as major at JI or ME related majors such as AE, CEE, NAME with ME as major at JI will have
many transferable course. For majors such as NERS, ChemE and BME, the number of transferable course
is very small and therefore will result in late graduation if not dealt with carefully.
Students will receive a transcript indicating the transferred credit before going to UM. Degree progress at
UM can be checked using the following website or in Wolverine Access.
Advising Report: https://www.engin.umich.edu/advisingreport/

2.2 List of Transferable Courses

The list of transferable course from SJTU to UM can be found in the given two official links below. It
usually takes a long time for UM to get a specific course taken at JI approved although it will be done
eventually. Please pay special attention to courses that are currently not listed in the database and will
affect your graduation.
Transfer Credit Database: http://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx
JI Transfer Credit Database: http://apps.engin.umich.edu/equivalencies/colleges/show/1710
In general, courses listed in the database can be transferred both ways provided that they are eligible for
transferring.

2.3 Credit Transfer from JI to UM

Credits transferred to UM is labeled T on the transcript representing the transfer status. GPA is not
counted for transferred courses and therefore all JI dual degree students will not have a UM GPA in the
first fall semester. Courses taken at JI must have a letter grade C- (the given letter grade may vary
depending on policy changes for each year) or above to be eligible to be transferred to UM. Plan ahead.

2.4 Credit Transfer from UM to JI

All UM courses taken not as Optional Pass or Fail (P/F) and listed in the database are eligible for
transferring from UM to JI. Please note that all EECS and ME courses are transferred as VE and VM
courses at JI directly. For transferable course from UM to SJTU, please refer to the database excel file
uploaded in the Current Student Tag, under undergraduate education of the Sakai system.

3 Course Selection
3.1 Time Arrangement and Section Selection
Course selection can be very tricky sometimes especially for the fall semester when dual degree students
just arrived. Here are several useful links for time management and determining which instructor and
section to choose.

4.2 Useful Tips

1. VE401 can be used to satisfy the requirement of advanced math in order to reduce some workload.
2. You could choose one of the two classes, AE481(Aircraft Design) and AE483(Space system Design). AE481 is
offered only in Fall, and AE483 is offered only in Winter. You dont want to take any of these two classes with
AE405 together. So if you want take AE483 in Senior Winter, take AE405 in Senior Fall.

3. In case you want to have a different class schedule, I list the classes with heavy workload so that you could
arrange your schedule better: AE205, AE305, AE315,AE405,AE481,AE483. ps: It is just a reference. There is a
student who took 205,305,315 all in one semester and still survived.
4. It is better to make an appointment with your advisor rather than email them. They may ignore your email...
You could make appointments through the AE coordinator.

* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements
at JI. Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI
requirements and arrange the course schedule accordingly. The changes starting from 2015
include VE401 cannot be transferred to UM, VE301 can be transferred to UM as EECS301,
VE311 has become Program Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14
credits, VG496 needs to be taken for the last semester at JI.

5.2 Useful Tips

5.2.1 Take Ve401 and Ve216 During the Spring Semester
If you dont want to have courses in junior summer, please take at least two ECE courses in
spring.

5.2.2 EECS314 May Count as ECE Upper Level Electives

If you choose Space Weather concentration, EECS314 is one of the component courses, and it can be
counted as one upper elective course of ECE.

5.2.3 Technical Elective of AOSS

There are requirement for AOSS technical electives. In the official technical elective course list, not all
EECS course can be transferred, thus you may take some more AOSS courses to fulfill this part. However,
it is possible to discuss with your advisor and transfer EECS courses successfully.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.
Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI requirements and

6.2 Useful Tips

6.2.1 Take Vk250 and Ve401 During the Spring Semester
If you choose to take MSE 250 at U of M instead of Vk250, it may make your course schedule
not very flexible. For those interested in bioelectrical concentration, if you take Ve401 during
the spring semester, you would no longer need to worry about your concentration elective.

6.2.2 Take HU / 300 Level Courses at SJTU

Taking humanity courses in UM is much harder than back in SJTU. If an HU / 300 level course is
available in SJTU with 3 credits or more, taking it will greatly help out your UM degree progress. For
example, VR363 satisfies both conditions and is 3 credits, offered in spring semester.

6.2.3 Some Courses May Count as ECE Upper Level Electives

For example, BME bioelectrical concentrations elective course requires one from EECS451, EECS414,
EECS320 or BME552. If you choose EECS451, then it can also count as an upper level elective course
for your ECE degree. EECS320 is equivalent to Ve320, which means you would not need to take it
during the last semester at JI.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.
Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI requirements and
arrange the course schedule accordingly. The changes starting from 2015 include VE401 cannot be
transferred to UM, VE301 can be transferred to UM as EECS301, VE311 has become Program

This course selection recommendation only works for Civil Engineering! (so many core courses for
civil) Environment engineering has its own core courses, please read sample schedule for Environment
engineering.

16

VE215 can be used to satisfy the requirement of CEE230 Energy and Environment/CEE370 Sensors and
Circuits in order to reduce some workload.
VE401 can be used to satisfy the requirement of CEE270 Statistical Methods in order to reduce some
workload (or you will take this course with ME+CEE students in Junior Fall).
Its not necessary to take both VM211 and VM240 in JI, both you are recommended to do so, because
these are pre-courses for most of the civil core courses.
Civil & Environment engineering requires ECON 101 or ECON 102, it can be counted in Intellectual
Breadth, but you still need to take HU and HU/SS 300 level courses.
Some courses only open in Fall/Winter semester. Please ask advisors when you arrive Ann Arbor for
more information.
CEE402 must be taken in the last semester.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.
Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI requirements and

8.2 Useful Tips

Notice ECE + chemical engineering is a 5-semester program, i.e. you wont graduate until the first
December coming after the senior year. Plan your study properly.
If you have a plan on a PhD program after graduation, its better for you to join a research group no late
than your second semester (Junior Winter). Experience in research gives you additional benefits when
competing with other undergraduates in application.
ECE+ChemE has NO course overlap or double counting. You have to pay more energy on struggling
with these two different majors. However, you will harvest more knowledge from hundreds of nights
working with dues in library.
The CHE courses arrangement are FIXED. However, you are more flexible in determining the semester
in which HU/300+, Chemistry or Biology courses should be taken.
Last but not least, finish your EECS course as soon as possible. You will feel like a nerd when coding
with VHDL as well as ASPEN modelling and writing report painfully on your last semester with CHE
senior design. It gives you no thrill but horror.

Variation Note
1. Sophomore year: For ECE students the courses you take at JI, if different, differ generally in VE230
and humanities. Its not a big deal for CS actually, but I would highly recommend taking at least VE401
before you come.
2. Senior year: One major reason you come to UM for CS is that you have a much greater range of
choices. You should not restrict your interests and imagination here. Study what you are interested in, no
20

matter whether they are in the same basket of skills. On the other hand there are recommended paths in
Computer Science Program guide (given in reference). For example, major fields include Computer
Architecture, Theory of Computing, AI, Mobile, Software Engineering, and Game Design.

9.2 Useful Tips

1.

2.

3.

4.

Take 281 and 370 as early as possible (i.e., Junior Fall. 281 is recommended to be taken at UM, even
if it is offered Summer at JI. Projects here are heavy, but you can learn a lot, especially if you are not
yet an experienced enough programmer). They are prerequisites to almost all CS courses.
EECS482 (whose importance cannot be overestimated for CS, be sure to take it sometime) can be
double counted as upper-level electives at JI. Other than that, theres extra 3-credit upper-level
requirement at JI (EE-prone). Keep it in mind.
VE230 and VE320, both irrelevant to CS but required by JI, can be taken either at JI or UM.
Conventionally VE230 is easier in UM but has lots of labs (and lab reports) throughout the semester,
and VE320 is said to be easier at JI. I dont recommend taking both in the last semester. You wont
feel like taking two courses for which relevant knowledge you have long forgotten.
Get involved in projects. You are a programmer. Think like a programmer.

10.2 Useful Tips

1. Couse Selection
The given time tables are tentatively given as a reference. Actual decisions should be determined by your
preferred advisory track (see below). Detailed information about what courses you can take should please
refer to the CE Program Guide (see below). Ask your academic advisor about the courses you desire to
take.
2. Advisory Tracks
Computer Engineering advisory tracks include Computer Architecture (designing microprocessors),
Computer-Aided Design (using and improving CAD tools), Computer-Based Control Systems (industrial
computerized process controls), Digital Signal and Systems, Embedded Systems, Robotics and Vision,
System Software (designing low-level systems software), VLSI Systems (integrated circuit design). You
can refer to the CE Program Guide to find more details regarding each track.
3. Math Requirement
Math115 can be fulfilled with any Math class found on LSA course guide. Common courses taken by DD
students include MATH 214, 217, 471, 417, 419, 412 etc. EECS 445 can also be used to fulfill Math
requirement, but you will need talk to your advisor about it.
4. Other Tips
Make an appointment with your advisor at the end of every semester to talk about your course
selection for the next semester.
23

See My Academic Requirements under Wolverine Access Student Business Degree Progress to
check your degree progress. Once you have selected your courses, you can also check My Academic
Requirements to see if the courses you selected have fulfilled the requirements as you wish.
The best way to arrange your course schedule is to read the CE program guide and select courses
based on your intended track and your interests, not to simply follow the old schedules from previous
students.
Checkout LSA course guide for HU and MATH classes.
Checkout useful resources on EECS homepage. (Some of them have been listed below.)
Arrange your classes reasonably with appropriate workload (the workload survey below and your
advisor will help you). You need to sleep
Students who enter DD program from winter semester will need to take EECS370 and EECS281
again at UM. These courses have residential requirement, which means they have to be taken at UM.

Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14 credits, VG496 needs to be taken
for the last semester at JI.

11.2 Useful Tips

11.2.1 Major Tracks
The electrical engineering technical courses can be divided into the following categories: (i)
Communication, Signal & Systems; (ii) Circuits & Solid State; (iii) Electromagnetics & Optics; (iv)
Power; (v) Computers. Accordingly, there are eight Major Design Experience courses. Students should
plan MDE choice first and then select courses to fulfill prerequisites. The tentative time table (version 2)
provided above is for students who are interested in VLSI design and computer architecture. These two
tracks are more popular among JI students.

11.2.2 Take EECS 230 at JI or UM

Since EECS 230 is only the pre-requisite of EECS 330 and EECS 411, as long as you do not choose
electromagnetics track, you can either take it at JI or later at UM. The difference is that VE 230 at JI is
more weighted towards theory. The course materials are relatively difficult. In contrary, EECS 230 at UM
emphasizes on experiment. There are six labs and individual reports. VE 240 or VE 260 has covered
many course materials. However, without taking it at JI, you may have to take four technical courses in
one semester at UM and the workload is a little bit heavy.

11.2.3 Try different courses and opportunities

One of the advantages of ECE+EE students is that meeting graduation requirement is not so hard. Since
EECS department provides varieties of courses, it is not necessary to follow a template strictly. Instead,
you can explore different areas to find the one that is suitable for you. In addition, you can also earn
credits through other opportunities. One is Multidisciplinary Design Program from which you can join
company sponsored projects and build your resume. Another possibility is independent study. It is
arranged directly between students and faculty mentors and will give students valuable research
experience.

26

In addition, take 500 level and above courses. Yes, you are right. They are graduate level courses and I
am not crazy, because they are also the easiest to get A or even A+. Graduate level courses are designed
as a supplement to aid graduate students research, meaning they are not designed to give you a hard time
in exams and homework. It is not uncommon that 70 to 80 percent of students are given the grade A.
Besides, it gives you some taste of what research is like. However, this does not apply to EECS 627/628
which are still a lot of work (thank VLSI).

11.2.4 Less is Really More

One of the problems with EE courses is that they are among the hardest the most time-consuming ones in
the CoE. It is not uncommon for new DD students to be over ambitious and try to take four hard EECS
classes at one term. The consequences of doing so are that you will not be able to fully learn the material
well about all four classes. As EE is such a broad major with quite a few tracks, it is always better to find
out which track truly interests you and then stick to that track taking courses related to that track as much
as possible. For example, say you are into VLSI, and you take this advice, then you are most likely to
finish EECS 627, a second term graduate course, by the end of your undergraduate life. At the meantime,
you avoid taking other unrelated course(e.g. signal, devices) so as to focus on VLSI. As a result, you will
know the material about VLSI very well and thus land you at a pretty good internship or graduate school.
This applies to other tracks as well. In a word, find out your own interest and be focus as early as possible.
Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14 credits, VG496 needs to be taken
for the last semester at JI.

As for junior summer, students are supposed to find interns or do research programs. IOE students do not
have to come back to JI for taking extra courses during this time. As for senior year, the courses can be
arranged and managed in a rather flexible way; theres no need to refer to this table exactly. Furthermore
IOE students should come back to JI during Senior Summer for ECE/ME degree graduation.

14.2 Useful Tips

14.2.1 Major Branches
Mechanical Engineering majorly involves control and robotics, design and manufacturing, applied
mechanics fluid, thermal, material, biomechanics, MEMS and so on. Depending on personal interest,
technical elective and specialization elective courses can be chosen accordingly for concentrations. For JI
students with ECE+ME as major combination, control branch will have more course overlap.

14.2.2 Take VM211 + VE215 in Sophomore Fall

Take VM211 and VE215 together in the fall semester of the sophomore year, since these two courses are
sometimes not offered in the summer semester. VM211 is the pre-requisite of a bunch of ME courses,
thus failing to take VM211 at JI will result in having to take two team project based course within the
same semester if not coming back to JI during the summer semester of the junior year. Since VE215 is a
prerequisite of VE216, which is again a prerequisite of VE311, hence it is also highly recommended to
take VE215 in sophomore fall.
33

14.2.3 Take VM211, VM235, VM240, VM250, VM382 at JI

Besides VM211, the other three courses (235 240 250) are also the pre-requisite of many ME courses.
Take these four courses at JI is highly recommended and would be beneficial for further course selection
at UofM. VM382 requires VM211 as prerequisite and is usually offered in Spring semester at JI. If
possible, it is also recommended to take VM382 at JI to reduce workload at UofM.

14.2.4 Schedule ME350, 395, 450, 495 First

To better balance the workload, it is highly recommended not to take any two of ME350, ME395, ME450,
ME495 concurrently in a semester. The workload for the four courses are usually ranked as heavy or
extremely heavy. Note that this is only a recommendation, which means theoretically it is still possible to
take ME350+ME395, or ME350+ME495, or ME450+ME495 in a semester if you have to do so.

14.2.5 Credits Double Count

Specialzation Elective: Due to recent change of ME department policy, a specialization elective is
required for ME graduation. A Specialization Elective is any 3 credit hour course that meets the
requirement of either 1) have a 300-level+ prerequisite, or 2) be any 300-level+ ME course. As a result, it
is possible to take some EECS courses at UofM to fulfill this requirement as well as to transfer back to JI
as upper-level elective. Typical courses are EECS373 and EECS461.
ME461: Currently this course can be transferred back to JI as VE460, which can be counted as upperlevel elective at JI. ME461 requires ME360 as the prerequisite. Note that ME461 is not offered in every
semester.
Advanced Math: Prior to DD program for year 2014 (students who entered JI in 2012), VE401, taken at JI,
can be transferred to UM as EECS401, which fulfills the Advanced Math requirement for ME degree.
However, due to changes to courses EECS301/401 in UM, it is unknown whether this double-count is
still possible for DD program of year 2015 and afterwards. Before further updates are made, please
contact IPO for further information regarding the possibility of double-count between VE401 at JI and
Advanced Math at UofM.
ECON101: Due to recent change of JI policy on humanity courses (14 credits for ECE graduation), it
might be worth considering taking ECON101, a requirement from ME department, as graded so that it
can be transferred back to JI as VF101 (4 credits) to reduce the workload of humanity courses at JI. Most
student find ECON101 an easy course, hence is easier to earn an A compared with other humanity
courses at UofM. Note that for courses taken at UofM, only those taken as graded can be transferred back
to JI.
EECS203: Occasionally, some students might find MATH115 requirement is not satisfied after
transferring credits from SJTU to UM due to some unknown reason; this is the case for DD program of
year 2014. In this situation, if your EECS203 shows up in General Elective column in your transcript,
then there is a possibility to apply for a petition using EECS203 to fulfill MATH115 requirement (just
possible, which means it is not assured). For detailed information, please consult ME Academic Services
Office.

34

14.2.6 Changes to ECE+ME for Year 2015

* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.
Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI requirements and
arrange the course schedule accordingly. The changes starting from 2015 include VE401 cannot be
transferred to UM, VE301 can be transferred to UM as EECS301, VE311 has become Program
Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14 credits, VG496 needs to be taken
for the last semester at JI.

1.

Take VM211 First

Take VM211 in JI since it will be pre-requisite for many courses here.

36

2.

Major Branches
The material science and engineering major involves ceramic, polymer, metal, composite, smart
material and computational material. Depending on personal interest, technical elective and
specialization elective courses can be chosen accordingly for concentrations.

16.2 Useful Tips

1. Version: As for students who intend to acquire dual degrees in both ECE and NAME, several
requirements are fundamental and supposed to be accomplished beforehand. Though mechanical
courses taken at JI will NOT seemingly affect the admission of prospective ECE students, VM211,
VM240 and VM235 are highly recommended by junior year.
2. The schedule for NAME courses is inflexible. Compared to other programs in Michigan Engineering,
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering have a lot of program subjects, which are compulsory
38

3.

4.

5.
6.

7.

8.

9.

for graduation. As a result, students are required to take only 7-8 credits for the technical electives
requirements. Hence, it is recommended to follow the NAME schedule shown above.
For elective courses (indicated by color), these courses could be chosen based on interests and
specific schedule for that semester. Schedules do not change much in the same season. To see
specific schedule for previous semesters, click http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/. Start early is key to
succeed in plan your education. One more thing about plan courses, which is different from JI course
selection system, is students can override courses. Students can have time conflicts on their schedule
when they enroll.
Students in NAME program need 16 credits for their Intellectual Breadth (IB). As often the case,
eight of them can be transferred from JI. Before 2009, these transferred credits are from Chinese test.
For 2011, VY100(4) and VY200(4) can be transferred for these eight credits. Hence, for most JI
students, eight more IB credits are required. For NAME, students need at least three HU and 300level
IB
courses.
To
see
more
info
about
requirements
for
IB,
click
http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/academics/undergrad/reqs#intellectualbreadth.
Life can get easier when you choose these courses as pass or fail instead of letter graded.
The undergraduate advisor does NOT recommend NA387, though it is compulsory to graduation.
Hence, take VE401 and transfer credits to UM no matter whether you are ECE or ME at JI!
It is POSSIBLE to finish this dual program in four years without graduation delay even you are not
going back to JI in junior summer. The NAME academic workload is normal in junior year and
heavy in senior year. Hence, plan ECE courses wisely. To see EECS courses workload, click
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/eecs/undergraduate/survey/.
There are generally three major branches in NAME. They are structure, fluid, and control. For topics,
students in NAME will learn about vessels and offshore buildings. To see research topic, click
http://name.engin.umich.edu/research/departments_name_research_research-projects/.
Students from JI can always get awarded with scholarship by their achievement. SUGS program
provides students with sequential graduate school without GRE test. For students who desired to
pursue PhD, NAME is a good choice due to relatively short time. To see PhD statistics, click

18 ECE+EnvEngr Course Selection Recommendation

18.1 Specifications for New Major
Environmental Engineering is one degree option offered by College of Civil and Environmental (CEE).
This is a new degree offered by the college in September 2013. Before, it is a branch in civil degree but
many aspects are different.
It is NOT RECOMMENDED to choose this degree as a means to get admission to any other degrees.
This degree requires a lowest GPA as 3.2 and provides great risk if any attempt of adjust degree is failed.
Please be thoughtful when making the choice. ECE students are NOT recommended to choose this degree.
(See Useful Tip 2.)
ME students, somehow, has better foundation of choosing this degree, because environmental engineering,
like civil engineering, has many things related to mechanics and fluids. BUT the courses that can be taken
in JI are very limited, and a student is very likely to have to extend their stay in University of Michigan as
an undergraduate student.
Currently, there is no student from JI that has finished a degree in Environmental Engineering. We are
sorry that there exists no such thing as course arrangement or time table plan. However, please do look at
the tips and recommended websites in the latter part, they should be helpful.

18.2 Useful Tips

1. ECON 101 or 102 is required. Do take them if ECON 101 is offered in summer semester when UM
scholars come.
2. For a ECE student, there is not a single course that can be counted toward any category that helped
him/her complete a degree in EnvEng as all the courses, except the common requirement courses (like
math, chemistry and physics), can only be counted as general electives. Therefore you will never
manage to finish your degree in 2 years.
3. ME students please finish VM240 and contact the program advisor of EnvEng about whether VM240
can be a course equivalent of CEE 211, statics and dynamics. If yes, then it will be better than ever.
4. Mind there is fluid mechanics in both ME and EnvEng, VM320 and CEE 325. Please again contact
with the program advisor of EnvEng for course equivalence information. If they can be equal, better
take it at JI as well.
5. The contact of the current program advisor of EnvEng is:
Dr. Terese M. Olson: tmolson@umich.edu
She is a kind but very serious lady with a very busy schedule. Contact her if you indent to take the
degree. If NOT better dont bother her too much. You can ask her anything about course election and
she will give you the most authorized answer. DONT HEASITATE if you do have questions.

18.3.2 Useful Documentation

Here is an excerpt from a mail sent by Dr. Olson:
Essentially I tell students that environmental engineers need to have a wide interest in the sciences math, chemistry, physics, and microbiology in particular. You will note that our curriculum requires a
semester for example of organic chemistry, environmental microbiology, and environmental (aquatic)
chemistry. The primary employment area for environmental engineers in the US are what we call
consulting companies. These are firms that are hired by other companies or utilities to design solutions for
environmental projects. These projects for example may involve processes for water purification,
remediation of contaminated environments, sanitation systems, energy recovery from waste treatment
systems, just to name a few examples. There is also a strong link in our program to water resource
management and environmental engineering, so you'll see we require some coursework in hydrology.
We hope that you will find the word encouraging and helpful.

Do not take VE230 at JI

Because physics 405 can double count as VE230.
VY100 and VY200 do not count as distribution credits
They also do not count as FYWR, since FYWR are 8-10 times more intensive than VY200.
No course can be selected to meet FYWR and HU/SS at the same time
The only course is reserved for first year students in Honors program in LSA.
Math class can count as 3 distribution credits
For example, VV256/286. They can count towards 30 credits of distribution.
Chem class can count as 5 distribution credits
VC210/211. They can count towards 30 credits of distribution.
Skill courses
You meet language requirement automatically. You can take a HU/SS course that meet RE
requirement. ULWR can be met by PY441. QR can be met automatically by courses like Physics 351.
You can set pass/fail for HU/SS/NS
Since you can set pass/fail for these courses, I highly recommend you to take these courses at UM to
explore your interest. UM offers an amazing list of HU/SS/NS (more than 1000 choice I think).

Sometimes VY 125 (FYWR) and ECON 101 will be open at JI in summer (taught by UM professors).
If so, you should definitely select the courses.
ECON 101 and 102 are prerequisite for Financial Math. At the same time, they can be counted as SS.
Related courses are courses you must take to finish a Math major, and you must take two related
courses from a list that are approved by the advisor.
VY100 and VY200 do not count as distribution credits
They also do not count as FYWR, since FYWR are 8-10 times more intensive than VY200.
No course can be selected to meet FYWR and HU/SS at the same time
The only course is reserved for first year students in Honors program in LSA.
You meet language requirement automatically. You can take a HU/SS course that meet RE
requirement. ULWR can be met by Math 422. QR can be met automatically by courses like Physics
140. NS will be met automatically by courses in Chem/Physics taken in JI.
You can set pass/fail for HU/SS/NS
Since you can set pass/fail for these courses, I highly recommend you to take these courses at UM to
explore your interest. UM offers an amazing list of HU/SS/NS (more than 1000 choice I think).
However, if you want your schedule to be more flexible, I would recommend you to take as many
HU/SS credits as possible in JI.

21.2.1 Useful Tips
1. Independent Study is fairly important for AE students due to the particularity of our major. It is a
great opportunity to know different professors and help you really understand what Aerospace
Engineering is.

47

2. Since its not too much hard for students with ME+AE (if you have taken VK250 and enough
intellectual breadth credit at JI), to optimize the academic resources at University of Michigan, you
are recommended to declare a minor with sufficient preparation. For example, if you want to do
control after graduation, then you can take a CS minor. It really helps when it comes to some
sophisticated projects.
3. According to the junior summer plan, I dont recommend you to find internship at US since it is
nearly impossible. For us, spending time on internship is a waste of time unless you have US green
card or citizenship. SURE program is a better choice, it makes you get closer to your professors and
much easier to obtain their recommendation letter for grad school.
4. Try to join in some organizations such as AIAA to learn the most advanced industrial development of
aerospace. They offer scholarship each year to top students.
5. Try to get involved in American study style, try to make American friends. Anyone among them can
be your potential commercial fellow.
6. Have fun!

23.2 Useful Tips

23.2.1 Take Vk250 and Vm382 During the Spring Semester
If you choose to take MSE 250 and Vm382 at U of M, it may make your course schedule not
very flexible. These two courses are strongly recommend to be taken in the spring semester in
the second year.
50

23.2.2 Some Replacement and Pre-requisite

VM320 (Fluid Mechanics) can be replaced by ME320. ME320 can also replace BME331. So you only
need to take ME320 to fulfill both JI and UM requirement.
BME231 is a course pretty similar to Vm211+Vm240. Unfortunately, this course cannot be replaced. But
you can get an A+ easily in this course if you have already taken 211+240.
BME332 is the pre-requisite of BME456. Please take this course as early as possible.
JI requires advanced math and we also need a math course in BME degree. MATH 371 is strongly
recommended to fulfill these two requirements. This course can be taken in junior Fall. IMPORTANT:
Ve401 CANNOT satisfy the math course requirement in BME department!
VM495 can be replaced by BME458.
If you want to take IOE333, please take BME241 in advance.
Biochemistry course is strongly recommended to be taken in the last semester. This course is pretty
hard and might affect your GPA.

23.2.3 About the First Summer

I am sorry to tell you guys that if you choose ME+BME, you might have to go back to JI to take VM395
since this course is the pre-requisite of VM450. However, if you can take VM395, VM350 and VM360 in
UM, you do not need to go back to JI twice. But this might make your semesters very busy.
* Due to policy change at JI from 2015, the time table might not include the new requirements at JI.
Please refer to DD course requirement under IPO tag on Sakai for detailed JI requirements and
arrange the course schedule accordingly. The changes starting from 2015 include VE401 cannot be

26.2 Useful Tips

1. Instead of struggling on how to complete ME+CS degrees, figure out and keep in mind why you take
ME+CS!
2. Usually VM450 and VM495 are not allowed to be taken at the same semester. Be prepared.
3. It might be difficult to select ME350 and ME395 Junior Fall. But if you do, take one of them to
separate workload.

30 ME+IOE Course Selection Recommendation

30.1 Credit Arrangement
The notation used in this section is shown below.
IOE graduation
ME graduation

IOE bachelor degree at UM

ME bachelor degree at JI
Table 30-1: Notation

30.1.1 Difference
The combination of ME & IOE is hard mode compared with ECE & IOE. The reasons are as follows:
1. JI requires more ME program courses than those of ECE. (VM320 3, VM335 3, VM350 4, VM360
4, VM382 4, VM395 4, VM495 4 and senior design VM450 4, possibly VG496 2)
2. ME administration at UM reserves seats for ME students. Enrollment in an ME course (especially an
ME lab course) needs an override permission from ME administration. Plus, it is hard to select a
suitable time slot for a lab course in this situation.
3. Any two lab courses may not be taken at the same time. (Exception: a. VM350 & VM395 at JI; b.
VM450 & VM495 at JI but you may not take any other course with this combination).
4. Unlike other majors, IOE has little overlap with ME in terms of program courses, which cannot
relieve the burden caused by the previous three facts.

30.1.2 Main assumption:

1. VV214 (MATH 214) and VE301/401 (IOE 265) have been taken. (Prerequisites of IOE core courses;
strongly recommended at JI)
2. VM: 211, 235, 240, 250 have been taken.
3. Lack HU/300+
4. Lack one of VE215 or VM382

P.S. the schedule has 5 idle credits could be independent study, MATH, STAT, EECS, IOE 5XX, or
possibly ME 495 if slightly adjusted
This version requires hard work and luck to come true. But it is worth doing so by taking full advantage
of the junior summer.
Version 2:
Junior summer at JI.
Take one or some of the junior summer ME courses: VM350, VM395, VM360, VM335, VG496
The rest schedule could then be referred to that of ECE & IOE, which has a wide selection.
This version offers great freedom so that you can select whatever course you like though you may miss
some opportunities in the junior summer.

31.2 Useful Tips

1.

Take VK250 and VM 382 in JI

Technically, spring in JI is kind of lazy; it will be helpful and release your study in UM a lot if you
take VK250 and VM382 in JI sophomore in advance. Personally the writer recommends student to
take VK250 (MSE250) in MSE department, since the teacher in MSE department does a pretty better
job in teaching this course and this course lays important foundation for your study in MSE
department
63

2.

Take VP390 in JI
VP390 can be transferred to UM as MSE 242, which is a 4-unit core MSE course. VP390 only counts
3 units in JI, when transferred to UM, 1 additional unit in UM technical elective will be needed to
fulfill the 4-unit requirement. Taking VP390 in JI gives you a lot flexibility in UM course choosing.

3.

Better not select MSE489 and ME350 in a same term.

MSE 489 is a senior design course, which has a huge workload. At the same time, ME350 is a ME
design course similar to ME250 and VG100. Hence its better to avoid selecting this two courses at
the same time, especially its a graduate school application term in Senior Fall.

4.

Mandatary additional 400+ level mathematics course

A mandatary additional 400+ level mathematics course will be needed in UM because the math
courses units transferred from JI are not enough for UM requirements. For this course, Math 425 is
recommended, equivalent to VE401.

5.

Major Branches
The material science and engineering major involves ceramic, polymer, metal, composite, smart
material and computational material. Depending on personal interest, technical elective and
specialization elective courses can be chosen accordingly for concentrations.

6.

Credit Double Count

Due to ME department policy, namely, specialization elective, several MSE courses can be taken as
specialization elective to meet both the graduation requirement of ME and Upper-Level Technical
Elective. Typical courses are: MSE420~VM382; MSE 335 ~ VM335; MSE360 ~ VM395; MSE365
~ VM495; MSE480&MSE489 ~ VE496; MSE250 ~ VK250; MSE242 ~ 390(JI); VM211 ~ ME211.

7.

If you are considering MSE+ME major + CS minor

Due to large selection space for MSE_ME major course selection, its possible and in fact not that
difficult for MSE+ME students to have a CS minor. Take any of VE203, VE280 when you are in JI
will help you a lot, then you only need to take EECS 281 and one UPLC to get a CS minor.

Subject for ECE students, Intellectual Breadth has increased to 14 credits, VG496 needs to be taken
for the last semester at JI.

b) NA491+NA492 VM395
c) NA387VE401
You must take VM211, VM235, VM240 before you go to UM.
This year JI says that if you want to take VM450 and VM495 together in Senior Summer, you can
only take these two courses then. There are two ways: one is that you take all the other
courses(mainly VM350, VM360, VM335) before Senior summer (go back to JI in Junior Summer or
take them at UM); the other way is that you take ME495 in Senior Winter at UM and put VM335 to
Senior Summer.
It is said to be possible that you do not need to go back to JI in Junior Summer if you arrange the
courses properly, but it means that you will be busier at UM. If you dont want to go back, youd
better takeVM382, VE401 and at least one or two HU/SS courses before going to UM, and you must
take ME350, ME360, ME495/ME335 and the rest credits for HU/SS at UM. However, we dont
know if this way will work, because the time of ME courses may conflict with our NA courses, and
there may not be extra seats for other students.

For students who will go back to JI in Junior Summer, it is more flexible to arrange the
credits. For example, if you dont want to take VE401 in Sophomore Spring, you can take
NA387/Math425 or other equal courses at UM or take VE401 when going back to JI in
Junior Summer.

33.2 Useful Tips

33.2.1 No Longer Need Advanced Math Courses at Nuclear
Nuclear program will not require advanced mathematics any longer, however, NERS 320 (Mathematical
Method in Nuclear Engineering) has been changed from 3 credits to 4 credits, covering some materials in
differential equations - boundary conditions. For ME students, you can select VE401 in JI, (VV/MATH

68

454 is a 4-credit course in JI, but 3-credit in UM), or you can choose MATH 425 (Probability), also 3
credits, here at UM.

33.2.2 New Fluid Class

I chose to take ME 320 (Fluid Dynamics) at Junior Fall, but nuclear department will also offer own fluid
class (NERS 344) at Junior Winter. Successfully, nuclear department has accepted the ME 320. NERS
344 has been refused by JI.

33.2.3 Independent Study Counted as Elective

Every department here at UM will require faculties to offer independent study course, i.e., research
chances like PRP and IPP at SJTU. If you are thinking to apply graduate study later, it is a great
opportunity for you to get in touch with professors and think over your future plan. You can schedule an
appointment with your professors and plan for a talk. Independent Study can count for 3 credits at most,
and can be used for NERS elective. So, you can just choose two electives at Senior Fall, leaving 3 credits
free for Senior Winter. If later, you don't lack credit, you can also apply Independent study with salary.
The only thing you should notice is that you should email professors as early as possible, and before you
talk with professors, you should be prepared with all their research topics. These information is available
on the department website.

35.2 Useful Tips

1.

VY100 and VY200 do not count as distribution credits

They also do not count as FYWR, since FYWR are 8-10 times more intensive than VY200.
2.

No course can be selected to meet FYWR and HU/SS at the same time

The only course is reserved for first year students in Honors program in LSA.
3.

Math class can count as 3 distribution credits

For example, VV256/286. They can count towards 30 credits of distribution.

4.

Chem class can count as 5 distribution credits

5.

Skill courses

VC210/211. They can count towards 30 credits of distribution.

You meet language requirement automatically. You can take a HU/SS course that meet RE
requirement. ULWR can be met by PY441. QR can be met automatically by courses like
Physics
6.

You can set pass/fail for HU/SS/NS

Since you can set pass/fail for these courses, I highly recommend you to take these courses
at UM to explore your interest. UM offers an amazing list of HU/SS/NS.
7.

Senior year will be hard

ME350 and ME395 have extremely heavy workload. PHY441 has heavy workload. Good
luck. You also need to overload in senior winter. Another choice is taking classes in junior
summer at JI so that you can have more freedom to select other interesting courses at UM.

Appendix A UM Academic Resources

Appendix A.1 Academic Program
Appendix A.1.1 Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP)
Official Website: http://mdp.engin.umich.edu/
General Introduction:
The Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP) brings students of different majors together to design and
manufacture prototypes that require the combination of different engineering and business branches.
Projects of MDP are usually provided by companies cooperating with University of Michigan. Once
enrolled, students are required to take at least two-semester MDP class in a roll with at least 7 credits in
total. You may be also provided with chances to work as a summer intern in the company which sponsors
your team. You can get a MD Minor with a multi-term MDP project in addition to other requirement.
Also, most of MDP projects will be pre-approved as a Major Design Experience class. Typical
application time for MDP is around the beginning of October when a project fair of MDP is usually held
on campus to attract students. In general, MDP is good for students with additional credits for courses and
are not planning for early graduation. You can have a real-world design experience in this program.
Please drop by the project fair for MDP to take a look if time permits.

Appendix A.1.2 Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering (SURE)

Official Website: http://sure.engin.umich.edu/
General Introduction:
The Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering (SURE) is a summer research internship program
for undergraduate students above junior level. The project requires a twelve week commitment during the
summer break with a faculty advisor for the project signed up for. Depending on each year, a stipend
around $4000 will be given to the participants. In general, SURE is an ideal option for students planning
on attending graduate school and want to have research experience in advance.

Appendix A.2 Library & Academic Workshop

University of Michigan has a well-established library system and many free general workshops for
techniques that may or may not be taught in class. Students can find time and location for events online
and attend the workshops. Some resources can be found below.

Appendix B Undergraduate Research Assistant

Appendix B.1 Finding a Research
In general, undergraduate students conduct research supervised by a faculty member. There is no standard
way of finding a research apart from standard projects provided by the University such as SURE.
However, several tips listed below may be useful for finding a research project as an undergraduate
student.
1. Table out your own interested research area and do background research in advance
2. Spend time searching for all the faculty members of your department and find their area of specialty.
Use this website resource for reference: http://www.experts.umich.edu/
3. Do not be shy to go to the office hour faculties and please make full use of office hours of faculties
that you are interested in working with.
4. Amaze your current course instructors by your outstanding performance, go to their office hours
regularly and ask meaningful questions.
5. Seize every opportunity you have even if it is just an email from some faculty looking for
undergraduate students.

Appendix B.2 Credit Based Research

Taking a research project for credit is similar to PRP/IPP at SJTU. Students can earn credit by doing
research and count those credits for graduation. Details for category of the credit depend on the specific
credit arrangement of each major department. Please refer to the course list of each department for
detailed information.
