Circulatory System

You better pay

attention
Because there will be a quick quiz at the end...

Your Heart

Your heart
Your heart is constantly
beating, it never stops even
when you are asleep. The
heart can beat to pump
blood millions of times. With
each beat, the heart muscle
contracts and pushes the
blood out into the arteries.
Then, the heart muscle
relaxes and more blood
pours slowly
into the heart from the

Two Hearts in One

Your heart is really 2
pumps, side by side. The
right pump sends stale
blood to the lungs for more
oxygen. This blood comes
back to the left pump,
which sends it around your
body to spread more
oxygen. Flaps, called
valves, make sure the blood
flows the correct way.

The Heart Around the Body

The heart is inside the
bodys chest, between
the 2 lungs. It is
slightly to the left
side.

Tubes for Blood

Blood flows through your
body in vessels. They are
different sizes and do
different jobs. For example
arteries carry blood away
from the heart, veins carry
blood to the heart, and
capillaries link the artery
and veins.

Your Blood

Your blood
As blood flows around your
body, it is constantly working
to feed, clean, and supply
oxygen. The nutrients from
food are carried by blood to
feed your body cells, and all
the waste products are
carried away by blood to
keep the cells clean. Blood
carries oxygen to every part
of your body.

Whats in Blood
Blood has 4 main parts plasma, red cells, white cells,
and platelets. Plasma is a
pale yellow liquid, that
contains many different
substances that you need for
energy and growth. Tiny red
cells carry oxygen. White
cells fight germs and clean
the blood. Platelets help
blood to clot.

Where Blood is Made

New blood is made mainly
in the soft jelly-like marrow
inside certain bones. Tiny
blood vessels passing
through the bone carry
away the new blood cells.

Oxygen and Blood

Oxygen and blood travel through veins.
The blue veins carry oxygen. The red
veins carry blood. As you see in our
human
body picture, there is an even
amount of blood and oxygen
veins to keep the body stable.

Circulatory System
The Circulatory System removes waste
from the body. It also helps when you
have bacteria and viruses. The
Circulatory System sends fighters to
help you fight off your sickness. It also
carries chemical messengers which carry
instructions from one part of the body to
another part of the body.

Oxygen in the Circulatory

System
In the Circulatory System, the oxygen
combines with food to make energy.

Definitions
*Circulatory System- Used to deliver
messages, food, oxygen, and blood.
*Heart- A hollow muscular organ system
that sends blood through the body.
*Blood- The red liquid that travels
through the arteries and veins, carrying
oxygen and carbon dioxide.

4-2

System
This system starts
at the heart and ends back
up at the heart. The heart
only rests only between
beats.

The human heart is no bigger than

your fist

Atrium
*Inside of the atrium is a swirling dark sea of blood
*Both the right and left atriums are a collecting chamber
for blood returning to the heart

Ventricle
*The valve opens to allow blood to ge from the upper
chamber to the lower chamber
*You feel the power of a heartbeat as the ventricle
contracts and blood is forced out of the heart through a
large vessel

4-3

Plasma
*Plasma: the colorless or pale yellow fluid part of
blood in which corpuscles or fat globules are
suspended
*90% of water is plasma
*Plasma carries salts and enzymes
*The primary purpose is to transport nutrients,
hormones, and proteins around the body
*More than 1/2 of your blood is plasma, about 55%

In the Circulatory System, blood moves

from the heart to the lungs and back to
the heart. Blood then travels to all the
cells of the body and returns again to the
heart to start the process again.

Facts
*About 5 liters of blood is pumped
through your body per minute.
*The most numerous blood cells in your
body are the red blood cells.

Fun Facts
About the Circulatory System

1.The Circulatory System is

extremely long. In an adult's
body if you laid out all the veins,
arteries and capillaries, it would
add up (end to end) to be
60,000 miles! Thats enough to
circle the earth twice.

2. People who are not in shape

tend to have faster heart rates.
People that are athletes tend to
have slower heart rates.

3. Did you know a heart doesn't

need a body to survive?

4. It takes 10-20 seconds for blood

to travel around your body.

5. The heart is made of muscles.

And it is the only part of your body
that doesn't have to think about
working.

6. The Circulatory System is also

known as the blood distribution
network.
