A. Personal Statement

By the time kids start school, they may have a source of pain in their mouths distracting them from learning or,
worse, keeping them home from school. I would like to decrease the incidence and prevalence of early
childhood caries at this vulnerable age by expanding community-based programs to educate and provide
children in underserved populations with access to dental care. My desire to expand access to dental care to
these children stems from my experience volunteering with community-based programs, my clinical experience
in private practice, and the faculty at University of the Pacific. With the current studies and collaborative
research occurring at University of California, San Francisco, I believe that a Masters of Science in Dental
Hygiene will arm me with the tools, guidance, and experience to expand access to dental care to all children.
Furthermore, with the passing of the Affordable Care Act, there will be a movement to make dental care a
priority in overall well-being. Given that movement, there will be a concurrent demand for policy makers who
also have technical and clinical experience. I hope to be part of that movement as it aligns with my goal of
expanding access to dental care to all children.
