What is

PCMH?

Childrens Mental Health is

Everyones Business
It is estimated that 1 in 5 children have a diagnosable
mental illness. In Ontario alone, an estimated
656,000 families are dealing with the unique
challenges and struggles of raising children and
youth with mental illnesses, and mental health
disorders. There is a growing burden on the Ontario
economy resulting from the lack of equitable care
toward prevention and intervention in children and
youth mental health compared to children and youth
physical health. Suicide is currently the leading
cause of non-accidental death among children and
youth in Ontario, claiming the lives of our children
and youth more than any physical illness. It is our
commitment to our children and youth as Ontarians
to provide a voice for these young people so they
no longer must suffer in silence. We will continue
to contribute to and influence positive change to
balance care for those with a mental illness, and see
a decrease in lives lost.

PCMH is the only Provincial, family-led, nonprofit organization that provides a voice for
families who face the challenges of child and
youth mental health issues. PCMH provides
support, education, and empowerment by linking
networks of families, communities, agencies and
government. PCMH believes in the promotion
of family-centred principles of care. PCMH
envisions a future in which children and youth
with mental illness enjoy a high quality of life
in welcoming and supportive communities.
Like the elephant, PCMH takes great care and
responsibility for our children and youth, and
is a symbol of strength, honour, stability and
patience, all attributes and traits of families who
are raising children and youth with mental
health disorders and mental illness.
Our unique logo is demonstrative
of the dedication of PCMH to
bring the elephant in the
room to conversations and
the dedication to ensuring
that child and youth
mental illness is something
that is talked about,
addressed, and treated.

About Our Families

About Our Children

Our Goals

Family is all-inclusive. Families can be from

all incomes, education, racial, ethnic, and
religious backgrounds. They can be single
parent or two parent families. They can
be birth parents, foster parents, adoptive
parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents.
They all need help, they all need support,
and they all need tools to cope. PCMH offers
peer support groups for families, and tools
and strategies to help families best deal with
their journey through the child and youth
mental health system, as well as the unique
challenges and struggles they face. Working
together and supporting each other makes
us more effective in helping our children.
Together we can challenge the stigmatization
of mental illness, get the information we
need, access services that are truly
supportive, and build communities that
are welcoming for our children.

Having a child with a mental health disorder or mental

illness can be confusing and overwhelming. As families,
we need information so that we can make decisions
that are best for our children and youth. The causes
of mental health disorders and illness can vary from
child to child. Research-based knowledge suggests
that biological, social, psychological and environmental
factors are all important. There are a wide range of
therapeutic, educational, and social services that are
essential to addressing the needs of our children and
youth with mental illness and mental health disorders.
PCMH provides online resources that offer accurate
and relevant information about child and youth mental
health and the services available. PCMH provides
public presentations to agencies, educators, and
communities about the family perspective and what
is needed to allow our children, youth, and families to
achieve success. PCMH provides opportunities for our
family members to attend conferences, workshops,
and events that will help increase their capacity to
cope, and provide support.

PCMH and its members strive to advance

the awareness and knowledge of the unique
needs of children and youth with mental
health diagnoses as well as their families.
We work actively to dissolve the stigma
attached to children and youth mental
illness. We encourage and recommend
research, prevention, early intervention,
family support, and family-centred and
family-driven care. We meaningfully engage
and work with agencies and government to
ensure that children and youth with these
unique needs and struggles have access
to community-based services that will
help them reach their full potential. We
are dedicated to ensuring that children,
youth, and their families have access to all
the mental health services and community
supports they need.
