Description:Atthecookiesheetliteracycenterstudentswillcompletethreedifferentcookie
sheetactivities.Atthecentertherewillbemagneticlettersforstudentstocreatewordsandplace
thelettersinABCformat.ThefirstcookiesheetwillbeforputtingthemagneticlettersintoABC
order.Thesecondcookiesheetwillbeformakingthreeletterwordsbasedonthepicturegiven
onaworksheet.Thethirdcookiesheetwillinvolvestudentsawarenessofblendingatthemiddle
ofawordwiththeABCmagnets,practicingphonicsound.Studentswillalsopractice
pronunciationandtheuseofupperandlowercaseletteringwithallthreeactivities.
Materials:Threeworksheetsandthreecookiepans.Magneticlettersinloweranduppercase
form.Studentswillalsoneedtocopy
downtheactivitiestheycompleted
intoindividualjournalsforextra
practice.

Organization:Ateachcentertherewillbethreestudents.Studentsaretoworktogetheroneach
cookiesheetbeforemovingontothenext.Instructionswillbeprovidedatthecentertolet
studentsknowwhattheyareworkingonandhowtocompletethecenter.Theteacherwillkeep
trackonwhenstudentsfinishsothattheycanthenrotatetothenextcenterwiththeirgroup.The
magnetswillbespreadoutonthetableforeasyaccessandthecookieboardswillhavethe
worksheetplacedinsideofitsothatthemagneticletterscanstick.
StudentScaffoldingandDifferentiation:Studentswillworkcollaborativelysothatifone
studentishavingproblemsinacertainareaanotherstudentmaybestrongerinthatareaandcan
leadthegroup.Studentswillbeabletotalkandlearnfromeachotherduringthisactivity.

wherestudentswillhavetoknowwhateachphotorepresentsandthenfigureouthowitis
spelled.Beforewestarttheliteracycenterstheteachercanaskforvolunteerstonameeachphoto
asanexampletothewholeclass.
2.Anotheracademiclanguagedemandthatmayariseisvocabularythatisunfamiliar.The
teachermustscaffoldbyteachingthestudentspriortothedaywheretheywillbedoingcenters.
Theteachermayalsoscaffoldbycreatinggroupswithhighandlowkidssothattheycanbounce
offofeachotherandsothatstudentswhothinkthevocabularyischallenginghaveamodel.
Abilities/strengths/needs:Thiscenterwouldaddresstheneedsofmultipleabilitiesbecause
studentswouldbeexploringwhatletterslooklikebyhavingtheABCmagnets.Studentswould
alsobepracticingtheirhandwritingskillsbecausetheyhavetorecordwhattheydidatthe
center.Thecenterwouldalsofocusonmultipleabilitiesbecausetherearethreedifferent
activitiesinonecenterandeachactivityfocusesonadifferenttypeofskillsuchasblendingand
anunderstandingofindividualsoundsinthealphabet.Thecenterwouldalsofocusonstrengths
ofanindividualbecausetherewillbethreeactivitieswhichindicatesthatonestudentmaybe
betteratoneactivityovertheotherandtheycanserveasagrouplettertoteachtheotherswho
maybestruggling.Thiscenterwillhelptheneedsofthestudentsbecausetheycanpracticesight
wordsandlookatpatterns.Studentsmayalsoneedextrapracticeonspellingandblending
soundstogethertocompleteaword.Studentsinmyfutureclassroommightalsoneedpractice
theirlearningbycompletinghandsonactivitiessuchastheonesincentersandwork
collaborativelywiththeirclassmates.
Studentaccountabilitysystem:Theteacherwillknowifstudentscompletedtheirworkbecause
studentswillcopydownwhattheyhavedoneatthecenterinajournal.Aftereachcenteris

completedthatdaystudentswillbringtheirjournalsuptotheteacherforastampofapproval.
Theteacherwillalsobewalkingaroundtoeachcentertomonitorprogressandanswerany
questions.Studentswillcompletetheactivitiesineachcenterasagroupsothattheycan
practiceworkingwithothersbuttheymustturninthejournalsindividually.Ifstudentsfinish
earlytheycouldtrytocomeupwithrhymingwordssuchasrugjug,nexttothemakingwords
thattheyshouldhavealreadycopiedintheirjournal.
