Windham Public Schools Visual Art

Mission
Through creative practices, students will have the opportunity to comprehend
and experience what it means to be artistically literate, and how that literacy
can enrich their education and lives
Success and achievement in the arts demands engagement in the four
fundamental creative practices of imagination, investigation, construction, and
reflection in multiple contexts.
Students will develop effective work habits of curiosity, creativity and
innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, communication, and
collaboration, each of which transfer to all aspects of learning and life
in the 21st century.

Visual Arts Standards


Students will:
Learn and use the vocabulary of the arts
Solve problems and think critically using the creative

Make connections between the arts and other disciplines


Demonstrate appropriate behavior for cultural events
Understand the arts in relation to history and culture
Use visual images to communicate meaning, feelings, and
ideas to record life

Learn and use general art vocabulary.
Learn and use vocabulary specific to various media, techniques and processes.

Students will understand art in relation to history and culture.
Understand that the visual arts have a history.
Identify specific artists, their major works, their place and influence.
Identify specific works of art as belonging to particular cultures, styles, times and
places.
Create art work that demonstrates understanding of how history or culture can
influence visual art.
Recognize that art has cultural purpose and significance.
Analyze and interpret artworks in terms of form, cultural and historical context,
purpose and meaning.
Compare works of art to one another in terms of history, aesthetics, genre and
culture.
Recognize historical and cultural influences in own work.
Recognize that symbols express ideas.
Students will use visual images to communicate meaning, feelings and
ideas to record life.
Understand that visual images communicate meaning.
