Information and Communication Technology has become an

integral part of the learning experience for students at Anthony
Paddon Elementary. Students use technology for gathering
information, sharing and presenting ideas and communicating
with one another. As a 21st Century school, we believe that our
role is to support students abilities to participate fully, ethically
and safely as digital citizens, while appreciating its opportunities
and responsibilities.
Technology comes with a variety of risks, costs, and implications.
Immersion in a digital culture and the pervasive use of a wide
array of devices and networks makes it necessary to increase
students awareness so they can safely get the most out of these
experiences. Anthony Paddon Elementarys wireless access has
made every attempt to allow exploration and guided learning
without jeopardizing student safety or privacy. The protections
and firewalls that NLESD has in place also applies to student or
school-owned wireless devices. Our purpose is not to create rules
or limit activity; it is to help foster positive digital citizenship and
the rights and responsibilities that accompany it.

Students are not required to bring their own device. Delivery of

the curriculum will not hinge on a student having access to a
personal device. The focus will be, as always, on the learning
process and prescribed curriculum. Instruction will continue in
ways that accommodate all students resources and interests.
This document outlines the expectations and guidelines for
participation in technology-based experiences in the Anthony
Paddon Elementary community, regardless of when, where or
how this learning occurs. It encompasses the use of school
technology, use of our wireless network, and personally owned
devices when at school.

Definitions
21st Century Learning Learning that focuses on critical/creative
thinking, collaboration, communication, self-direction, global
awareness and cultural literacy.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) The practice of allowing
learners and teachers to bring their own devices and incorporate
them into their teaching and learning.
Device An electronic tool that can be connected to a network
(computer, e-reader, laptop, smart phone, tablet, iPod/mp3 player,
video game system).
Digital Citizenship - The appropriate and responsible use of
technology.
Network A series of devices that can communicate and share
files with one another. Access to the Anthony Paddon
Elementarys computer network is secure and private.
Network Access The opportunity to use a network, contingent
on responsible use.
Smart Phone A cellular telephone that can access networks
using wi-fi or cellular connectivity.
Wi-fi - A network that allows wireless devices to connect to the
internet or private networks.

Safe Use Policy

1. All Anthony Paddon and NLESD policies, particularly our PBS
expectations, related to personal conduct and behaviour must be
followed when using digital devices at school.
2. The school is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen
electronic toys or devices.
3. Devices with wireless access are only to be activated when
instructed by a teacher. Wi-fi must be deactivated at the end of
instructional time, unless directed otherwise.
4. Electronic devices must be stored during outside play, when
eating, during assemblies and fieldtrips, unless otherwise
directed.
5. Cellular telephones and Smartphones brought to school by
students must remain turned off unless used for educational or
other purposes under the direction of a teacher.
6. Cameras and other recording capabilities on any device are to
be used only under the direction of a teacher with the prior
consent of all parties involved.
7. No inappropriate content may be stored or accessed on schoolowned devices (i.e. Apps, games, websites, pictures/video). The
same applies to student owned devices while at school.
8. Anthony Paddon Elementary reserves the right to limit or
terminate privileges associated with technology if policies are
violated.
9. Students may only use the Internet under the supervision of a
teacher.

10. Students may only download and/or install Apps, files or other
programs in consultation with a teacher.

Digital Citizenship Policy Agreement

The first step in the process of helping our students become
Digital Citizens is to review this document and accept the
privileges and responsibilities that come with it. In particular,
please discuss the following Best Practices and Responsibilities
Best Practices
-Respect the privacy of others.
-Use of technology is a privilege.
-Learners must not access files or material for which they do not
have permission.
-Treat all technology with respect.
-Recognize when you or a classmate have accessed
inappropriate content, you must notify a teacher immediately.
-Show respect through words and actions when collaborating with
others.
-Do not share any private information about yourself or others.
-Students may choose to use their own device when working with
others.
-If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, inform an adult immediately.

-Keep virus protection up-to-date.

-Devices must be fully charged at home.
-Families should decide upon terms and conditions of sharing and
caring for personal devices.
-Printing from wireless devices is not presently possible in school
