Summary & Response: Sext Up Kids (Social Media)
Social media has been the most abused system of
communication within a hyper-sexualized society. Whether it is on the
Internet or over the phone, it is the greatest access young kids have.
They can connect from anywhere, and are able to contact others just
through social media alone. The documentary, Sext Up Kids, has
diffused the idea that children are growing up to quickly, and are highly
exposed to sexual factors at such a young age. The evidence enticed
are adequate enough to explain why girls do what they do, and are
likely to do, at their age. Social media has played a huge factor on
young girls behavior, and potentially manipulates them with their
actions.
As it has been a foundation for social interaction for the past
couple years, it has implied that now it is an issue within physical
interactions. Now the challenge is more how to get kids to think
critically about something very much part of their world, very much
bound up within their sense of community, and even within their sense
of their bodies, their friendships, and their relations in their world so
there isnt that distance anymore between that media event and the

relationship of that media event. (15:25-16:01). It is evident that girls
have lost their sense of morals for their actions, instead it is likely that
they do these things because they get caught up in the action itself
and, since everyone else is doing it. As girls are exposed to have
unlimited access to articles, television, and social networks, it is noted
that they spend most their time reading about things they feel
obligated to do. In the sense, they believe that if it is there in front of
them, it must be true. It can be linked to expectancies. The message,
when girl meets boy, its all about the boy Well it says, Decode his
sex style its about her finding out to please him, other than him
trying to please her Its all about him apparently. Cosmopolitan is
bought by the tweens market But a girls gotta do. So a girls
gotta do? (17:51-18:30). This initiates girls to do, what they have
been taught to do. The more girls perform for the boys, the less
they think about themselves. As to a girl who sees actions such as
these, it is extremely likely of them to mimic what they are watching
and ultimately learning this obligation. (19:30-35).
Compared to the mainstream culture, the girls are learning to
act sexy, and look sexy. This is prompting boys to want girls to do
this. This phenomenon is redundant on behalf of the boys. If the boys
arent necessarily asking for this, and dont seem to want it, unless the
girl gives him that option, then it is likely for this scenario to stop the
domino affect. The girl maybe exposed to the ideas of looking sexy,

and doing things a boy might want her to do, but could she has been
prompted to expose herself to these kinds of things? If the boy does
not specifically ask, why should a girl assume and feel these are
obligations. What is in the media was not put there without reasoning,
they were asked to do it.
Social media within the young and teen world has exposed them
to articles meant for the older crowd. Coming from the Internet, the
television, the radio, the news, etc. exposure is evident. Social media is
the greatest sensory that children have access to. It is only up to the
child or teen to follow the media and its portrayals.
