‘Take Home Midterm Exam
1. Briefly define multicultural education and summarize the importance of studying
multicultural foundations. Provide examples of how you would incorporate it into
your future work situation (teaching/human services).
According to my understanding, Multicultural Education is the way teachers or
individuals try to accommodate every student with different backgrounds in order to
achieve student leaming in a specific setting. The importance of studying the
foundations of multicultural foundations is the need to cater to ever student so that
each and every one of them can have equal education-&nd equal opportunity for high
quality education, Several examples of how I fliclaiuss my knowledge of
multicultural foundations into my future career are small activities that allows
students to know one another and respect their differences. Also, another example
would be taking into consideration the different cultural background that each of my
students have by urging them to speak freely and addressing culture issues that may
arise.
2. Identify the essential goals of multiculturalism education. Which do you align
with? Why?
From my understanding, the essential goals of Multicultural Education is to allow all
students from different backgrounds to have equa/opportunities for education and to
eliminate biases that may arise (Domnwachukyu 59). I agree with both goals but I
Jean more towards allowing student to have equal education in terms of quantity and
quality despite the cultural differences. To me, it is really important that a student'sRUNNING HEAD: MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION MIDTERM EXAM
background or any stereotype assumptions should not hinder a child’s right to having
high quality education,
3. Define cultural values and explain cultural values adjustment with a brief
description of your own cultural values.
According to the book, cultural values are morals or ethics that are taken in based on
the way the child was born or raised, So basically a student's values that are created
upon their specific culture are called culttral values (Domnwachukwu 46). As for
cultural values adjustment, it is when individuals adjust or change their culture values
to kind of accommodate the new culture that they are exposed to (Domnwachukwu
47), For example, one of the cultural values that I have is to respect elders in which 1
never address elders by their first name, However, with American culture they do not
consider it to be much value so I have to alter or adjust my cultural value and address
an instruetor by their first name.
4, Explain the implication of cultural values adjustment and maladjustment for
multicultural education,
The outcome of culture values adjustment is that the individual is able to adjust to
different cultures allowing them to respect it and expand their world views. In
contrast, maladjustment is when the individual j¢ unable or refuses to adjust to
different culture which is hinders them from fespecting others and limits their world
views. Cultural values adjustment allows the individual to be more respectful in a
classroom setting than culture value maladjustment (Domnwachukwu, 46-49).RUNNING HEAD: MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION MIDTERM EXAM
5. Name and provide a brief explanation of the four landmark legal ruling on which
the struggle for equal opportunities is anchored in the U.S. Then seleet the one
you believe is the most important and why.
‘The first landmark was Plessy v. Fergusson which was about people given equal
opportunity to enter any place, but they were segregated by skin color. The quote
“Separate but equal” plays into this landmark (Domfwachukwu 70-71). The second
landmark was Brown v, Education of Topekywhich was about student having equal
opportunities in education, This case was brought up because a girl could not attend a
school nearby due to her skin color (Domnwachukwu 71-72). The third landmark was
San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez. This ease was concerning the
unfaimess of the distribution of taxes amongst schools. It emphasized that the
government or state are not allowed to dictate the distribution of taxes among schools
(Domnwachukwu 73). Lastly, the fourth landmark was Lau v. Nichols. This ease
brought up the concer of equal opportunities in regards to education for ESL
students. It mentioned that leaming the language was seen as a right and that all
student should have equal opportunities for it (Domnwachukwu 74). For me, I believe
that Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was very important because it was the
first case in which the minority won over the majority. Also, it emphasized the equal
opportunity for education for all students despite their skin color. I would say that due
to the win of the case, others started to believe that majority will not always win and
that the minority has a chance to change the views on segregation at that time.RUNNING HEAD: MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION MIDTERM EXAM
6. The struggle for equal educational opportunity continues; which area do you think
needs the most attention and why?
I think the area in which it needs most attention is the equal opportunity for ESL.
students. I just learned today from an instructor that the college lacks resources and
opportunities for international students who come and are struggling in English. The
students are not neglected, but they have less cpp compared to ones who are
fluent or proficient in the language.
7. Explain how the civil rights movement influence the development of multicultural
education while describing what you think (person/action) was the biggest
influence.
‘The second significant landmark that pushed for equal opportunities in education was
part of the Civil Rights movement in which it was a big case. Along with that, several
people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. was making a statement about
equality between the colored and white, From those, protests and events that pushed
for equality grew until finally the president of that time signed into law forbidding
discrimination based on race, religion, culture, and origins. I would was that the
second significant landmark, Brown v, Board of Education of Topeka, was the
biggest influence because it was kind of the start of the Civil Rights Act and it created
a domino effect (Domnwachukwu 87-88).RUNNING HEAI MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION MIDTERM EXAM
8. Briefly describe which piece of legislation that you think most impacted
ism education movement in the US.
development of multicultur
The piece of legislation that I think most impacted the development of
multiculturalism education is the Act of 1974, Equal Education Act. It was an act that
became a legal right in which it stated that everyone cannot be denied their education
based on their race and origins ee 91-92). It impacted education
because students were given the right for equal education. Although it was not
strongly executed, it was a start
9. Explain the purpose and importance of the Title I Categorical fund and why it
should never go unfunded.
According to the text, the purpose of the Title I fund is “to ensure that all children
have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and
reach, at a minimum, proficiency on el vines State academic achievement
standards and state academic assessments” (Domnwachukwu 99-100). The reason for
the Title I fund should never go unfunded is because the funds goes to those
individual students who need extra resources and more time to accommodate their
special needs. If the Title I fund was to cease, the resources that are needs to help the
students are not available and they will not have high quality education compared to
the people who do not have special needs.RUNNING HEAD: MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION MIDTERM EXAM
10. Describe the strength & weaknesses of the English-Only movement as they
pertain to the CNMI.
The strength of the English Only movement is the fact that all students will become
familiar to English at an early age and the learning process is easier. Also, since
English is somewhat the main language spoken, it will be easier for the students to
communicate. In contrast, the weakness of itis the fact that students lose their
knowledge of their own language. They pretty much lose - their culture, In the
English Only movement, English will dominate the individual's other language.RUNNING HEAD: MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION MIDTERM EXAM
