ENG 7704 Design of Steel Structures

Assignment 3

Note: You must indicate all the code clauses and Steel Handbook References at all the appropriate
places. You must also use the proper units at all times. All the details must be included through
neat sketches showing details of dimensions, spacing, failure paths (if any), etc.

Q1. Find the capacity of a 4m long compressive member consisting of 2L102x102x9.5 arranged
as shown with a half inch gap in both directions. There are three intermediate connectors
with snug tight bolts. Note that this member may be subject to overall torsional buckling.
The values of Cw and J for the combined section can be taken conservatively as the sum of
the values for the individual sections. The shear center for the combined section is at the
middle of the builtup section.

Q2. Find the axial compression capacity of member AB (W310x118). Find also the effective
length factor of CD (W310x74). Each bay of the frame is 8m wide. Each story is 4.5m
high. All the beams are W310x143. The column webs are parallel to the plane of the paper.
All beam to column joints are rigid in the plane of the paper and hinged in the plane
perpendicular to the paper. (This means that the actual effective length factor for the plane
of the frame must be computed using Appendix G whereas the factor will be as per
Appendix F for the other direction).

Q3. Design a channel-shape compression member to carry 350 kN factored compressive load.
The member has an effective length of 3m in one direction and 5m in the perpendicular
direction.
Q4. Compute the compression capacity of a 4000 mm long angle L152x102x7.9. Use 350W
steel. Note that the section may or may not pass the local buckling check.
