Paragraphs and essays have a main idea that is the most important idea about a topic.
Paragraphs and essays have supporting details that give more information about the main
idea.

Vocab Strategy: Compound Words

A compound word is made up of two shorter words.


Good readers think of the meanings of each of the smaller words to figure out the
meaning of the whole word.
Examples:
downhill = down the hill
armchair = a chair with two arms
racehorse = a horse used for racing
wheelchair = a chair with wheels

Grammar: Abbreviations

abbreviations for proper nouns begin with a capital letter and end with a period (Rd., Dr.,
Mr., Mrs., Ms., Mon., Wed., Jan., Feb.)
abbreviations for measurements have all lowercase letters and end with a period (in., ft.,
yd., mi., qt.) **plural measurements do NOT end with an s**
abbreviations for states have two capital letters and no periods (NJ, PA)
