Students will demonstrate the ability to weave.
Students will understand the necessary function for the survival of tortoises.
Students will compare and contrast art with reptiles.

Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson
Before: Watch an informational video on tortoises on Youtube, Animal Facts Tortoise.
During: Make sure students understand the technique of weaving.
After: Have students display their tortoises throughout the classroom.
4. Lesson Structure and Procedures Sequence of events of the lesson elements.

Conclusion)
1. Show students the video from Youtube.
2. Gather your materials. You will need 2 different colors of paper, scissors, a hole punch and some tape.
3. Start by folding one sheet of paper in half, and cutting a half circle. Then cut strips into the circle, not
going all the way through.
4. Cut your 2nd paper into strips. Leave some paper for the feet and eyes.
5. Weave the strips through.
6. Trim and tape the ends down.
7. Cut out a head and punch two holes for eyes. Cut a square of the contrasting color. Tape behind the
head so the eyes are the contrasting color.
8. Cut out 4 small feet from the 2nd paper and tape them and the head to the body.
9. Display the tortoises in the classroom.

Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives (goals) and meet their needs
1. Have a class discussion with the students about the importance about tortoise shells. Then have a
class discussion about explaining weaving.
2. Have students work independently while the teacher walks around to insure of students
understanding.
3. Have students share their, weaved tortoises with their classmates.

Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives (goals)
Students will understand the basic skill of weaving.

Brown and Green construction paper
Hole punch
Scissors
Tape

Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student
learning
Smart board to show the Youtube video.

To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.

Students who need extra time can take their projects home to finish.
Students who have difficulties can get help from other children in the classroom or teacher.
Students who are gifted can make a different colored tortoise.
10. Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to help
keep students on task and actively engaged
Students will work in their desk. Ask other students for help if needed.
Students will follow the classroom rules.
Teacher will walk around to ensure the students are on task.
Students will share their projects when finished.

Activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the learning
objectives (goals) by applying their new knowledge in a different way
Have students make a square construction paper quilt of whatever colors they please.

interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit)
Have a class discussion about the importance of tortoises shells.
