N-G-PI-305: Hot Tap & Stopples Procedure Hot Tap Fitting Selection Chart

Engineering review or mechanical calculations are not required if a weldment can be selected from the following chart, the
maximum pressure of the line is below the value calculated per the following, and the wall thickness at the Hot Tap location does
NOT meet the criteria noted in Section 4.1.3 of N-G-PI-305. If a selection is not made from this chart, a pressure vessel engineer
who will ensure compliance with all safety and code requirements and recommend testing procedures will design the weldment.
The BASF Representative for the Hot Tap shall consult with Operations and verify that the operating pressure in the pipeline
while the welding of the branch connection is in progress will not stress the pipe more than 35% of the specified minimum
yield strength (SMYS) based on the actual wall thickness obtained by UT. The following maximum allowable pressure shall
be calculated for every hot tap or whenever welding or burning of external attachments on in-service piping is required:

P = 2 x tadj x .35 x SMYS x Ej

Do
where:

P=

Maximum Allowable Pressure based on 0.35 SMYS

tadj=

(The average of UT readings ) - 1/8"

SMYS = Specified Minimum Yield Strength - from ANSI/ASME B31.3, Table No. A-1.
Ej =

Joint Quality Factor - from ANSI/ASME B31.3, Table No. A-1B. (For Seamless Pipe, Ej = 1.0)

SYMBOLS :
WTP-

Integrally reinforced fitting (weldolet).

Full encirclement split tee.
Reinforcement pad is required. Pad width shall equal half of branch nominal size, and thickness shall be no less than the header pipe wall thickness. A Full
Encirclement Split Tee can be used in these applications.

NOTES:
1.
2.

For branch diameters greater than 2", reinforcement is required - either re-pad or split tee as shown in Table 1. 1/8" NPT tapped holes shall be provided in
pad or tee and shall be sealed with RTV sealer. A hydrotest/pneumatic test of the pad or split tee is not required.
All branch fittings must meet or exceed main pipe schedule.
