To Kill A Mockingbird
Shoes Project
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view [] until you climb into his
skin and walk around in it. Atticus Finch
Weve thoroughly discussed Atticuss words of advice to Scout; recall that he made clear the importance of
empathy and putting yourself in someone elses position before judging or speaking about them. Now, you will
have the opportunity to practice this idea by (figuratively) taking a walk in someone elses shoes in a creative
assignment.

Process
1) Examine the pair of shoes you receive and brainstorm ideas about the person who may have worn them
and the life they could have led.
2) Use the worksheet (Walking in Someone Elses Shoes Worksheet) in preparation for your writing.

3) Once you have a lengthy list of specific, yet significant details, begin to narrow down your information
and focus your thinking so that you have an idea of what a single day, moment, or hour of this persons
life may look like.
4) Ultimately, your creative piece should emphasize this single element (perhaps a conflict, experience, or
relationship, for example) and show how the main character deals with it. Include interesting
personality traits and lifestyle aspects of your character.
