Subject:

Writing to Define and Describe

This memo presents the technical definition and description of a Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor. This
memorandum will attempt to answer the distinct characteristics of a Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor by
using the New Holland TV145 Tractor as the main example. Through the use of the TV145, readers
should have a broader knowledge of specs and capabilities of a Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor. All
knowledge obtained should help the farmer address the issue of whether or not their operation could
befit from owning a Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor.
Audience
The technical definition and description is intended for Dairy Farmers within the Magic Valley or Twin
Falls, ID area. The audience all have large scale operations and are looking into buying brand-new
equipment to increase overall efficiency of operations. Plus all operations currently produce at least 35%
of all alfalfa directly feed in operation that is personally owned.
Purpose
In spite of the Farmers being well aware of what a tractor is and what duties it can perform on a regular
daily basis, a vast majority of farmers are not aware of the distinctions of a Versatile Bi-Directional
Tractor that make them unique to a Standard Tractor. This understanding will help explain concepts plus
provide physical specs on the New Holland TV145 Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor.
Placement
Technical definition and description would be display within a Premier Equipment Auction Online
Preview for up and coming brand-new farming equipment auction held in Mountain Home, ID on March
14th 2015.
Choice of Visuals
Visuals have been chosen carefully to help aid the readers better understand the major different
characteristics/components of a Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor. The visuals will also display how the
tractor is versatile and control console is one unit that swivels. In addition, visually represent physical
features of the New Holland Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor.

Technical Definition
The New Holland TV145 Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor is your do it all tractor. It is fully operational in
two directions, operating both in forward and reverse by a swivel console control seat. This
arrangement allows for simultaneous attachments, similar to a backhoe. In addition, the articulated
steering allows for exceptionally tighter
turning.
Principles used in Versatile Bi-Directional
Tractor
Versatile- means tractor is able to
adapt to many different functions
or operations displayed in Figure
1.
Bi-Directional- means the tractor
can perform the same task of
operation in both directions.

means all basic operating tractor
controls move with the console attached to the seat when operation of direction changes.
Articulated Steering- means the center of tractor pivots allowing for both front and back sets of
tires to operate as if separate shown in Figure 2.
Purposes for Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor
The New Holland TV145 Versatile BiDirectional Tractor has the capability to be
used in many different facets. The New
Holland TV145 can be used in: harvesting,
loading and un-loading of materials or
equipment, pulling of equipment, removing of
materials, and compacting of materials.

Production, Logging, Construction, Shipping/Warehouse, Mining, Recycling, and Road Maintenance
(Snow Removal).

Technical Description
The New Holland TV145 Versatile Bi-Directional Tractor is a Turbocharged Diesel 6-cylinder, 4WD
hydraulically driven machine. It has plenty of hydraulic power to operate multiple different attachments
including: Swather-head, Bucket, Forks, Snow Blower, Post Pounder, and Bucket Claw. Plus, it has
enough PTO power and Drawbar strength to operate standard equipment like: Pull-behind Swather,
Mower Deck, Spray Unit, Hay Wagon, Harrow, Plow, Seeder, and etc.
Engine
The New Holland-manufactured 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine displaces 456 ci (cubic
inches) [7.5 L] of force resulting in 145 hp [108.1 kWh] at a rated RPM of 2200. The PTO Power (max) is
rated at 111.8 hp [83.4 kWh] along with a Drawbar of 81.3 hp [60.6 kW], allowing 11,010 lbs of pulling
force.
Power Take-Off (PTO)
The New Holland TV145 has both a rear and front PTO RPM rating of 540/1000. The 540 RPM
ratio is typically meant for smaller implements where the ratio must be adjusted by gearing up or down.
Often results in running higher RPMs than stated. Now, when the PTO shaft is turning 1000 RPMs there
it less gearing up which results in less stress on internal gear reduction and better use for larger
implements because less horse power is lost from the engine to final drive.
Mechanical
The New Holland TV145 is built on a 4X4 articulated 4WD chassis to allow maximum
maneuverability. With an extensive closed center load sensing, 30 gpm [113.6 Ipm] hydraulic pump on
board, steering is hydrostatic powered and braking system relays on hydraulic wet discs like shown in
Figure 3. Then
transmission is also
powered hydrostatically
meaning no clutching is
involved. Simply can
select between the 3ranges of traveling
infinite in forward and
reverse. In addition,
provides easy access to
the hydraulic terminals
for quick hook ups of

attachments displayed in Figure 4.

Capacity
The New Holland TV145 has a fuel capacity of 55 gal [208.2 L], a hydraulic system of 10.5 gal
[39.7 L], engine oil of 18 qts [17.0 L] and coolant of 29 qts [27.4 L].
Dimensions
The New Holland TV145 has an operating weight of 4,715 lbs [6674 kg], wheelbase of 118 inches
[299 cm], overall length (without any attachments) of 77.4 inches [196 cm] and a height of 122 inches
[309 cm].

Self-Evaluation
When I first started this project, I thought the largest struggle would come from the Technical
Definition side since I chose a more physical object. However, shortly into the assignment, I soon
realized that because of my audience, the descriptions would become more difficult. Since I knew that
my audience of Farmers tend to only read specs for equipment, trying to expand out the descriptions
was a much larger task than intended. I understand that many of my peers struggled with selection of a
specific audience and setting, but it seemed as if I had gone too extensive in the placement of this
overview of this product and term, really hindering the ease of doing this project. In addition, learned
along the way that the formatting associated with the captions of pictures doesnt always play nice with
the surrounding text. Overall, wished I thought more thoroughly in the context of how my audience
tends to view products.
