Kindergarten Writing

W.K.3 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a


single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the
order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.
By the end of the lesson, SWBAT: create their own story though drawing,
dictating and writing.

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:


Slant Boards, and other writing tools that enable students who have fine
motor difficulties to succeed.
Dictation assistance will be given to the student in the form of support staff
in applicable, or via the teacher if not applicable

Rationale:

Whether dictating, drawing or writing, students must be able to articulate


their ideas in a way that is purposeful and appropriate to the audience.

Materials:

The book, The Monster Trap by Dean Morrissey


Lined Writing Paper (1 per student)
Large Construction Paper in a variety of colors (1 per student)
Crayons or Markers
Pencils

The teacher will begin the lesson by showing the students the cover of the
book, and having them guess what the story could be about.
The teacher will then read the story, frequently asking the questions; What
do you think will happen next? Do you think that this trap will work?
After asking the questions, the teacher will give the students time to discuss
the questions both as a group and through smaller student on student
interactions.
