Assignment 4
7.1.9a - Problem
Volunteers who had a smoking history classified as heavy, moderate, and nonsmoker were accepted
until nine men were in each category. Three men in each category were randomly assigned to each of
three stress tests: bicycle ergometer, treadmill, and step tests. The time until maximum oxygen uptake
was recorded in minutes. The data are as follows:

Solution
This problem requires a 2-way ANOVA test, as we are testing the effects of two factors smoking
history and type of stress test on time until maximum oxygen intake. We will test at the 5%
significance level.

From our results from the ANOVA table we can conclude:

There is a significant effect of smoking history on oxygen intake (P=0.002212); it appears oxygen intake
decreases with smoking.
There is a significant effect of type of stress test on oxygen intake (P=0.000184); it appears oxygen
intake is highest for step test and lowest for bicycle test.
There is no statistically significant interaction (P=0.81271).
