Course Description: This course prepares students to read, write, listen and speak at the
intermediate-low ESOL level so that they can participate successfully in college. This course will
work on reading and writing skills in academic contexts, focusing mostly on writing complete
sentences with few errors and basic paragraph development.
Method of Instruction: This class will be held in a combination of lecture, discussion,
independent work, pair work, and group work.
Attendance:
When you register for this class, you should plan to attend every night for the whole class
time.
To drop a class, a student must do so officially with the Admissions Office.
Please email or talk to me if you have to miss class. If you have an emergency, you
are responsible for contacting me or a classmate to learn what you missed.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

At the end of this course, with your consistent attendance and hard work, you should be able to
do the following in writing:
1. Main Idea Sentence: Write a topic sentence that directly relates to the writing prompt.
2. Support: Write at least 9 supporting sentences in a paragraph.
3. Organization: The supporting sentences are directly related to the topic sentence and the
supporting sentences are organized logically.
4. Grammar: The writer has control over subjects and verbs and simple sentences. The
student tries to write compound sentences.
*ESOL 19 prepares you in college-level, academic English, so you already need to be able to
read and write at a beginning to intermediate/advanced level in English. If this class seems too
difficult for you, please speak with me immediately. Continuing ESOL Education and Adult
School classes may be better for you at this time. We have Continuing ESOL Education located
on this Miramar campus.

Cheating/Plagiarism:
Students are expected to be honest and ethical at all times in the pursuit of academic goals.
Students who are found to be in violation of Administrative Procedure 3100.3 Honest
Academic Conduct, will receive a grade of zero on the assignment, quiz, or exam in
question and may be referred for disciplinary action. (Administrative Procedure 3100.2
Student Disciplinary Procedures)
You must do your own work for this class; you may not download and submit work from the
Internet or from other people. Do not copy from others.
It is also considering cheating to allow someone to copy from your work. In this
course, cheating, plagiarism, fraud, and/or lying will result in a grade of F for the
assignment with no make-up permitted. You risk immediate dismissal from this class
as well as formal disciplinary action by the Dean of Student Affairs.
Tutoring:
If you need extra help, it is important that you go to the right place for help.
o Is it okay to ask a friend or family member to help you with a writing assignment?
o Is it okay to ask a friend or family member to correct all the grammar errors in
your
writing assignment?
o Is it okay to copy something from the Internet and put your name on it?
The answer to all of these questions is NO. The reason you should not get help from friends
or family members is that they will often do or fix the assignment for you, but you do not
learn how to complete and fix writing assignments by yourself. The goal of the class and
tutoring services
at Miramar is for you to correct your own errors and express yourself in English so that
you improve.
So, what should you do to get extra help?
1. The Instructor: You can come visit me during office hours (see above) or make an
appointment with me.
rd
2. The English Center (I-130): Visit the English Center in I-130, which will open the 3
week of classes (9/13/2015). In the English Center tutors and professors can help you
with your writing or other assignments. The English Center has computers with
Internet access.
3. The PLACe (L-101): You can make an appointment with a tutor who can help you
with your assignments. (619.388.7852) The PLACe is open M-Th 8:30-6:30.
Students with Disabilities:
Students with disabilities who may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to notify
the instructor and contact Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) within the first
two weeks of the semester so that reasonable accommodations may be made as soon as
possible. DSPS is located on campus at K-204.

Student Responsibilities:
1. Have good attendance. Coming to class is very important for you to learn and be successful
in this course.
2. Come to class on time. If you leave early or come late (more than 15 minutes) three times, it
will count as one absence. If you miss more than half of class, it counts as an absence.
3. Come to class ready to work and willing to participate. I will determine your attendance and
participation grade (100 points) partly based on the following:

Attendance & Promptness (coming to class and arriving on time)

Full participation in class activities and group work (e.g. listening while others are
speaking, giving answers, asking questions)

Preparation (e.g. coming to class ready to learn, bringing textbooks)

Disruptive Behavior (e.g. using cell phone, leaving class many times or without
permission, talking during tests, using native language)

4. Turn in your homework at the beginning of class on the due date. I will allow you to turn in
2 late assignments. After, no other late work will be accepted.
5. Ask another classmate if you miss class to find out what you missed in class. I encourage
you to exchange contact information (phone numbers/email addresses) with your classmates.
You can also email me if you have questions.
6. Take each quiz on time. I will not allow you to make up any quiz. However, I will drop
your two lowest or missing quiz grades. Each quiz has a time limit and you must turn in the
quiz at the end of the quiz time.
7. Do not miss the midterm and final exams. There will be no make-ups.
8. Ask questions when you do not understand something.
9. Be respectful of your classmates. All of you come from different countries and cultures,
but you are all here for the same goal.
10. Do not use your cell phone (or any electronic device) during class unless I allow you to do
so. Do not leave class to make or answer a call because it is disruptive. If you are expecting
an urgent call, please let me know before class and be as quiet as possible when talking on
the phone.

I have read the student responsibilities and I agree to follow them for this semester.
