IndianaUniversitybeganin1824withtheenrollmentoftenyoungmen.Thiswas
thebeginningofagreatschoolrisingtothetop.Theyhadtheirfirstgraduatingclassin
1830andbeganbuildingthefirstcollegebuildingintheSeminarySquare.In1836,the
firstcollegebuildingwascompletedwhichmeantthatitcouldholdalargeramountof
students.Sadly,in1854thefirstbuildingwasdestroyedbyafireleavingtheattending
studentsdevastated.Theybeganbuildingthesecondbuildingin1855andfinishedit
neartheendoftheyear.In1867,IUbecameoneofthefirststateuniversitiestoadmit
women,andSarahParkwasthefirstwomantograduatethere.In1874,theScience
Hallwascompleted,butwasdestroyedbyafirein1883.Afterthatbuildingwas
destroyed,thecitizensofMonroeCountypledged$50,000totheuniversity.Thatgot
thecollegegoingagainandtheywereabletohavetheirfirstmalebasketballteamin
1898.ThisistheyearinwhichIUbeganitslegacyinathletics,andtheywentontowin
theirfirstNCAAChampionshipin1953,thenanotherin1981.In1903,theSchoolof
Medicinewasestablishedfollowedbythegraduateschoolin1904.In1990,IUreceived
a$30milliongrantfromLilyEndowmentforITinitiative,andreceivedanother$53
millionbythemin2004forlifescienceresearch.Indiana

StateUniversity'smostrecentaccomplishmentwashavingthehonorofbeingrankedin
thetop50collegesinKiplinger'sPersonalFinanceforthefirsttime.IUisapretty
interestinguniversitythathasmanyopportunitieslikeCampusinsurance,avarietyof
degrees,andmanysocialactivitiestokeepyouentertainedinbetweenclasses.
IndianaStateUniversityisapublicschoolwithnoparticularreligiousaffiliations.
ItislocatedinBloomingtonIndianaandsitson1,926acresofland.Thisallowsthemto
housealittleover30,000studentseachsemester,andstillhaveplentyofrooms.IUisa
coedschoolthathasaverygoodstudenttoteacherratioof10:1.Thatmeansthata
studentcanactuallygetindividualhelpifneededunlikesomecolleges.Itsannualtuition
is$19,734whichisalittleover$3,000cheaperthanPurdueUniversity.Theroomand
boardfeescostrightaround$9,000andtheathleticfeesare$30perstudent.IUalso
offersaverygoodinsuranceplanthatisautomaticallybuiltintoyourtuitionunlessyou
alreadyhaveanothertypeofinsurance.Withthisinsurance,itis$50pervisittothe
clinicandthereisnothingelsetopay.IUisaveryprodigiousschool,andyoucanget
themostoutofyourmoneybychoosingtofurtheryoureducationthere.
IwouldliketogotoIUtogetaminorinbiologyandpossiblyaminororamajor
inanatomy.AfterthatIwouldliketoreceivemydoctoratesdegreesomewhereinthe
medicalfield,butIstillhaveplentyoftimetodecidewhere.Ibelievethatthiswouldbe
agreatplacetostartmystudies,andtobeginpreparingformylifelongcareerinthe
medicalfield.TheplacementrateforIUis8.5%andtheschoolhasanaverageofa
3.70GPA.Thisisprettygood,andthatmeansthattheyonlyacceptthosewhothey

believearegoingto

succeedintheirschool,andnotjustwastetheirtimeandmoneyonnothing.IUeven
offersservicestohelpyoufindajob,andaplacetodoyourresidency.Thisisavery
convenientservicebecausesometimesitcanbeamajorhassletryingtolocateaplace
todoyourresidency,andfindingajobthatallowsyoutoshowallofyourabilitiesthat
youareabletodo.
IUhasmanyathleticgamestoattendto,andtheyareallveryexciting.Someof
theseincludefootball,basketball,golf,soccer,bowling,andmanyotherentertaining
sports.Someoftheintramuralsportswouldbefootball,indoorsoccer,andtennis.
Besidessportsactivities,manyofthestudentsparticipateintheGreekLifeprograms
offered.Lastyear,17%ofthestudentsoncampuswereinvolvedinitwhichisabout
5,500people.Thisprogramoffersyouahome,friends,avarietyofsocialactivitiesto
attend,and65differentclubstochoosefrom.Anotherwaytomakemanyfriendson
campusistojointheSocialUnion.Students,faculty,staff,andguestsallattendthis,so
youwilldefinitelymeetalotofnewpeople.Youcanalsokeepyourselfbusyby
choosingfromavarietyofvolunteeringservicesincludingahugeselectionforthe
medicalfield.MostpeoplethatattendIUstayoncampus,sothatmeansthattheyhave
alotofdorms.Eventhoughthereareplenty,youcannotchoosewhichdormyoulivein
unlessyoudecidetolivewithafriendthatisalreadythere.Themaximumamountof
studentsthatcanstayineachdormistwo,butyouareguaranteedthatsamedormfor
4years,butafterthatyoumustrequesttostayinitlongerorrequestanewdorm.You

havetofilloutaformandmailitintorequestaroommate,andyoualsomustdothisto
requestanewdorm.Therearen'tmanythingsthatyoucan'tbring

intothedorm,butsomeofthemainthingsstudentsbringwouldbeDVD's,books,TV,
cleaningsupplies,bedclothes,food,dishesandutensils,andclothes.Thesehavebeen
consideredthethingsyouneedtosurviveincollegebymanystudent.Whilelivingon
campus,itisbestifyousetupabankaccountwithIUsoyoucanusetheirATM's
throughoutthecampus.Ifnot,youwillhavetotravelsomewhereeverytimeyouneed
somecash.Hopefullyyoudon'tchoosetobuyalcoholordrugswithallofyourextra
cashthoughbecausetheyarebothstrictlyprohibited.Havingtheseoncampuscould
possiblygetyoukickedout,withoutgettingyourmoneyback.Ifyouareagoodstudent
though,youwillgettostayandusetheircampusbustogotomanyoftherestaurants
oncampusliketheHoosierCafe,andmanyothersavailabletospendyourmoney.The
mealsarefairlycheapforstudentsandtheyofferprettymuchanythingyoucanthinkof,
evenontheirlatenightmenu.Theyevenstayopenprettymuchallhoursofthenightso
youareabletoeatlateifyoutakesomeofthenightclassesthattheyhaveavailable.
IndianaUniversityisaveryinterestinguniversitythatoffersmanythingssuchas
socialactivities,ahugeselectionofdegrees,andaveryusefulcampusinsurance.Itis
averylargeandsuccessfulschoolthathasliveduptoitsreputationformanyofyears.
Itrankedinthetop50in2010,anditcontinuestoexceednormalstandards
academicallyandathletically.Ithassufferedfrommanyfiresthathavecompletely
destroyedtheirbuildings,butthisuniversitycontinuedtorebuilditselfandmakeitintoa

collegeempire.Itoffersmanyofdifferentactivitiestobecomeinvolvedinyour
community,aswellasgettingsomehandsonexperienceinthefieldyourarewantingto
gointo.Overall,itisoneofthe

bestcollegestogotoforitsprice,anditpushestheirstudentstolearnandachieve
thingsacademicallythattheydidn'teventhinktheycouldwhichiswhyithasachieved
somanythingsasaschool.IUwillcontinuetosucceedformanyyearstocome,and
willalwaysremainastrongandprodigiousschool.
