While researching the social, cultural and economic influences on the changing American
family, it is clear there are many aspects affecting today's children.
Child abuse and neglect have a huge impact of the development of young children.
According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC),
childhood professionals and programs have an important role in preventing child abuse and
neglect. NAEYC believes that early childhood educators have a responsibility to not only report
abuse, but help families prevent it by adopting policies that promote partnerships with families,
promote excellence in early childhood programs, provide supportive services to families,
advocate for children, families and communities, collaborate with other professionals and
understand their legal obligation to report abuse (Where We Stand On Child Abuse Prevention,
2004). As a childhood professional, it important to realize that child abuse and neglect isn't just
about reporting, but more an effort to prevent it by providing families with the support needed to
maintain healthy relationships with their children, community and teachers.
Consequently, with the knowledge of today's social, economical and cultural influences
on American families, early childhood professionals play an important role in providing support
to them. Early childhood professionals must take responsibility and initiative by providing a
wealth of knowledge and guidance to the children and families they relate with.
