A group of 15 teachers were asked these two questions: what is the purpose of assessment?
and what makes a good assessment. There answers were as follows

I dont know if there is a perfect assessment.

When you find what a perfect assessment is, let me know.

Assessments are inherently affected by how much a student enjoys the subject.

To determine what has been learned in order to determine the next step in the learning
process.

A good assessment has multiple modalities; answers are open-ended

The purpose of assessments is to find out what kids are learning and what teachers need to
reteach or teach better.

A good assessment is one that students can also learn from.


The purpose of assessments is to check for student understanding over a short period of
time or long range

To find out where teachers need to go back or fix

To measure how much students have learning

To get feedback on what the students learn in a particular segment

A good assessment is finding many ways to find information on student learning

To evaluate student, to see if they have mastered the skills they have been taught

A good assessment is tied to what they have been taught

To provide quantifiable data that allows for measurement of learning

A good assessment is relevant to what was learned in terms of content and skill

To measure student growth in a particular skill area as well as content knowledge

A good assessment measure critical thought and interaction with course content in a
variety of ways

To measure the progress of students in the class. Also, to allow for adjustments to be made
throughout the year

Good assessments are short and clear

For the teacher to check for understanding and also to show evidence of learning, for the
teacher to make adjustments to their planning and focus.

A good assessment depends on the topic, students, ability and aptitude.

To evaluate learning and understanding of a topic, lesson or unit.

Good assessments evaluate student learning in different ways

Allows students to demonstrate comprehension of content and allows students to go
further with their ideas

To assess how much students have learning and whether than can understand and process
what they have learning

A good assessment requires students to use what they have learned in a meaningful way.
