Jammu and Kashmir Dispute

History
This dispute dates all the way back to dates prior to independence. Both
India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir. It has been disputed
since the British relinquished control of the subcontinent in the 1940s. In
1998, Pakistan began to catch up with India technologically and both
countries began to test their nuclear weapons. In 1948, Tribesmen from
Pakistan invaded Kashmir with support of Pakistani government. Kashmir is
divided into a Pakistani controlled part and an Indian controlled part. In 1965,
India and Pakistan fight a border war along the India-West Pakistan border
and the line of control in Kashmir. In 1972, India and Pakistan signed a peace
accord which both sides agreed to settle their differences by peaceful means
through bilateral negotiations.

Present
The most recent events occurred in 2001-currently. In 2002, a terrorist attack
on families of Indian servicemen occurred and India threatened to retaliate.
Pakistan made implicit threats of nuclear weapons. This area has been
disputed since the British relinquished control of the subcontinent in the
1940s. A militarized 450 mile long Line of Control has pitted Indian and
Pakistani forces against each other in the Himalayan region. It has become
too difficult to compromise and militarily too dangerous. India continues to
assert its sovereignty and rights over the entire region of Kashmir. Pakistan
maintains that it is a disputed territory. Pakistani leadership has indicated
that they would be willing to accept alternatives such as a demilitarized
Kashmir.

Future
It will be hard to settle this dispute. It has been going on for over 60 years
and I think that the only thing that will really help is the pace treaties. There
has still been gunfire over the border and tensions.
