Instant Activity: Dynamic warm-up: Students
will be standing on the sideline facing the
other sideline. When I say go, students will
perform a dynamic activity i.e. jogging, high
knees, side-shuffle, monster walks, lunges,
back-pedal, etc.

1 min.

Set Induction:
Today we will begin the football unit,
specifically learning the basics of
stationary throwing and catching. Who
here knows why throwing a football is
important? Who here thinks they know
how to throw a football?

football, and also in other sports, that are
critical to the end goal (touchdown).

Grouping Strategies:
I will number the
students by 2s. One
person on the line on
homebase and the
partner will stand on
a polyspot 15 feet
away.

Transition

After the dynamic warm-up and when
students have returned to homebase, I
will have them sit quietly and wait for
further instructions.

Football Throwing/Catching: Football

throwing cues: 1) laces, 2) athletic stance,
3) face sideways to target, 4) bring arm
back to ear, 5) extend and follow through.
Football catching cues: 1) Eye on ball, 2)
triangle with thumbs and index finger
together, 3) bring ball into body. Students
will partner up in 2s. One student will
stand on homebase while another
student will stand on a polyspot
approximately 15 feet away. Students on
homebase line will start with the football.
On my signal, students will throw a pass
to his/her partner. Receiver must be
ready to catch. Students will continue to
throw and catch until stop signal.

1) laces, 2) athletic stance, 3) face
sideways to target, 4) bring arm back to
ear, 5) extend and follow through.
What are the cues to catching a football?

Adaptations
Regression: Take one step forward for
each unsuccessful pass/catch.
Progression: Take one step back for each
successful pass/catch.

Transition:
Students will return to their polyspot, sit
quietly, and wait for further instructions.

Lesson Core - Task 2:

the football, the receiver steps forward. If
a student does catch the football, the
receiver steps back.
