structure. As Camden places the forth block on top of his tower he says, "Yah, yah. As he
places the fifth block on top of his tower, the two blocks underneath fall over. He looks down
and says Oh! He looks over at his caregiver with a look of disappointment. She acknowledges
that the block fell and says, "Yep, you can do it." Camden continues to build again.

10:10 AM
Camden tries to add a block to his friends tower. The tower falls over and his
friend whines, "No!" Camden picks up the fallen blocks quickly and tries to fix the tower.
Camden says, "der." His friend tells him, "No it goes there," and puts the block in a different
place. Camden picks up another block and says, "dat one?" His friend says, "No!" Camden
tries again and his friend says, "No!" Camden gets more blocks and places them near his friend
without saying anything. His friends tower falls over by itself and Camden quickly picks up the
fallen blocks and says, "der dat." Camden appears to be helping his friend by giving him a

Subject: Camden 18 months
9:45AM
Camden is standing waiting for the caregiver to blow more bubbles. He is
watching her carefully. As the bubbles fly around, Camden screams joyfully and smiles. He
reaches out to touch the bubbles as they fall to the floor. Camden turns around in circles in a
silly dance like motion. The caregiver blows more bubbles. Camden claps his hands together
and then tries to touch more bubbles. As she continues, Camden screams louder and laughs
while dancing in the bubbles.

10:30 AM
Camden is playing on the playground equipment. He tries to pull himself up onto
a platform. He has a seed from a tree in his hand. He stands up on the platform and drops the
seed. He watches it fall. He continues to climb up the stairs until he reaches the slide. He says,
"sigh." The caregiver says, "Yes, come down the slide." Camden sees the caregiver standing
near the bottom. The caregiver says, "Peek a Boo." Camden smiles and moves from the slide

opening to another opening on the side. He peeks through the railing at the caregiver and smiles.
The caregivers says, "Peek a Boo." The caregiver coaxes Camden to the slide entrance again by
asking him to sit down. Camden says, "sigh" and sits down at the top of the slide. He hesitates
and then stands back up. The caregiver tries again to coax him to come down. After about a
minute, he sits back down and attempts to come down. He finally scoots down the slide. His
face looks worried. When he reaches the bottom he stands up and smiles.

10:40 AM Camden is walking on the woodchips and sees a dog in the distance. He stops and
points his right finger. He says, "dadee." The caregiver says, "Yes, it is a doggie." Camden
turns and runs toward more play equipment. He puts his hand on a stepping stool that is almost
as tall as he is. His caregiver tries to show him a stool he can get up on. Camden tries to climb
up, and manages to get his leg up on top. He pulls himself up and stands up. While standing
Camden smiles and marches in place.

Analysis
It appears that Camden's emotional and social development are right within the time frame for
his age group. According to Erickson, the second stage of psychosocial development is
autonomy. It appears that Camden is fairly independent and able to take risks by building things
on his own and attempting to help others. (Gonzalez-Mena, 2009). Camden showed empathy
when His friends tower falls over by itself and Camden quickly picks up the fallen blocks
and says, "der dat." Camden appears to be helping his friend by giving him a block.
Also, Camden is showing initiative as he seeks assistance from adults. Erickson discusses how
children develop trust through relationships. This is prevalent when: He looks over at his
caregiver with a look of disappointment. She acknowledges that the block fell and says,
"Yep, you can do it."
In addition, Camden is able to interact with peers through his verbal abilities. In all of my
observation, Camden showed Prosocial skills by being able to interact with others in a positive
way. He had a positive self-esteem and trusted his caregiver.
