School Violence
School violence is widely held to have become a serious problem in recent
decades in many countries. It includes violence between school students as well as
physical attacks by students on school staff and it is a subset of youth violence, a broader
public health problem. There are many factors for the occurrence of school violence. The
three most common factors are substance abuse or association with gangs, guns,
depression, and pressure from school, work, home. School laws try to prevent these
factors from endangering the youths in the schools. Many school officials and citizens are
convinced that the growing problems of student disruption and general lack of respect for
authorities are attributable directly to an over emphasis on students rights. The increase
in violence, drugs, and weapons in schools has directed our attention to the need to talk
all reasonable steps to ensure a safe learning environment for students and teachers. I
believe that this is not only a United States problem, but also a global problem that
quickly needs to be resolved

According to the NoBullying.com, school violence has gotten worse over the past
ten years due to a number of factors. The U.S. Department of Education reported in 2012
that nearly 6,300 students were expelled from American schools for carrying firearms in
1997. Of these expulsions, 58% of them were for carrying handguns and 17% were for

shotguns. Nationally, from 2004 through the year 2008, there has been an increase in
juvenile arrests for murder and manslaughter (non-negligent) of 19%. In 2008, in the U.S.
alone, there were 16,270 homicides. One in ten of these were under aged juveniles and
over half of these murders were the results of arguments the youths had previously had
with their victims.
Most of the times cause mental and behavioral plays an important role in
developing the strange behavior. Young students with disorders like bipolar diseases ad
depression find it difficult to see the positive things around them. They can easy get
angry, due to overpowering negative feelings towards life, this develops obsessive
behavior in them even for their personal shortcomings and faults. They usually retaliate
over the things not really matter. They want to end their lives and hurt other live as well.
Moreover, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder tend them to lean towards
rebellious and violent acts. Youth and children through behavioral disorders show
extreme aggression towards members of the school. They do not have any regard for
human rights and others. Attention deficit disorder can lead kids show disruptive
behavior may continue to result in the development of school violence.
Most teenagers today, who have to deal with many social issues, are experiencing
a lot of pressure from school, home or social. This pressure puts a great strain on many
teens. Naturally, some will experience a greater strain that others. If any of those who do
feel the pressure as a significant burden also have a natural tendency to be violent, then
the consequences can be serious. This is especially so when you consider the apparent
ease with which teenagers can access weapons.

As mentioned above, depression breeds hatred and anger in the student may
continue to lead them to develop violent tendencies. Such students at least are interested
in learning and school activities. This is the basic reason why such students fail again and
again. Low self-esteem can also result in depression and increasing dropout rate among
students. Psychologists also believe that the extreme effects of school violence can
develop suicidal thoughts among students to the members of the family should be
involved in the sharing of all the fears of children their children allows them to move in a
better direction.
According to the Teen Violence Statistics article on youth violence stated FBI
in 2011, there were 33,000 violent street, motorcycles, and prison gangs active in the
U.S., with more than 1.4 million members (a 40% increase from 2009) and 86% of US
cities with a population of 100,000 or more report gang activity. Gangs have also played
a large role in school violence. According to Absence of a Family and its Unconditional
Love, Positive Role Models, and Proper Discipline article they stated about gang is a
group of people, usually of the same ethnic group and from the same neighborhood.
Gangs occur in schools for many reasons, but the primary attraction toward gangs are
their ability to respond to student needs that are not currently being met in their lives.
Gangs often provide these dysfunctional youths with a sense of family and acceptance,
thus allowing for them to disregard true family.
Substance abuse is another reason there is violence in the schools. Crime raters
are higher at school alcohol and illegal drugs are easily obtained. Gun violence poses a
serious threat to Americas children and youth. Existing data clearly point to the need for
improved strategies for keeping guns out of the hands of children and youth and those

who would harm them. Gun violence in schools is extremely rare, as are violent crimes
committed by people with mental illness. However, the majority of youth murdered are
killed with a firearm and nearly half of youth suicide deaths involve the use of a gun.
Efforts to end youth gun violence must focus on accessibility and prevention.
While it is easy to speculate about what the main causes of school violence is the
impact of school violence is quite simple to see. One of the most devastating is the
frequency of school shootings across America. Unfortunately, a visible effect is the loss
of lives as a result of school violence. One obvious effect of school violence is many
students finally fear of other students or school. When dealing with school bullies,
teenagers tease each other, and the recent riots; teenagers began to fear what would
happen to them every day. Some parents react swiftly to these types of fears and look into
homeschooling their own children.
The effect of school violence can cause more emotional harm than physical harm
and can lead to serious injury or even death. Have you ever gone to school with the fear,
which is not the fear of not doing homework or coming late but that of being injured?
You can say no but I can say yes because of the significant increase of school violence
nowadays. It has no longer been a national issue but a global problem. In fact, it
happened in any levels of education, from primary to university. When I was in my
country (Vietnam), I see it happened everyday at school. But almost people cant do
nothing because they scared they will do something their back and the law not tight
enough. The highest price they have to pay is out of school for couple days thats all.
Especially serious, the number of people killed has raised recently. The statistic given
recently by Ministry of Education and Training in Vietnam showed that there were about

1600 school violence situations happened in one school year, 5 circumstances each day
on average (Cam n.d.). It rang the alarming bell to government and citizens to address
this problem. Therefore, this research paper, with the aim at reducing violence in schools
and creating friendly and safe educational environment for students.

Adolescent Risk Behaviors by Family Income Level

The chart above shows statistics about youths from low-income familiar are as
likely to use or sell drugs, as are their higher-income counterparts, the former are
significantly more likely to engage in criminal activities that target other people.
I believe that school violence is a global problem. Its time to get the guns,
violence, and drugs out of our school system. Percentage of violence in schools has

increased significantly. Some ways to end school violence are: supporting public policies
against violence broad and comprehensive, assessment and resolution level of violence in
personal relationships you, stand up against bigoted behavior or comments, welcoming
community programs useful, do not carry a gun, do not buy violent games or toys, is a
positive role model to others, and raise awareness of the problem of violence among
peers. On the other hand, they made the school police officers and security guards, metal
detectors and other programs, respect other individuals and how to properly handle their
emotions, characteristics especially anger, and communities can participate in and
contribute to the program that the school was initiated to reduce school violence.

Reflection On Essay
I felt my writing has improved during this semester because of all the different
types of essays that I experimented with. I wrote 2-3 essays and 5-6 reflections in the past
four or five months which were all very challenging. Over the essays I felt I had some
very interesting stories. I feel I always write best when I write about my life, past
experiences or my culture. It seems to me that when I first started to learn to write it was
no fun at all because the small experience I had with writing. I believe that since I have 2
different types of the essay to find out I'm on my way to an easier way there near future.
At first, my topic was why it is important to learn second language I choose this
topic because its similar with me but I was wrong, I didnt listen very carefully because
the topic we pick should be relate with the movie we have watch in class. In the same
way as my This I Believe essay, I also had a difficult time thinking of a topic to write
about for my second essay. First off, I could not even think about what I was going to
write about until almost the last minute. My mind went blank, and I just could not think. I
finally decided to write about school violence. But finally the idea came to my head
more quickly than the other essays. I really enjoyed writing this essay, and I decided to
give directions on the cause and effect and how to prevention school violence. This idea
came to my head because when I was in my country I see this happened everyday at
school and almost people can't do anything. I really want to help people know whats
going, this problem is alarming dangerous and it need to be stop. As I was getting started,
I just sat at my computer and type free hand thinking over very carefully step-by-step.
Then I checked for spelling errors and I think I revised this essay one or two times before
I actually upload the file on e-portfolio. I felt I would get a good grade on this essay
because I try my best on this.

In my research I found a lot of source, information and paper about school

violence. I think it is popular topic now because school violence is a major problem
around the world and the number of violence keep increase every day. One thing is
surprise in my research is the number of school violence in other is very big. First at all, I
know school violence happens everywhere around the world but it not really worst than
my country, but on my research I what found out during the survey when they ask student
about what you gonna do when you see school violence? Their answer make me surprise,
they said: "I see it happens everyday and for me it's "normal" , " I can't do anything and
I wont do anything because it not my problem".
My small critique group was helping me organization the detail and idea for my
essay. For example I wrote the draft essay and bring to class then they read it and help me
go over grammar or additional sentence, word, make the essay more clear. I learn one
thing very interesting over my essay is researching help me a lot on the essay. Because
when I write the essay the information and detail never comes to my head so thats why it
took me a lot of time to write. But now it is easier for me because I can found the best
way to do it. First at all I will choose the topic then go ahead and research my topic while
I researching it will appear a lot of detail and information so you just need to write it
down and organize them. Then write an outline with those information and based on this
outline you can easy write and essay.

School violence is a social problem, thus there is something that all individuals can do to
help put an end to the violence among out youngsters. Schools are doing their parts, and
implementing school police officers and security guards, metal detectors and other
programs. Parents can do their part by teaching their children right from wrong,
respecting other individuals and how to properly handle their emotions, particularly
anger. The community can get involved and make contributions to the programs that
schools are initiating to minimize school violence

which he stated that he found as many gang members he studied came from intact

gang member's home was intact or not, they were more likely to be defined as
unhealthy than healthy. But the lack of a healthy family setting alone is

insufficient as an explanation for the formation of gangs. Feelings of

powerlessness may also contribute to their development.

author of this paper but there is no information about him/her. There is one quote
