UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The picture the Symbols of States lesson is part of a unit identifying the different symbols of different states in
America. Students understanding of the major symbols of each state and the importance of identifying why
they think they choose that symbol described in the TN state social studies standards of government and civics
1.0.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given the different symbols the student will be able to match the correct symbols to the correct state with a
score of four out of five on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: application, comprehension)
Given the completed table with the images, the student will write one to two sentences explaining why they
think each state chose the indicated symbol with 100% accuracy. (Blooms taxonomy: synthesis)

Student Participation
The goal of the lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of the different symbols
representing the different states. Students will provide a visual representation of a table with three
different states with three of their matching symbols.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
State/ District, Common Core Standards
TN Social Studies 1.34 Create a visual representation, such as a graphic organizer, of Tennessee symbols,
including the state tree (Tulip Poplar), flower (Iris), motto (Agriculture and Commerce), animal (raccoon),
nickname (Volunteer State), flag, and one song (Tennessee Waltz, Rocky Top). Write an opinion piece
explaining why you think these are/are not good choices, including supporting detail.
ISTE Standard(s)
3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of
sources and media.

MATERIALS:
1. Symbols of State Sheet
2. Pencil
3. Scissors
4. Glue
5. Computer
6. Microsoft Word
7. Internet Access to:

a. State Symbols Online http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/

Technology Integration:
The students will observe and help the teacher pick out three symbols from the states of Tennessee, California,
and Maine from the above website. They will use Microsoft Word to create a table to glue their symbols on their
sheet. They will have assistance when they use Microsoft Word. After they have created their table, the students
will print their sheet out. A sample of the end product is available at the end of the lesson plan.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will exhibit a clear understanding of three states: TN, CA, and MA and three important symbols of
each state by creating a visual representation of the symbols.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a building block upon previous standards about learning in depth of Tennessee and other states.
We will use the visual representations to refer back to as we continue to learn about Tennessee.
The lesson or technology use will be modified to meet the needs of diverse learners.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction:
I will display a map of the United States on the white board, and on the wall, beside the whiteboard, I will have
50 different pictures.
I will explain how each state has their own individual and unique symbols.
I will then ask some students to match the pictures of the symbols with whichever state they think the symbol
belongs to.
Procedures:
1. Introducing the Lesson- I will turn on the projector and project the website listed above. I will
explain to the students that I have already picked out three states we will be studying. I will tell them
I have picked Tennessee, California, and Maine. (5 minutes)
2. I will go to each state and let the class decide which three symbols we will do for each state. Once
they have picked a symbol, we will go over the little information that is given by each symbol
category. I will then copy and paste each image to a Microsoft Word page and print them out. Once
that is done, I will explain to the students how each of them will make a table to match the pictures
with the right states. I will show them how to make a table using Microsoft Word. (30 minutes)
3. Three students at a time, with assistance, will be directed to a computer to make a table in Microsoft
Word. After they have completed their table, they will print their paper off. (15 minutes)
4. Students will take their table and in the first column write the states name the three different rows.
They will also be given their symbols pictures to cut out and glue to the right place. (30 minutes)
5. Once they are done gluing their pictures, they will then write beside each picture of why they think
that state decided to pick that symbol. (20 minutes)
Closure: Every students will share their thoughts on why they think the state picked the three symbols on their
Symbols of States graphic organizer. After they have shared, the teacher will collect everyones table and check
for accuracy and submission.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
The formative assessment will be checking the graphic organizer of the states and their symbols once the
students have completed the table. The formative assessment of the lesson will be the students
displaying their work to the class and explaining why they chose their reasoning of the symbol.

WHY YOU THINK

THE STATE PICKED
THE SYMBOL
I think Tennessee picked
this symbol because each
star represents one of the
divisions of our state.

I think Tennessee picked

this symbol because it
represents the country
music that Nashville,
Tennessee is known for.

I think Tennessee picked

this symbol because of all
the farming that happens
in West Tennessee.

CALIFORNIA

I think California picked

this symbol because the
color of the flower is
bright, and when I think
of California, I think
about how all of the
people have bright
personalities.

I think California picked

this symbol because it has
the ocean on it
representing the Pacific
Ocean. It also has the
word Eureka on it because
of the Gold Rush that
California is so popular
for in the past.

I think California picked

this symbol because it is
only found in California.

MAINE

I think Maine picked this

symbol because it has a
light house on the quarter
which Maine is known for
having a lot. It also shows
water representing the
Atlantic Ocean.

I think Maine picked this

symbol because it
represents the population
of Moose in the state of
Maine, and it also has the
states motto, I Direct, on
it.

I think Maine picked this

symbol because it
represents the moose
population.
