Lesson Plan Project

Setting - High School Theory Class
Objectives At the end of the lesson the student will have a better understanding of part-writing, including
7th chords, chord progressions, and how these progressions sound by composing their own four
bar melody, through www.noteflight.com, based off of a figured bass that I will give them in
class.
Procedures/Activities1. I shall instruct the students in the lab how to navigate to noteflight as well as teach them
simple instructions on how to use the piano instrumentation in noteflight to the degree required.
2. I will then present a figured base, either written on a whiteboard or on a projector, which the
students will then copy into noteflight.
3. I will then instruct the students to part-write a four-part harmony for the figured bass using the
techniques and rules of part-writing discussed in class, without non-chord tones, as well as write,
on a sheet of blank paper, the chord progressions and a second-level analysis.
4. Students will wrap up about five minutes before class and each play their compositions using
the noteflight playback for the class.

5. At the end of the class time the students will take a screenshot of their composition which they
will then dropbox into my account in either a jpeg or png type format and turn their sheet of
paper in to me.
Assignment1. The students will part-write a four-part harmony from a figured bass using proper part-writing
techniques
2. The student will write the chord progression of the figured bass and a second-level analysis on
a separate sheet of paper.
3. The student will play the playback of their composition in class
3. The student will dropbox a screenshot of the assignment to me in either .jpeg or .png format
and hand in the analysis paper to me.
Help ResourcesThe students may consult either me or their textbook for assistance in the part-writing, but not
each other.
Assignment DueThe assignment will be due at the end of the class in which it was assigned.
